H&D2 review [15:37:41 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (23)
Eurogamer seems to be the first site to post a full review of Illusion Softworks' Hidden & Dangerous 2, their WWII tac shooter released yesterday, and scored it with a very solid 9 / 10. Here's a clip:
On your side is some useful and sharp buddy AI. Your men always alert you to any incoming danger, which appears as a red blob on the appropriate point on your compass, allowing you to focus your attentions on that precise spot. Better still, they're pretty good at taking the aggressors down too, meaning you don't have to do it all on your own. The game also features an ingenious direction indicator on the compass for incoming enemies via a small cone of sound, red for bullets, grey for footsteps. So even when you can't actually see your foe, you can get a good idea of where they are camped out, allowing you to maybe seek cover, lob a grenade or take an alternative route.
Me, I'm still getting up to speed on the game.. I'm finding the control scheme to be somewhat cumbersome (having to frequently take my hand off my mouse to hit keys on the right side of my keyboard, which of course means I can't aim or shoot at that point.) I'm slowly getting the keys mapped to my liking, but I'm not quite there yet. Plus, the new inventory system seems like overkill to me, as does the command trees. The game just isn't very 'streamlined' at all...

H&D2 in stores! [21:17:45 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (2)
Welp, I got my copy of H&D 2. I just got done installing it, and I'm running through the menus now.. My only first impression is that the keyboard remapping sucks. Seems you can't map a key if it's already in use. As the default scheme is not to my liking (and many keys are already mapped to other functions), I'm having a devil of a time remapping my keys.

In order to at least see some of the game, I decided to use the default key map and then I tried out the tutorial. Ha, there's no way I'm ever gonna be able to play this game until I get my keys mapped!

If you've got the game, post your reactions in the comments section!

*Misc. trailers [18:14:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (3)
[Update]: There's a new Hidden & Dangerous trailer over at 3DGamers, showing off around 3 minutes of gameplay footage. Is it me, or are the sound effects rather weak?

Perhaps to soften the blow that Athena Sword is (maybe) delayed, UbiSoft has posted a trailer (14.7 MB) of the game. Mirrors at 3D Gamers or Ubisoft's German FTP Server.

There's also another technology trailer for MoH: Pacific Assault in hi- or lo-res versions available from the European EA FTP site. Grab the one dated 10/22/2003. Mirror at 3D Gamers. This one is def looking sweet!

Delayed or Not Delayed [18:03:57 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Seems that word has surfaced fom C&VG that UbiSoft's Far Cry is now slated to be released in 2004.

Also delayed is Söldner: Secret Wars according to their German website (which hasn't yet been mentioned on their English site.)

In the 'perhaps not delayed' category is word from UbiSoft that Athena Sword, the ex-pack for Raven Shield is still on track for a November release, but possibly only the UK version. I'm sure more info will be forthcoming on this.

Freedom Fighters review [17:48:35 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpy has posted an enthuastic review of IO Interactive's (Hitman series) 3rd-person squad shooter Freedom Fighters and scored it with 4 out of 5 stars. Here's a snip to whet your whistle:
IO did the smart thing and made the control scheme for followers simple but effective. With a tap of a button you can order your squadmates to attack a specific target, stay by your side, or defend a certain area. Once you can command six or eight followers, the game reveals a completely new and thrilling dimension. The latter levels where I led a whole troop of soldiers through wave after wave of entrenched Soviets invaders were, in a word, awesome.
I just picked this up myself, and I'm having a pretty fun time with it (until the dreaded sewer level!)...

    *H&D2 previews & shots [18:24:36 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (2)
Those little green men over at GameSpy have posted a short preview of Illusion Softworks' Hidden & Dangerous 2, which is set for an October 22nd release (this Wednesday!)! Here's some good stuff:
One notable improvement for H&D2 is the addition of vehicles for you to control. H&D2 will still focus on infantry tactics to accomplish your goals, but the vehicles will no doubt add quite a bit to the mix. The game's team claims that the physics for the different jeeps and tanks will be dead-on thanks to the implementation of the Mafia engine (another Illusion Softworks game).
Can't believe it's actually shipping this week! It's been a long time in coming!

[Update]: Three more pics over at Gen Gamers and another preview at C&VG.

  • Chrome goes gold (US) and interview [18:16:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Even though the UK version has been shipping for awhile now, Strategy First has announced that the US-version of Chrome has gone gold, and should be in stores by the end of October.

