Petr from 7fx sent word that they've updated the Team Factor website with a finished version of "the German Fallschirmjaegers squad of the Blue team. You can consider it as our tribute to the 10th anniversary of Germany re-unification ;-)" Def looking good..

H&D 2 info [21:47:44 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The unofficial H&D 2 site has posted tons of news on IllusionSoft's game-in-progress, Hidden & Dangerous 2. Topics included the game interface, mission types, and multiplayer. Here's a snip on the new multiplayer modes:
But there is more, one of the more interesting mulitplayer modes will be the stealth games, now these do sound fun, here is an example:

One team guards a base and in the base is either an important prisoner or artefact, the other team all equipped with silencers and other stealth goodies have to enter the base and steal, kidnap or rescue the required object or person. I can see stress levels running high on this one.
I really hope they fix the MP interface, as it's pretty awkward now..

Operation Flashpoint preview [21:27:04 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a preview of Codemasters upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint. Here's a snip:
The game has plenty of atmosphere, but what about squad-based action? While Hidden & Dangerous put you in charge of four commandos, Operation Flashback is promising control of a squad of up to 12 soldiers - each of whom will operate independently when not under your direct guidance. The types of troops under your command will be equipped with anti-tank missiles, grenade launchers, and hand-held anti-aircraft missiles, as well as soldiers dedicated to specific tasks like medics, sabateurs, snipers, mine layers and mortar carriers.
Interesting stuff indeed. Can't wait..

COE review #94 [15:59:06 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Electric Playground has posted their review of RedStorm Entertainment's Covert Operations Essentials, concluding "diehard fans of Tom Clancy’s work will find Covert Ops Essentials to be a goldmine on the subject of anti-terrorism and Special Forces tactics. But action fans will no doubt be somewhat disappointed by the short campaign – albeit the new multiplayer maps more than make up for the lack of new single player campaign-style missions." They gave it a rather generous 8/10 overall..

DF:LW weapons [17:12:17 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Continuing with our DF:LW news, the boys over at Land-Warrior.com sent word that they've completed the weapons breakdown of all the weapons in the game. Here's what they sent:
Just to let you know that at land-warrior.com we now have real world information on each and every weapon you'll be able to use in Delta Force: Land-Warrior due for US release on November 8th.
Lots of good info in there for you stats freaks.

DF:LW shots [17:08:08 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I don't think all of these are new, but Games Extreme has posted 6 shots of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior. I got a feeling we'll be seeing a ton of these in the next few weeks. Thanks TacSim.

SWAT3:EE review [6:41:36 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Checkout.com has posted a review of Sierra's recently-released game, SWAT3: Elite Edition, the multi-player enhancement pack for the original SWAT3: Close Quarters Battle, scoring it with a 9 overall. Here's how they sum it up:
Simply put, if you loved SWAT 3, this upgrade is a blessing. And if you resisted SWAT 3 because of its lack of multiplayer, you're out of excuses now. Great work, Sierra.
I think they liked it.

2 DF:LW interviews [6:28:50 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
VoodooExtreme (welcome back!) posted word of 2 new Delta Force: Land Warrior interviews with NovaLogic's Wes Eckhart to hit the net.

First up, is GameCenter's interview. Here's a snip from that:
GC: Here's the big question: What's in Land Warrior that's going to make people want to stop playing Counter-Strike and Rogue Spear?

W. E.: Those are two great games, and they're both popular here at NovaLogic. But Delta Force: Land Warrior does offer some things they don't. The outdoor environments and long viewing distances are a big part of that; when you can have sniper engagements at such long range that you have to account for wind and bullet drop, it makes for a very different experience. Add to that the fact that we can now do indoor environments like the other guys, and we've really got the best of both worlds.

Next up, is an interview with new pics over at pc.ign.

DF:LW interview

Here's the usual snip:
IGNPC: What kinds of environments can we expect to see in the game?

Wes Eckhart: The game will take place all over the globe, including Egypt, Lebanon, Central Europe, the Mediterranean, Japan, Mexico and South America. Players will face deserts, grassy hillsides, sandy beaches and riverbanks, in addition to the new, detailed interiors of buildings found in each region.

Delta Force: LW GOLD [11:44:53 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior has gone gold, and therefore off to mass duplication for retail release by November 8th. Here's a snip from the PR:
DELTA FORCE: ®LAND WARRIOR[TM] MASTERS
Gamers Get Ready to Resume Anti-Terrorist Operations

CALABASAS, CA (October 27, 2000) - Delta Force: Land Warrior, the third in NovaLogic's popular series of special forces action games, has mastered and will appear in retail stores throughout North America by November 8. Built on a new graphics engine, Delta Force: Land Warrior uses the power of today's 3D accelerator cards to produce smoother, more attractive visuals while retaining the unique advantages of the voxel-based engines that drove the original Delta Force and Delta Force 2. The result is a game that gives players the best of both worlds: the long viewing distances and vast outdoor battlefields that distinguished the first two games, plus large, complex interior environments previously unseen in a Delta Force game.
Can't wait..

Project IGI preview [18:23:03 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a preview of Innerloop's upcoming game, Project IGI, which by now should be pretty close to completion. Also included are a few new pics.

IGI preview

Here's a snip on the game engine:
TerraForm's real advance over conventional engines is that it's in true 3D, and is capable of handling both vast landscapes and advanced terrain features like caves and overhangs. It looks splendid in action, with a huge variety of convincing real-world environments, from the dusty plains of Africa to the ice fields of Murmansk. With some equally detailed base and interior environments, excellent weather effects including fog and rain, and over one million square kilometres of terrain, you'll be able to actually hike to mountains that you can see on the horizon and it promises Delta Force-style multiplayer combat on a much vaster scale.

