Road to Rome review
[20:09:16 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Before it even hits the shelves, EuroGamer has posted a review of DICE's expack to BF:1942, Road to Rome, where it scores a 60%. So we have a curious problem here. The content is actually really very good; the new models are great, the new forces have, er... pretty uniforms and funny accents, most of the six (six!) maps are excellent, and of course there are the bayonets - cool. The single player game, with the addition of the extra missions, feels a little fuller than before, but is it worth the money for an expansion that doesn’t particularly, well, expand?Ouch. But still, for 20 bucks, I guess ya really can't go wrong.. |

Vietcong trailer

The official Vietcong website is hosting a trailer which shows off some of the environments to be found in the game. There are 2 flavors to choose from, either MPG (11 MB) or DivX (36 MB), which is in a higher screen size. By the way, this is the same trailer I posted here first, way back in August! |

Vietcong preview
[21:45:34 EST] by
~~
Rushian
CVG has posted a preview of Illusion Softworks' upcoming not-too-tactical jungle shooter, Vietcong. Here's a snip: The typical mission has you trawling through the dense jungle, guided by a South Vietnamese soldier (that's the non-communist side, for all you history drop-outs) who knows exactly where to go and can spot enemies and traps better than anyone. You have a medic to heal your wounds (although each time he can fix you up a bit less), a radioman so you can keep in constant contact with HQ, as well as a machine gunner and an engineer.

Raven Shield preview
[19:49:30 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The guys over at ActionTrip have posted a preview of Redstorm & UbiSoft's upcoming squad shooter, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, based on a beta build of the game. Here's a bit on the souped up AI: The new on-the-fly order system seems to be function pretty good. Especially with the significantly enhanced AI, which in this case never appeared to falter. Terrorists are usually well-armed and prepared for anything. They are always on full alert and will come in groups if they hear even the slightest whisper. On top of that, the friendly AI has also shown its worth in a number of tight spots. So yeah, your squad is also fully-equipped and well-trained to handle those pesky terrorists. After seeing them in action, you won't regret you have them by your side. Because of their skills and capabilities, issuing orders is a truly satisfying experience. They will always get the appointed job done in a quick and well-organized manner. In fact, in some situations you can easily rely on your R6 compadres to carry out a task completely by themselves; indeed without any directives whatsoever.Hardcore!!

IGI2 preview
[15:13:18 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I saw via VE that ActionRealm has posted a quickie preview of Innerloop and Codeemasters upcoming military stealth shooter, IGI2: Covert Strike. Here's a clip on the weapons: I got to use the MP5A3 sub-machine gun and the G-17 SD sidearm, I could also use Makarov and the MAC10 but I decided to keep my original guns as they had the silencers and "stealth" is supposed to be kept. The Handguns seem to be to far into the center, guess I am used to guns being to the right more. The MP5A3 does look rather nice, I found that the G-17 looked way to square and to high up on the screen, in ways it blocks visibility, but only a minimal amount. The Makarov hand gun looks nice, does not seem to get in the way as much and has a nice bang to it.Not the greatest preview, so don't expect too much from it..

Vietcong preview

Rushian
To keep the Vietnam gaming news flowing, I see that GameSpy has posted a preview of Pterodon / Illusion Softworks upcoming game, Vietcong. Here's some background info: Enter Vietcong, a first-person shooter with strong squad-based tactical elements, set primarily in the jungles of 1967 Vietnam. Being created by Czech developer Pterodon in association with Illusion Softworks (creators of Hidden and Dangerous and last year's excellent Mafia), the game will offer a single-player campaign spanning roughly 20 missions, as well as several multiplayer modes. |

Men of Valor: Vietnam
[20:48:37 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The big news tonight is the announcement of Vivendi and Sierra's upcoming game Men of Valor: Vietnam.
The storyline follows the player through the major actions in the conflict, from search and destroy missions around Danang airbase to the Tet offensive and the counterattack on Hue. A cast of AI controlled characters accompanies the player through the missions, and he learns their value and mourns their loss as the war progresses. The game will support a cooperative mode that allows the player to experience the entire tour of duty with his friends, and various multiplayer modes allow the player to experience the war from the perspective of North Vietnamese Army or Viet Cong guerillas as well as US Forces.Expected release date is sometime in 2004. The first few shots can be found at ToTheGame or WorthPlaying.