In other Chrome news, Gaming Gossip has posted an interview with Techland designer Kacper Michalski. Here's a sample Q&A:
GG: Chrome has been described as a tactical shooter – what are some of the features in Chrome that make it different from other first-person shooters currently on the market?

    KM:
First of all, our AI is very demanding and it behaves in unpredictable ways. Running between four opponents equals death in 99% of the cases. The player should choose proper tactics depending on the terrain type, number of opponents, and available equipment and implants. It’s worth mentioning that the AI might act differently even in very similar circumstances. Because of this the player is unable to exactly predict AI’s actions. We wanted Chrome to be a tactical game and a realistic one at the same time – of course without any harm to the game’s playability.

  • RS: Athena Sword delayed [17:49:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Word from the official Rainbow Six: Raven Shield website is that the Athena Sword ex-pack has been delayed to Q1 2004. Here's the rip:
The community has spoken and we've listened.

In keeping with our dedication to create excellent products, the mission pack for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3: Athena Sword, will now be releasing in Q1 2004. The later release will allow us to deliver the quality product we know our fans expect.
That's ok.. There are too many other games out at the moment anyway... 'Tis the Christmas season ya know... Delaying this to 2004 is a good move.

At long last, a demo for a PC version of Halo is available at FilePlanet.com! Wow, is this what I've been missing by sticking with the PC? The lighting, the A.I., the physics, the pyrotechnics, the voice acting, the sound effects...it's all spectacular!

    H&D2 hands-on preview [15:50:55 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (2)
Fugue from The Unofficial H&D 2 website has posted a hands-on preview of Illusion Softworks' long-awaited (and overdue!) tactical shooter, Hidden & Dangerous 2.

    HD2 preview

Here's some of the good stuff:
One of the big changes is in the animations, which are by far the best I’ve seen to date. The use of rag doll physics really stands out, particularly when you hit an enemy, they slump in chairs, slide down walls and snap backwards with limbs flailing, finished off with a bit of twitching (there’s a moderate level of gore). It occasionally goes a bit haywire with legs sticking up at odd angles. Watching a group of enemies in the distance creeping towards you is spookily realistic, the same goes for your teammates who run, walk crawl & climb etc in fluid movements, you’ll have a hard job finding anything better.
This is a very in-depth preview, so def check it out!

Downtime (again)... [17:17:51 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
    Argh, more connection woes!

We upgraded the speed of our connection (3x faster now!), which necessitated a new router. The new router wasn't programmed with the IP mappings of the internal to external IP addresses, so the site fell off the 'net again! icon_evil.gif

If you can read this, the IPs are mapped again, and everything should be fine now! icon_redface.gif

N-Gage Gaming Platform Launched [19:11:00 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
How does the idea of playing first-person shooters on a hand-held console Versus up to 3 other owners of the same within a 30 foot radius strike you? Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, launched their gamedeck, dubbed the N-Gage, today. GameSpy just dished out some rather harsh reviews and first-impressions. One of the complaints is that you have to open the back cover, disconnect the battery, switch out the game cards, replace the battery, and close the back cover. I performed this action, myself, and found it no more annoying than switching out CD's for just about any shooter I own on the PC. Anybody that finds this a major problem is far more pathetic than I am.

I bought one, because the idea of BlueTooth deathmatching sounded like a lot of fun, but when I called Electronics Boutique I found out that Red Faction, which was supposed to be a launch title, would not be available until December 16th. EB's release dates are about 3 months behind what I've been reading, elsewhere, but at the end of the day I don't have Red Faction. It sounds like EB knows what they're talking about. Looks like I'll be watching Lara Croft wiggle her tail feathers, instead.

Ghost Recon is one of the pending titles. I only hope that it will be an FPS, and not a 3rd-person converted to a 2-D, as with Splinter Cell on the N-Gage.

Welp, after some difficulty, we're now back! icon_lol.gif

The change-over to the new ISP went without a hitch, but the old ISP that set up the specforce.net domain 'lost' the account info I needed to get into the account to have the DNS records chaged. Then Network Solutions claimed to never have received my fax to make myself the domain admin. Lost 4 days right there.

I'm still trying to catch up from being away on my business trip, but hopefully the news will be flowing real soon...

    Thanks for stopping by!