Operation Flahspoint site opens [17:06:47 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)

DF:LW chat log [15:06:39 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
StarHawk from IntelGamer sent word that they've posted a log of the live chat they held yesterday with NovaLogic about Delta Force: Land Warrior, which sould be in stores by Nov 8th. Here's a sample Q&A:
Will you be able to choose just a M4 or Styr Aug without the Grenade launcher, in turn you can carry more ammunition?

Nope. However, you will have a slot that's dedicated to sub-machine guns, to give you an added bit of firepower. This should work out especially well for the snipers.
YES! You can finally carry a sniper rifle and a SMG.. I like it!

Team Factor interview [22:01:52 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Frag4Ever has posted an interview with 2 of the guys from 7fx who are working on Team Factor. Here's a clip:
FRAG4EVER: How did you get the idea to create Team Factor ?

Marek: We are big fans of on-line games, especially Counter-Strike. It is a very good game but we think there are some things missing which we would like to have in Team Factor. For example: specializations and evolution of players, a bit more reality, better team co-operation, voice chat, planning of actions etc. I think we are bringing very much of our own ideas, improvements and fun into Team Factor, so it won’t end up being just a better version of CS..
Check out the rest.

DF:LW pics / updated demo [1:39:21 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
NovaLogic sent 26 screenshots to the guys over at Delta Force HQ. Most of 'em we've seen already, but there seem to be a few new ones in there. (As usual, I had trouble loading the page in NS, but IE works fine.. Why is NS forcing me to switch to IE.. Hmmm...)

In related news, NL has released an updated DF:LW demo weighing in at 24 MB. The only difference is the updated character pic for Gas Can. Head over to Delta Force HQ for the DL link and a link to a pic of the new game screen. Prob not worth the DL unless you don't have it already, or really want the new pic of Gas Can.

Thanks again to Blue's for the news.

SWAT3: EE review [1:18:49 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Happy Puppy has posted a review of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, giving it an overall rating of 8 out of 10. Check out the goods:
The single and multiplayer AI responds not only to your actions, but also to your inaction or indecision. If you pause in one place for too long, you can rest assured an AI or live opponent will find you and demonstrate merciless precision. There are over 150 types of characters to contend with in a match, including hostages, terrorists and the live members of your up-to-five-man element.
Chalk up another good review for Sierra.

COE interview [1:10:29 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Rainbow Six Center has put up an interview with RedStorm's Steve Cotton where they discuss all things Covert Ops. Here's a taste:
There have been mixed emotions about Covert Ops. Were you at all surprised by this?

Yes and no. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Covert Ops Essentials is a multimedia product with some very cool levels included as a bonus. Because it came from Red Storm, I think a lot of people expected a mission pack, which it clearly isn't, it's more of a teaser for people that have never played any of the Rainbow franchise, but bought it to learn, and for those that have, some new levels to play. I think some people are buying Covert Ops more for the levels, which might be disappointing to them. But I think there’s a lot to be gained out of the first CD, which has so much information on the real world of special operations.
More good stuff in there (like how the jungle level was designed), so do check it out.

Urban Ops server [23:13:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Victor from IntelGamer sent word that they've set up an Urban Ops MP server. Here's the lowdown:
This server will hold 16 people. To play you have to have Nato3 along with the new Covert Ops, also Roosters guns2. The server is fully automatic and currently up on a T1 line 24/7. The IP is 63.89.123.120 and it also hosts over 50 maps.
Head on over if you're into some R6 action...

Ok, we've seen a bunch of these already, and they all pretty much say the same thing ("not enough missions, weak training materials that don't actually relate to the game, only worth it if you're new to the R6 series", etc), so I'm just gonna link these:

DF:LW shots [16:49:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
While I can't swear these are new, Avault has posted 2 screenshots of NovaLogic's upcoming game, Delta Force: Land Warrior, and a small article to go along with it.

DF:LW shots

Here's a blurb:
The game, which is close to going gold and slated to be in stores Oct. 31, will be a new product from the ground up, starting with an all-new, accelerated graphics engine. Featuring support for all major 3D accelerators, ranging from 3dfx's Voodoo2 to the newest cards, the new engine gains all the performance benefits of cutting-edge 3D acceleration while retaining the strengths of the voxel-based engines that powered the previous Delta Force titles. The long-range outdoor encounters that gave those games their uniqueness will also grace Land Warrior, letting people see and engage opposing soldiers at distances of 1,000 meters or more.
In stores Oct 31st? Thats only 10 days away!

FlashPoint does Voice Over Net? [7:40:21 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
GameCyclus Network (German gaming site) conducted a interview with Marek Spanel (lead developer of Operation Flashpoint) In the interview he talks about the engine, communicating with soldiers and even hinted at voice over net communication like in Team Fortress 2. The interview is in English and German.

SWAT3 shots galore [0:48:15 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Whilst browsing over at EvilAvatar, I noticed that GameBasement has posted 50+ shots of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition. Here's how they sum it up:
The best single feature of SWAT 3 is the incredible realism of the level designs. These levels were designed in the same WorldCraft editor used for games like Quake and Half-Life. Yet the levels in SWAT 3 are, without a doubt, the best looking "realistic" levels I've seen in any first person shooter to date. They simply put Rogue Spear and Counter-Strike maps to shame!

SWAT3:EE shots

Pretty hefty claim, but I'd have to agree..