Lots of news in the Battlefield: 1942 arena tonight. First up, the expansion pack Road to Rome has gone gold and will be on store shelves in early February. RS preview
[17:58:40 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Nicely coinciding with the RS MP demo patch is a Raven Shield preview at Australian gaming site GameBiz. Here's a highlight: Controlling your teams through the user-friendly interface “Wind Rose” you can order your teams to breach and enter, and throw flash bangs, tear gas and smoke, before entering. You can control each team, depending upon your preferred tactics. The development team went to a lot of trouble to make sure Raven Shield was tactically realistic visiting Fort Bragg home of the US Special Forces. Where lead game designer Mike McCoy, and technical adviser, Mike Grasso experienced the effects of teargas and flashbang grenades. Ensuring the special effects for the teargas, smoke and flashbang are spectacular. Deploying the flashbang into a room whites out the screen, a ringing in the ears, and creates frozen frame images which are slowly reconciled into the emerging existing picture. The teargas causes a harsh sustained visual disorientation effect. We know it'll be good.

IGI2 SP demo/ interview
[11:44:34 EST] by
~~
Rushian
As promised, Codemasters has released the single player demo of IGI2: Covert Strike which weighs in at 138 MB. The mission is set in a goldmine in the Carpathian foothills of Romania and sees David Jones, our IGI (Institute for Geotactical Intelligence) agent, investigating the theft of an advanced nano-technology device by an organised crime syndicate. Mirrors: 3D Gamers, Codematsers (free registration required), Computer Games Online, FileFront, Fragland.net, Gamer's Hell, and Tiscali Games. In other IGI2 news, there's also an interview with Henning Rokling, Interloop's Managing Director over at Gaming Invasion. Here's a clip: The stealth element is much much stronger than in Project IGI. The AI’s response is controlled by their ability to hear and see you. If you crouchwalk silently and stay in the shadows, you won’t be spotted until your under their nose. If you come running out into the light, you’re gonna have the entire compound coming after you in five seconds. |

Another BF:RtR preview
[16:46:26 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GamesDomain is yet another site that's posted a Battlefield 1942: Road to Rome preview for your reading enjoyment. Here's the obligatory snip: The biggest change is the move to Italy. Digital Illusions chose the often overlooked theater of war as the focus of its expansion pack because it compressed all of the intense action in which Battlefield 1942 specializes into narrow spaces. This, plus the ability to add the distinctive terrain of the boot-shaped peninsula, was what attracted the development team to the new region. Well, that and the desire to depict a few of the Second World War's more dramatic set-piece battles. For the expected 20 bucks, ya probably can't go wrong.

DD2 review
[13:47:26 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Gaming Guru has posted a quickie review of nFusion Interactive's Deadly Dozen 2: Pacific Theater, where it scores a solid 75% overall. Here's the heart of it: Although Pacific Theater plays pretty much like the first Deadly Dozen, the mission goals are pulled from a standard set of objectives, and it seems that you're always sent in to rescue somebody, assassinate somebody else, or blow something up, there is many more options during a mission, especially drivable vehicles, multiplayer modes (the original Deadly Dozen has no multiplayer option) and ability to play through the single-player levels cooperatively makes this game really enjoyable. Some missions are pretty good, such as the Tarawa level in which you start off on the beach with dead marines littering the beach, you have to drive tanks and kick'em assIndeed! There are also 59 (!!) screenshots to check out as well.

Road to Rome preview
[11:18:32 EST] by
~~
Rushian
There's a Battlefield 1942: Road to Rome preview up at pc.ign, which goes into some pretty good deatail on what we can expect from this ex-pack. Here's some of the goods: Road to Rome covers one of the more overlooked campaigns in popular media. Italy was a big turning point in the war, removing one of the Axis points and clearing the path for a southern advance into Germany. The six new maps cover some of the major points of this campaign and offer some awesome gaming opportunities. Each of the maps has definitely been shown the same amount of care that draped onto the first set.The article also includes a ton of screenshots and movies at the end too. Check 'em out!

DFBHD preview
[14:13:43 EST] by
~~
Rushian
CVG has posted a quickie preview of NovaLogic's lastest installment to the DF series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. Here's a snip to start you off: The four levels in the new beta code were clearly chosen to show off the diversity of action Novalogic has crammed into the game this time round, and they do so with considerable aplomb. Rather than splitting different types of action up into different levels, each mission is a carefully scripted blend of styles, broken up into several short, pacey, objective-led bursts. It's a strictly linear approach and at times completely on-rails, but it does make for an exciting pseudo squad-based romp.Have to admit, I didn't much like the rail-shooter aspects of the SP demo... In other DF:BHD news, VE reports that the release date of the game is slated for March 25th. Check out the full press release here.