COE review [0:16:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GamePower has posted their review of RedStorm's Covert Ops Essentials. Here's how they kick it off:
Depending on how you look at it, Covert Ops Essentials is either a multimedia reference or an expansion pack for Rogue Spear. If it's the former, it's a questionable, second-rate alternative to Web browsing. If it's the latter, it's painfully low on content.
Ouch..

Rogue Spear article [0:04:18 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via SimHQ that Action Trip has posted a 'soldiers view' of RedStorm's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear / Covert Ops. Here's a snip:
The weapons are definitely an upside of the game. The game features a fine selection of good weapons, and their performance is well depicted. There seems to be too many sub-machine guns, but that is quite OK; counter-terrorists use them a lot because their bullets can't penetrate two walls and kill a hostage. Another good thing in this game is the sound. Actually, there are many good things about this game; it's just that the some of the concept was too much. It deals with the aspects which are too much for a game, and rarely encountered in real-life operations.
They seem a bit tough on it.. It's only a game afterall.

Swat 3 EE Multiplayer [19:43:54 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
What's next for SWAT 3 EE? Well 10-David is reporting the developers are working on adding 10 player support for multiplayer. (Right now only 5 are supported.) Single player will remain at 5 players. (co-op)

In other SWAT 3 EE news, Sierra has released yet another patch (1.66) This patch is no longer beta and is required to play SWAT 3 MP.

Thanks BluesNews

Op Flashpoint details [0:19:57 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Hardly worth mentioning cuz it's so small, (but hey, its not the size that counts! ), and hot on the heels of yesterday's interview (story), GameSpot UK has posted 'details' on Operation Flashpoint, developed by Bohemia Interactive and to be published by Codemasters. There's also a screenshot gallery to check out. Here's a small snip:
In action, Flashpoint gives you a massive 100 square kilometre battlefield to explore with hundreds of different soldiers, vehicles, tanks and helicopters that you can drive or pilot and a wide variety of mission objectives to achieve. With a massive multiplayer element in the works, we reckon it could be the first game to offer a genuine online virtual battlefield experience.
Give it a look.

COE review #74 [21:50:29 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's News pointed me in the direction of a review of RedStorm's Covert Operations Essentials over at GameZone. Here's a snip:
However, there are still some problems. Nothing is more frustrating than stalking a tango (this is the covert op term for an enemy...hey, I'm no expert, so I have to assume some of you reading this aren't either) and suddenly getting shot in the face, only to see the other members of your unit innocently stroll into the same hail of bullets. You watch them drop like rocks as you desperately pound the keyboard in an attempt to speed up the painfully slow death animation and allow you to switch to another operative.

DF:LW chat [20:43:26 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
StarHawk from IntelGamer.com sent word that they'll be hosting a live chat with the Delta Force: Land Warrior development team on October 25th at 9pm EST. Here's the PR:
The third game in the widely popular Delta Force series, Delta Force: Land Warrior, is scheduled to be released on November 2nd. The game promises a new graphics engine that supports 3D acceleration for all major video cards and many improvements over its little brothers, Delta Force and Delta Force 2.

What else can we look forward to in Land Warrior? What are the details of the multiplayer environment? What will the future be for "Gas Can"? These and all your questions can be answered on October 25th at 9pm est when Intelgamer host a live moderated chat with the team from Novalogic. Among others attending, Wes Eckhart, the Producer of the Delta Force series, will be there to answer all of your questions. The chat URL will be announced the day of the event. Come early for a good seat and bring your own popcorn. Firearms must be checked at the door.

New IGI preview/movie [20:21:42 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Helza sent word that GamesMania.de has put up a preview (in German) of Innerloop's IGI, complete with a new pic or 2, and a new movie in RealMedia format (13 MB) taken from ECTS and commented on in English. As Helza says, "it really gives you a good impression what Project IGI is all about and what to expect from it.."

In other news, ProjectIGI has opened their weapons page that gives a nice breakdown on the weapons found in the game.

DF1 review [21:45:11 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Gamer's Press has put up a review of the original Delta Force (under their 'junkpile' section, which I take to mean 'bargain bin'.) Here's a clip:
It's pretty easy to take down someone once they've noticed you: wait until they stop to shoot, and get them first. Their first few shots will miss anyhow. The poor AI carries over to your teammates, who usually die in the first few minutes of a mission (partly because they tend to charge in much more recklessly than any human). This wouldn't be so bad if you had some control over your teammates, but they're fully scripted and won't coordinate with you at all.

4th SWAT3 mission available [21:15:05 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameCenter plays host to the fourth bonus mission for Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, the Whitman Airport, where you have to stop terrorists from using a small plane to spray anthrax over the greater Los Angeles area. (16.9 MB)

In releated news, Sierra has released another beta patch which fixes some sound problems and issues with the scenario editor.

Operation Flashpoint interview [19:34:49 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via AndOne's Flashpoint site, ColdWar that GameSpot UK has posted an interview with Bohemia Interactive regarding their upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint. Here's a snip on just what the game is about:
Operation Flashpoint is a tactical combat simulation game that simulates a conflict between the Americans and the Russians in 1985 at the height of the Cold War. We've been developing the game for over three years now, since 1997. Most people know Delta Force and that kind of game, this is similar, but we wanted to expand into new dimensions. In this game you can use any vehicle including cars, tanks, planes and boats.
Looking forward to this one as well.

2 more COE reviews [3:34:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Two more Covert Ops reviews have hit the net.

The first review is up at pc.ign, where it scores a 6.4 out of 10. Here's a clip:
But before the elite group ever hits the seedy jungles of Bolivia, sub-zero climes of the Arctic or the missile hidin' heart of America, their toughest challenge must be faced: Officer Candidate School. Those looking for the ultimate database on covert maneuvers need look no further, because the included reference guide covers a dizzying array of subjects ranging from combat gear to key historical ops and hostage negotiation (mind you, we're talking about sanctioned methods, not the Stallone way here).
I think the author was just trying to show off his fancy writing skills, cuz there's not much real info in there.

The second review is up at The Mushroom. Looks like they didn't like it much either:
First and foremost, there are three new single player levels. Yup, that's it, just three. There are also six training missions, but these are so small they are barely worth mentioning. Two sets of them, in fact, looked to be a whole level that was cut in half. First there is Store Front and Store Back, then there's Hospital and Emergency room. When you play through these in the training mode they only have a few terrorists, and there isn't much to do. I breezed through them all in about half an hour. I hardly count those training missions as anything more than warm-ups.
All these reviews are sounding pretty much the same these days... Seems like there's just not too much in the package for the serious gamer.

Thanks Blues News.

DF:LW FAQ and character pic [3:07:20 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The boys over at SniperShot have posted a new FAQ from NovaLogic on their upcoming game, Delta Force: Land Warrior. Interesting news is that there is a new look to the Gas Can character after many people remarked he looked too 'cartoony'. Here's a snip from the FAQ:
Q: Will missions in Delta Force: Land Warrior have varied insertion methods like in Delta Force 2?

A: Yes. In addition to the parachute and Black Hawk helicopter insertions we had in DF2, we'll also have some insertions via Zodiac boat.
Be sure to check out the new Gas Can pic. He looks a lot better now..

COE review [2:53:55 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
TUCOWS Gaming has put up a small review of RedStorm's Covert Ops (which they say will be updated later with a more in-depth look at the training portion of the package.) Here's a snip:
The new guns that came with Urban Operations are gone. I was bummed they took away the AW Covert silenced sniper rifle. I was hoping for some new weapons or anything new, but there was nothing except maps and the training CD, which really doesn't rock my boat as far as gaming is concerned.
Me neither.. The actual missions are just too skimpy..

DF:LW preview [2:34:30 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PC.IGN has posted a preview of NovaLogic's tactical combat sim, Delta Force: Land Warrior, chock full of info, pics, a weapons list, and character bios.

DF:LW preview

Here's a snip on the missions and storyline:
Once you've got your character and enough guns to equip a small army, it'll be time to put them to use. Thirty single player missions will ship with the game including one training mission, ten quick missions, and nineteen campaign missions. The basic storyline in the game will pit your team up against two related terrorist groups that are playing with nuclear weapons. Silly terrorists.

SWAT3 updates [2:17:12 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The third bonus mission, the Hollywood Hills, for Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition has been released, this time hosted at Daily Radar.

Rainbow 6 map tools [3:59:22 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Perhaps feeling the pressure from the web petition, and trying to match Sierra, RedStorm has decided to release the tools and 3DMAX plug-ins needed to make new maps for Rogue Spear/Urban Ops. Here's the quote from RSE's John Sonedecker:
I am here to say that the map building tools used by the development team for Rogue Spear and Urban Ops should be released to the public in the coming weeks.

I do not have an exact date, but it will be before the end of November if all goes well. I am working with a few select people to ensure that the tools are well enough documented to get aspiring map builders started as well as having them test out the package to see if I missed anything.

As you can probably guess, these tools will be completely unsupported by RSE. I will be available in the Mods forum to answer as many questions as I possibly can. It is my hope that one or more fan sites will cater to the map building community and I can help make sure that they get off to a good start. Keep in mind that I, as well as any of the other level builders, will be helping out on our own time and that help may be sporadic at times.

What will be included:
1. Level tagging plugin (editor) for Max 2.5 and 3.x
2. Level exporting plugin (exporter) for Max 2.5 and 3.x
3. Lighting tool to light exported levels (also used to profile levels)
4. 2 sample maps for each version of Max to show how things are done
5. At least 2 tutorials to get you started
6. Help files for the exporter, editor and lighting tool
7. Reference help file for exporter and editor
8. RSB plugins for Photoshop and ACDSee

That is the basic list of what is included. As I said earlier, I am working with a few outside people to make sure that what is included is enough to get started with and understandable.

I will give out more info when there is more to give out.
Sounds like just the ticket to get ya started at least. Let the mapping begin!

Thanks to TacSim and Suicide_Commando for the head's up.

New IGI movie [16:55:45 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Bart from Gaming Shrimp (?! ) sent word that they've posted a nearly 9 minute movie (in zipped ASF (6.8MB) or streaming format) from a beta of Innerloop's I'm Going In which shows a mission on a Russian airbase and loads of action.

Thanks to Helza from our affiliate ProjectIGI.com for also letting me know about it.

Update: I finally had time to look at the vid. Not the greatest quaility (cam-corder off the screen?), but what I saw I did like. The mission briefings seemed pretty cool, kinda Metal Gear Solid-like, with in-game cut-scenes, and any time ya have a helicopter insertion it's cool. Once they landed and started running around, I also liked the terrain. It looked pretty realistic, and had all kinds of hills and valleys (albeit a bit angular, but not too bad..) The texture work looked excellent too.

Other cool things I saw were the serious zoom on the binocs; that'll come in handy to scope out the enemy base before ya get close. Also the re-load animation was def cool to see, as were the silent knife kills. And the death animations were a hoot! I like the switch to 3rd-person when you hack the security system, and climb ladders. Again, kinda reminding me of MGS.. Very cinematic.