Vietcong character update
[13:21:36 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The official Vietcong website has updated their character proifile section for the game's radioman. Here's some of the guy's bio: Peter was smart, maybe too smart for his own good, because he was also quite arrogant and liked to pick on others. His mouth got him into quite a lot of fights in high school. Peter James always thought himself the best around the block and he was partially right. His father always said, that to be fighter pilot you must be the best and Peter always wanted to be best. He wanted others know he is best. So he chose Air Force Academy instead of MIT as his father suggested.Six new shots are included as well. [Update]: There are also some more shots over at the Vietcong Czech Fansite. (Thanks Blue's news) Looking sweet... |

BF: Road to Rome preview
[9:35:38 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Those little green men at GameSpy have posted a preview of Road to Rome, EA's ex-pack to Battlefield 1942 which details the new maps and vehicles to be found in the expansion. Here's a clip: There are still five basic infantry units, but some small changes have been made, such as the addition of bayonets to the engineers' rifles. Health is no longer restricted to the cabinets inside some of the control points; some can be found in the form of crates, placed in the similar manner as the ammo crates from the original game. Some of the mounted machine guns on the new maps also provide a greater amount of protection than before, but aren't invincible -- they can be completely destroyed, instead of respawning after a period of time. The ex-pack should hit the streets sometime in February and have a retail price of 20 bucks.. |

GR: Island Thunder review
[23:37:55 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I saw via Blue's News that Australian site GameFeeder has posted a review of Redstorm and UbiSoft's Island Thunder expansion pack for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, where it scores an 88%. Take a look: Island Thunder has the hardest AI in any game I have encountered and unless you are able to think about how you are going to take or have basic tactical knowledge you may find yourself and your entire team dead very quickly. The enemy shooters are both intelligent and crack shots, making full use of their snipers. You can try and change the difficulty setting to Recruit however you may find it may not help that much. Make no mistake though Island Thunder will challenge your shooting skills and tactical skills. To the point you may get frustrated. Getting hit by the unseen enemy is frustrating and occasionally you are left thinking, where, where are they?

Vietcong news
[22:52:24 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The folks over at pc.ign have posted a preview of Illusion Softworks' upcoming 'Nam game, VietCong, based on the MP demo. Here's a snip: If you'd like to stand out a bit more in terms of class selection, you can also opt to take on the role of an M1 Garand- or Winchester-equipped sniper or an M60-toting machine gunner. Engineers provide a quick avenue of resupply for depleted ammo cases while the medic, well, you ought to be able to figure that out yourself. More interesting is the radio operator. At first, this class seemed to be the most unnecessary of all. But given his ability to call in air strikes, arrange evacs and gather intel, he can quickly become absolutely indispensable. In more Vietcong news, check out Take 2's Jungle War: Vietcong promo site. IGI2 previews
[18:44:33 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Two IGI2: Covert Strike previews have hit the 'net today, both based on the IGI2 MP demo. First up is one at HomeLAN Fed, where they had this to say: The objectives in the IGI 2 multiplayer map are interconnected with each other. The "good guy" team of IGI agents have to upload a virus in a computer system in one building, then move on to another location to steal a set of documents. Finally, the final location has the good guys attempting to plan a bomb to destroy a portion of the location. The "bad guy" team has to stop all of this from happening, and they have help with security cameras that can trigger alarms if they see the good guys coming.Next up is a preview at LoadedInc. Here's a slice from that: There is a lot of scope for team play, tactical assaults, and planned defending, but the ones and zeroes of this game are killing and dying, and frequently. It’s not as easy to die as in, say, Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon: people can take a little more damage. However, this is not Unreal Tournament or Quake – you’re supposed to be human and not some souped-up super-soldier with health packs waiting…Both previews have a nice selection of screenshots to check out as well.

[19:12:25 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I saw by way of VE that GameSpot has posted a preview of BF1942: The Road to Rome, EA's upcoming expansion pack to their smash hit Battlefield: 1942. Here's a bit on the new weapons that will be included: The Road to Rome does feature a few new infantry weapons for when soldiers don't have a chance to jump into a vehicle. The most impressive is the machine gun that Italian assault-class soldiers carry, the Breda Modello. This gun has a side-mounted magazine and fires powerful rounds at a rate that's rather slower than the previous guns for assault soldiers. There's also the British-made Sten SMG, which the French soldiers carry.Should be a winner..