All in all, I'm def looking forward to IGI..

DF:LW weapons info [18:11:42 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Tanx from Land-Warrior.com sent word that they've updated their DF:LW weapons page with info on the 2 machine guns found in the game, the M249 SAW and FN MAG. Here's some of the info on the FN MAG:
Adopted by more than 20 countries, including USA (under designation M240) and UK (L7). After extensive operational and technical tests, the US Army type classified the Fabrique Nationale MAG as the M240B 7.62mm medium machine gun as a replacement for the M60 series machine guns. Used as a fixed machine gun, the M240 also replaced the M73/M219 7.62mm and the M85 .50 cal. tank machine guns.

Yet another COE review [18:25:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
While browsing SimHQ I saw that Avault has put up a review of RedStorm's Covert Ops, complete with a nice selection of screenshots.

COE review

Here's a snip on the gameplay:
If it's not clear already, Covert Ops is more a reference tool than a mission pack; nowhere is that more apparent than in the anemic offerings of the mission disc. The full missions have no cohesive storyline, are much smaller than most of the maps in Rogue Spear, and favor generic environments to real-world locations. Furthermore, the mission objectives and map layouts offer nothing new to experienced Rainbow Six players. Indeed, the six smaller maps feel like they started life as medium-sized maps, but were bisected so that Covert Ops could claim to have nine missions in all. Each of these "training maps" takes about 30 seconds to complete using a default mission plan. The lack of new features and the removal of the new weapons found in Rogue Spear: Urban Operations makes Covert Ops fall extremely short in the gameplay category.
Ouch.

IE 5.5 glitch [20:01:12 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There seems to be a glitch when loading the site with IE 5.5 for some people (myself included, but I prefer Netscape..)

The site uses some embedded JavaScript code to detect your screen res, and spawns a new page with either 2 or 3 frames depending on how wide your view is. The left-most frame should be the site menu, but it doesn't always seem to come up in IE 5.5. If you hit your back button twice, it seems to load in (sometimes..)

Netscape or previous version of IE don't have that problem it seems. I already tried 're-coding' the site to work around the problem, but so far no luck. Alternately, you can bookmark the 3 frame hi-res (http://www.SpecForce.net/HiRes.htm) or the 2 frame lo-res (http://www.SpecForce.net/LoRes.htm) page directly which seems to work.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully a future version of IE will not have this problem. In the mean time, I'll continue to look for a solution.

COE review [18:58:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
My daily check of news at SimHQ revealed a review of RedStorm's Covert Operations Essentials over at GameOver, where it scores a rather low 55%. Here's a snip:
Red Storm Interactive has done something very unique with Covert Ops Essentials, they've combined an expansion pack with a multimedia counter-terrorism reference. It might have worked if they had actually included... an expansion pack. Nine, cough*three*cough, missions doesn't quite constitute an expansion pack to me. It also would have helped if the information from the training program translated at all to the missions provided in Covert Ops Essentials. Gamers aren't going to improve their skills by reading up on sniper tactics and then heading out into the battlefield known as Rainbow Six.

Private Wars Interview [16:59:32 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
GA-Source has a interview with TS Group (makers of Private Wars: Silent Trigger)
Silent Trigger will feature a dramatic storyline that will unfold in series of episodes released on a regular basis. While the story will be more "realistic" that ones in Hideo Kojima's masterpiece (i.e. Metal Gear) and it'll provide enough excitement for players to want more. At least we hope so. The game itself will also contain lots of NPC interactions and dialogues.
Will it ever come out?

OF interview [0:20:59 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In more Operation Flashpoint news, GameLoft UK has posted an interview with Marek Spanel, lead designer on the game. Apparently they got to test drive a current build as well. Here's how they describe the game:
First impressions of the game are amazing; the player is dropped into a massive environment, like a more gritty and detailed version of a Tribes landscape, surrounded by detailed, smoothly animated soldiers and realistic modern military hardware. Your team-mates can be controlled from an overhead view, while you yourself move around in first-person; in fact, the view can be zoomed out smoothly so that it shows a map of the entire island on which the action takes place. If walking somewhere doesn't seem like fun, you can hop into one of a myriad of beautifully modelled vehicles, from cars through APCs to helicopters, and take them wherever you like on the map.
Lots of goodies in the interview as well. Do check it out. Thanks to me for that bit of news..

DF:LW interview [19:10:18 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blues News that Gamers Depot has posted an in-depth interview (and lots of new screenshots) with Novalogic's Wes Eckhart where they talk about NL's upcoming game, Delta Force: Land Warrior.

DF:LW interview

Here's a snip:
GD: In terms of gameplay, Delta Force and Delta Force 2 were pretty much the same, and many would agree that Delta Force 2 wasn’t much of an improvement over the first game. So what can we expect new and exciting in Delta Force: Land Warrior in the area of gameplay?

Wes Eckhart: "Delta Force: Land Warrior will still have the expansive outdoor environments that everyone loved in the first two games, but now you’ll also be able to take your battles indoors to highly detailed interior environments in structures around the world, such as the Egyptian pyramids, big underground compounds, and corridors within oil rigs. Taking your battles inside means that you can really take advantage of your close-quarters battle skills, whether it’s sneaking up to knife a terrorist or taking someone down with the Glock 18 machine pistol."
Great stuff..

More COE reviews [2:17:05 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw at SimHQ that PC GameWorld has posted a review of RedStorm's Covert Ops, which goes into a lot of detail about the training portion of the game. Here's a snip:
The database is amazing. The detail is exhausting. Available at the click of your mouse button is information sorted on different levels. On the first level are Planning, Field Encryption, Tactical Awareness, Explosives, and Uniform and Kit Selection. You navigate the database through a nodeball system -- a spherical 3D representation of the database, accompanied by eerie music in the background. Click on Explosives and you are zoomed to another nodeball showing the different kinds of explosives for which detailed information is available. In other words, there is a nodeball within each nodeball.
Overall, the game scored a 93%.

On the other end of the spectrum, Daily Radar has also posted thier review, and scored it as a "miss". Here's a bit on that:
Obviously there is some worth to this resource, especially if you just can't get enough of the "special forces" milieu. But the most ardent fans have already seen this information, and the mildly curious will either be inspired to ignore it completely or to seek out better resources of information. The grabber and reason for buying should be the new missions for Rainbow Six.

Too bad they don't quite measure up.
Just goes to show ya, ya can't be all things to all people..

DF:LW 'hands on' [18:07:56 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a hands-on look at NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, complete with 5 new screenshots.

DF:LW preview

Here's a clip:
Delta Force Land Warrior is based on new visual technology, with a proprietary 3D-accelerated engine giving it decent performance indoors, while retaining superb visuals outside. The other big change is that you can now select your on-screen persona from five hardened veteran soldier types, each with their own combat specialities. There's a sniper, a demolitions expert, an aquatic warfare expert, a heavy weapons expert and a close combat specialist. Choose the right one for the mission in hand and away you go.
Thanks TacSim for the news.

COE review [16:49:19 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at GameSpy have put up a review (with some nice screenshots) of RedStorm's latest game in the Rainbow Six line, Covert Operations Essentials. Here's how they sum it up:
Overall, Covert Ops is a nice addition to the Rainbow Six series as a supplement -- especially if you're a history buff and want to learn more about the real-life men and women combating terrorism around the globe. If you are a fan of Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear, and want to have a better knowledge of counter terrorism and long for a few new maps to play, you may want to pick this up. But if you're just looking for a great gaming experience, there's not a whole lot here to satisfy a hardened gamer. If you are not interested in the training CD, then you may want to save your money, or wait for this to hit the discount bins.
That about covers it.

COE review/guide [5:11:50 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via SimHQ that GameCenter has posted a review & strategy guide for RedStorm's recently-released Covert Operations Essentials. Here's a snip from the review:
To sate your bloodlust, Red Storm included nine missions on the second CD of Covert Ops Essentials. Since they're standalone, you don't need Rogue Spear to play these levels. Three of these are single-player missions, and they are some of the best Rogue Spear levels yet, especially the jungle and mission silo levels. The level designers and artists outdid themselves with the jungle level, which comes complete with a waterfall and a rope bridge over a chasm; all the nasty little chokepoints and kill zones on the map are sure to make it a fan favorite. Even better, the designers figured out a way to negate the effectiveness of night vision goggles, which are used by many players to pick out targets quickly. The mist from the waterfall cuts down on the range of the NVGs, and even worse, the camouflage pattern on the terrorists makes them practically invisible against the jungle backdrop when you use goggles.
The strat guide is broken down into 14 categories and covers such topics as using grenades, being stealthy, giving orders, peeking and much more. Give it a look-see..

H&D 2 interview [20:04:11 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PCZone has posted an interview with Illusion Softworks about their upcoming game, Hidden & Dangerous 2, and a fine one it is. Here's a snip on how complex actions will be handled in the game:
PCZ: At ECTS you were explaining how a single press of a key would execute a series of actions. Can you tell us how this works and how it will enhance the gameplay?

Illusion Softworks: If we find some ordinary action to be problematic as far as the complexity of the keys and so on is concerned, we're going to group it with the actions that are activated by the action key. For example - climbing through an open window. In most games, it is a problem to jump into an opening that isn't as high as the player is. In our solution, it would be enough to simply aim the cursor at the opening and press the action button. The soldier would then automatically climb into the opening. We're trying to make controlling of a complex game, which HD2 indeed is, as simple and accessible to most of people as is possible.
I hope the make ladder climbing a bit easier. It was way too easy to fall off ladders in H&D 1.

COE players guide [19:54:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via SimHQ that Planet Rainbow Six has posted a COE players guide to help you out during the Jungle mission. Here's a snip:
I have always wondered, isn't it terribly hot in the Bolivian jungles? Yet, these terrorists wear Class III body armour complete with faceplate, the same ones as in Urban Operations' Hong Kong map. That means, yes, they are both heavily armoured and they wear GREEN! Same colour as most of what you can see in the Jungle map. That means, there will be times when you simply walk INTO a tango because you never saw him. Now, with such good camo, the human eyes would strain to see them, even zoomed in, they blend in so well. However, Rogue Spear doesn't care if you see it or not, the enemy is displayed on the map if the computer deemed that he is in your operative's line of sight. Thus, if you are not using your HBS but you see a red dot on your map, look closer in that direction and you'll see him fine.
Good stuff for sure.

Operation Flashpoint preview [19:44:16 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from TacSim, I see that Telefragged has posted a preview on Bohemia Interactive's upcomging game, Operation Flashpoint to be published now by Codemasters. Here's a snip on the different classes to be found in the game:
While most games of this ilk let the player command a small group of around 4-6 troops, Operation Flashpoint will allow the player to control a squad of up to twelve troops, which can be hand picked from around thirty different types of soldier, such as; Grenadier, Medic, Sniper, Officer, and Mine soldier, to name but a few. Each have their own specially abilities and equipment that could mean the difference between meeting your mission objective or having your ass splattered across the battlefield.

Battlefield 1942 interview [19:35:55 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The boys from TacSim sent word (twice ) that they've posted an interview with Ola Holmdahl, lead designer on Battlefield 1942, the upcoming 3D shooter from Digital Illusions. Here's a snip on the vehicles to be included in the game:
TS: Can you tell us what vehicles the game will include? Will the player be able to control all of them?

OH: There are currently 23 WWII vehicles, including tanks, cars, APCs (armored personnel carriers) , SPGs (self-propelled guns) , fighters, bombers, carriers, battleships, destroyers, submarines and landing craft. A player will be able to control each of these. We have generally included famous vehicles that were produced in significant numbers, and distinguished themselves in service. Examples include T-34s, Panzer IVs, Shermans, Jeeps, Gato class submarines, Bf-109s, P-51s, Ju87s, Yamato class battleships, and quite a number of other vehicles of all kinds.
More great info in there as well; give it a look.

IGI preview [18:06:53 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Helza from Project IGI.com sent word of an IGI preview over at IntelGamer. Here's a bit on the damage modeling:
Doors and walls are vulnerable enough for bullets to break through. The developers went to extra lengths to make the damage more realistic. For example, if your getting shot at and you run for cover behind a wall, you're still not safe. Bullets from different weapons can slice through walls as if they were a piece of paper. So there is no real place to hide. You think you're much safer indoors than out? Think again!!
I like it.

DF:LW weaps [12:46:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Tanx from Land-Warrior.com sent word that they've posted an article that takes an in-depth look at the assault rifles that will be featured in Delta Force: Land Warrior. The article covers the M4 Masterkey, OICW, AK-47, H&K G11 and Steyr AUG with grenade launcher. Here's a snip from the AK-47 descripton:
Although initially produced at the Kovrov weapons plant where Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov worked in 1946, the AK-47 has been produced all over the world (laregely in the cold war eastern countries) to the order of 50 million rifles. The AK-47 is well known for its reliability and is perhaps slightly synonymous with terrorism. Needless to say the majority of your enemies in DF:Land-Warrior will be wielding AK-47's.

COE level interviews [16:39:14 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from SimHQ, I see that Rogue Spear Retreat has posted an excellent interview with 3 of the level designers on RedStorm's Covert Ops. Here's a snip from the highly-touted Jungle level from Steve Cotton, it's designer:
Were there any features that you wanted to incorporate into the Jungle that you couldn't do because of time or engine constraints?

Steve Cotton - Sure, always...but that’s how we come up with new engine features in the future. I think it’s obvious that our engine was not designed to do outdoor environments, so trying to create one is sometimes difficult, especially if it’s organic and ends up looking like portalized rooms (which is what it is). For the jungle, I wanted to have a mist on the ground in some places and at the bottom of the ravine, I ended up doing some thick fogging to simulate this effect. 3D sounds were very difficult to get right for the waterfall because I wanted it to be loud, and there are limitations with the effects. And most of all, it would be nice if you could destroy the bridge…oh well, maybe next engine.
Def a good read for R6 fans..

Covert Ops review [15:53:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Spoons from SimHQ sent word that they've posted their review of RedStorm's Covert Operations Essentials, complete with a whole bunch of screenshots. Here's how they kick it off:
Say what you will about Red Storm Entertainment, but these folks know how to stretch a product line. It's been five games since the original Rainbow Six back in the early fall of 1998, and their latest addition to the R6 line, Covert Ops Essentials, is a curious hybrid. It's a standalone product, but it's also an add-on for Rogue Spear if you have that game. It's an interactive encyclopedia of Special Operations, but it's also several new missions and maps for the Rogue Spear player who's blown through all of the previous ones. It's designed to introduce new players to the topic of counter-terrorism, but it's also aimed at the more experienced players who want to go deeper into the genre with real-world information.
As usual, this is a very in-depth article. Go check it out.

Our affiliate RainMans' H&D 2 has a short interview with Sep from Illusion Softworks. Here's a snip.
Ojokoltsa: Can you say anything about the campaigns at all? Where over the world can we expect to fight?

Sep: The campaign (Gary Bristol story) will take to these theaters of war:Arctic areas, Africa, Norway, Burma, England, Alps, London, Normandy,Czech (Sumava). Every mission is totally different with different objectives and different environment.

Covert Ops interview [19:42:37 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from Blues is news (a-hem!) of an interview with RedStorm's Elizabeth Loverso, external development manager, where they cover all things Covert Ops.

Covert Ops interview

Here's a clip:
DRUK: How does Covert Operations Essentials continue the Rainbow Six franchise?

Elizabeth Loverso: The franchise is all about giving players a first-hand counter-terrorist experience. COE provides an immersive way to get as deeply into the subject as a player wants. By exploring and interacting with COE, players come to understand the CT experience in much greater depth, and so their experience will be built upon an even firmer context. Also, some of the more practical information in COE will help players to think on their feet and perform better in-game.
There are some cool thumbnails that are included as well. Give it a look.

IGI interview [19:36:21 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that In The Trenches has posted an interview with Stien Pedersen, programmer on Innerloop Studios' upcoming game Project IGI / I'm Going In.

IGI interview

Here's a snip on how the game differs from the current crop of tactical shooters:
[trenches] Project IGI is sort of a stealth title. What makes ist better then others similar titles (such as Rogue Spear, Delta Force or Spec Ops ?)

[pedersen] Heh! The level designers played those games a lot but not me. I'm more into Games like Halflife and Goldeneye. I'd say Project IGI definitely has better graphics and sound than Delta Force et al. If I was to compare it to games like Goldeneye and Half-Life, I would say it has a lot of the same qualities, for example the ease of just picking it up and starting a game without going through endless numbers of configuration screens. The weapons are fun to use and they all have their different strengths and weaknesses, so you must choose which weapon is most efficient for each particular task. What makes our game better, for me personally is the scale of it and the realism. You really feel that it's you against the world when you look down from a mountain top down towards a base and you can see all the way to the horizon...
There are 3 new screens to go along with the interview. Def check it out..

Land Warrior weaps/news [3:42:57 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The boys over at Land-Warrior.com have posted an in-depth look at the submachine guns to be found in Delta Force: Land Warrior, complete with pics, links and lots o' weapon stats. Here's a snip on the H&K MP5SD:
The built in sound and flash surpressor does now require the use of subsonic ammo for optimum surpression. The 'SD' comes from the German word "Schalldämpfer" meaning Sound Dampened. Not truely silent, but certainly not sounding like a gun being fired, the MP5SD is probably as close to silent as you can get in a submachine gun.
Check out the other specs as well.

In other DF:LW news, NovaLogic has picked the winning tagline for the game: "What You Don't See Will Kill You!" Sounds about right

DF:LW FAQ #4 [19:01:39 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys over Land-Warrior have posted FAQ #4 on NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's a sample Q&A:
The different soldiers and their special abilities sound great for single-player, but won't they throw off the balance of an online game? Are there any plans to disable them for multi-player?

We're continually play-testing the game to make sure the soldiers' special abilities are balanced and that no one has an unfair advantage in online play. But for gamers who'd rather do away with the special abilities entirely, we're including an option that lets you disable them when you host a game.

SWAT3:EE news [18:19:24 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
According to the official SWAT3 wbsite SWAT3: Elite Edition has gone GOLD, and should be shipping any day now.

Also in SWAT3 news, Stomped has posted an interview with Sierra's Rod Fung, where they talk all about EE of course. Here's a clip on the multiplayer limit:
Stomped: Some people might be disappointed with the game’s limit of only 5 or 6 people in multiplayer, even though the game can be filled out with AI opponents. What were the reasons why more people could not be accommodated and do you feel the AI opponents will give players a solid multiplayer experience?

Fung: Most of the reason for the 5-player limit has to do with keeping the flavor of the original game, but in a multiplayer environment. Co-operation is the main thrust of SWAT 3 Elite Edition and the five player model fits very well. Keeping the integrity of the original 5-man team concept is also crucial for the communication / command menu that we designed. The AI in SWAT 3 EE are smarter and more aggressive. The AI opponents definitely are tough opponents to go up against in the game.

More IGI info [18:06:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a small blurb on Project IGI / I'm Going In along with 9 screenshots, some of which are new.

IGI news/shots

Here's a snip on what to expect:
Project IGI boasts advanced enemy AI, a wealth of real-life NATO weaponry and equipment, and a winning mix of stealth, forward planning and action in equal measure. The game uses a specially modified version of Innerloop's Joint Strike Fighter engine, codenamed TerraForm, which is capable of handling vast level landscapes and complicated terrain features such as caves and cliff overhangs.

H&D 2 Video [14:12:19 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
Our H&D 2 Affiliate (Rainman's H&D 2) posted a video clip of H&D 2 in action. The video was filmed with a camcorder, so its not the best quality. The video clip was taken from ECTS in London last month and is in real video format. Running time is 3:36 and is 11MBs. It basically shows a soldier running around some levels while someone talks about the features of the game. Like I said, its not great quality, but fans of H&D will want to see some on the new maps.

IGI goodies [22:23:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Helza from our affiliate ProjectIGI.com sent word that UK Clanzone has posted an interview with Innerloop's Anders Dybdahl, one of the senior programmers working on I'm Going In. As usual, I had trouble viewing the page in Netscape, but IE works like a charm. The article includes some great new screenshots as well.

Project IGI interview

Here's a snip on how important it is to be stealthy while playing:
You mention that IGI is "thinker-shooter". I have read previously that you have some interesting new features in IGI, such as the "causality effect". Can you explain this and any other gameplay features we may not have seen in other games of this type?

The way enemy bases work is a good example. Say we are looking at an army base, the perimeter is guarded by patrolling guards, security cameras cover the entrances. There are also vehicles, a helicopter gunship and barracks counting more soldiers. As you approach, you are spotted by a patrol. One guard opens fire, the other runs for a security alarm point. The alarm is raised, the resulting alert brings guards out of their barracks to protect key installations, the vehicles, say an APC, starts it's engines and moves towards you, the choppers rotor blades begin turning and it starts to lift off. That's causality in effect. The same result count be triggered if you were spotted by a security camera.

But if you spotted the security post, slipped in and disabled the security computers, rendering all the cameras inoperative, then you would have a much easier job.
Quite cool indeed... Def check out the new, awesome screenshots as well.

Battlefield 1942 interview [16:42:32 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
John from GameSpy sent word that they've posted an interview with 3 of the project leaders of Digital Illusion's Battlefield 1942. Here's a snip:
The introduction of every class of fighting vehicle changes the premises of the FPS genre radically. Many of the vehicles will be impervious to small arms fire, but vulnerable to other things, and every type of vehicle has limitations in mobility. A submarine cannot fly, a fighter-bomber cannot submerge. [Ya think?! - Rush] Tanks can't climb steep hills or enter narrow cracks the way infantry can. So, with every piece of equipment come possibilities that you must be aware of, and be smarter about than your opponent. Massive vehicles like battleships or strategic bombers seat several players in gun turrets and such.
Lots more great info in there.. Check it out.
