Far Cry preview
[17:06:13 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GamesDomain is the latest site to post a preview (chock full of screenshots) of CryTek and UbiSoft's upcoming mil shooter, Far Cry. Here's a snip: In designing Far Cry, Crytek wanted to produce a game that was cinematic, but not scripted. The only way achieve that was with "smarter than your average bear" AI. Each opponent within the game is spawned along with the player when a level starts. Once the level is populated, that's it. Reinforcements will not magically appear from thin air and the computer does not have an unlimited supply of men.Sounds good to me.. Release is set for February 2004. Related News |

Firewall working finally!
[17:06:09 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Welp, after 3 tries, we now have a working firewall at the office (with built-in virus scanning and email filtering to boot!) Tried a NetGear unit first, but no go, then tried a LinkSys, and while it worked for a day, it couldn't handle the traffic we needed (and it stopped working completely on the 2nd day too.) Finally we got a SonicWall unit and now everything finally seems to be working. Murphy's Law of "Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong" certianly proved correct this week! |

[Update]: Still having firewall issues Welp, the hardware firewall we have protecting our network from evil decided to die last night. So off to the store bright and early this morning to get a new firewall. Won't configure to our network. Not only that, we had not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR power failures today as well! It was just 'one of those days'...... But hey, at least everything's working now (kinda!!) As always, thanks for stopping by! |

Far Cry Multiplayer Hands-On
[18:03:22 EST] by
~~
Uziyahu
http://pc.ign.com/ had a chance to give Far Cry's multiplayer a work-out. They seem to be impressed. I, however, am not sure that I dig some of the "balance in favor of realism" aspects of the game. We'll see. It certainly looks like it is worth a closer look.

Rainbow Six 3 on the Xbox

Traditionally, this site hasn't covered games on the Xbox, but it has been dedicated to the tactical 1st-person shooter genre. The Xbox has become a gaming option that numerous PC gamers have found difficult to ignore, with many of them owning both a PC and an Xbox. When a franchise like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series hits a console, it is news worth covering. Thankfully, WorthPlaying has done the work for us. (Resistant to change, I don't own an Xbox.) Enjoy the C-Mag of screenshots showing off the game's awesome lighting.

Counter-Strike Hits the Xbox!
[5:07:30 EST] by
~~
Uziyahu
I used to bash Counter-Strike, never having played it. I was guilty of the elitism that afflicts those who prefer realism in their tactical first-person shooters. Then, I played CS on a LAN, and from that cheatless experience I gained a new-found respect for the game, namely that it is at least as good as Rogue Spear. One of the big problems with playing CS online is the existence of cheats and those who use them, but now Counter-Strike has hit the Xbox! This, of course, means that you can play the game without any cheats for at least a few days. (Face it, those hackers are fast workers.) And, you just might meet Natalie Portman in a match! (I read a graphic that said she plays CS.) Furthermore, it seems like girl gamers prefer consoles, so if you ever wanted to double-tap How does it measure up to the PC version? What sayest thou, GameSpy?

Contract J.A.C.K. GameSpy Review
[19:36:26 EST] by

No One Lives Forever and No One Lives Forever 2 incorporated enough in the way of intelligent A.I. and stealth play to arguably dub those games with the classification "tactical first-person shooter", but what does GameSpy have to say about the third title in the series, Contract J.A.C.K.?

Full Spectrum Warrior interview
[8:28:43 EST] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Xboxgamers.com posted a Full Spectrum Warrior interview with lead designer Laralyn McWilliams. Some insights: FSW is unlike anything else you've ever played. A count of weapons or a description of "special moves" doesn't apply to its game play style. Your team has set weapons that a light infantry team uses: all M4s except the automatic rifleman, who carries a SAW. In addition, the grenadier has the M203 grenade attachment on his M4. |

Chat w/Dev Team of Desert Combat

GameSpy Arcade just finished hosting a chat session with the development team of the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield: 1942. I managed to snag a transcript of it for all interested parties. (I still don't have BF:1942 installed, though I just picked it up. I gotta try this out! I read somewhere that this is the most popular mod since Counter-Strike. (And dare I utter this heresy? CS is actually pretty damn fun on a LAN, where at least 8 people are playing without cheats.)

*H&D2 review
[21:34:31 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Continuing with the review news, those little green men at GameSpy have put up a review of Illusion Softworks' WWII tac shooter, Hidden & Dangerous 2: The Game Without a Sub-title, but rated it only with 3 out of 5 stars. The review is written as a letter from your soldier back home. Here's a snip: Once my boys are outfitted, it's into the field with them. With top-secret technology, I can see the battle through any of their eyes, or guide them from a third-person perspective. I prefer the former. The commando I've selected can bark orders to his comrades if they're in earshot, or if they have visual range he can give them hand signals. Orders include directives on movement (follow me, freeze, take cover, and so on), firing (hold your fire, wait for my shot, fire when ready, etc.), and other commands. I can also jump "into" any of my operatives at any time, controlling them directly.[Update]: More reviews aô Gamezilla and GameZone. Gotta admit, the GameZilla review is dead on the mark. Call of Duty review
[21:03:32 EST] by
~~
Rushian
HomeLAN fed is the latest site to review Activision's Call of Duty, and not surprisingly, they rated it at 90%. Here's some juice: The single player campaign missions seem to be overall far more intense in Call of Duty than in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (the last PC game in EA's series which a lot of the folks at Infinity Ward worked on). EA may have put your character in the D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach in Normandy, France but Call of Duty has several such missions that are as intense in battle, if not more so, that Medal of Honor’s signature level experience. From the American army battle against the Nazi army to take a small French town to a British mission to retake a bridge to a Russian mission that attempts to take out Germans in a bombed out building, Call of Duty has a ton of memorable scenes that are not only fun to play and complete but you will also remember them for a while after you finish the single player game.Related News

*Chrome review
[20:55:31 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at Action Vault have posted a review of Techland's sci-fi tac shooter, Chrome. Here's a snip: Vehicles factor into Chrome as well, and they also aid in broadening the overall gameplay. Of those you can use at various times, the first one you encounter is an unarmed anti-gravity speeder. The most common is a dune buggy-like four-wheel utility vehicle with a weapon reminiscent of a mini-gun, having a high rate of fire but requiring a spin-up time. Not nearly as fast as either of these, the light walker carries a machinegun, while the heavy version late in the game also mounts a pair of rocket launchers. There's one mission that makes especially good use of the utility vehicle. With a professor you're trying to rescue at the wheel, you man the gun - it's also possible to drive and shoot - while trying to fight your way through a base full of enemies, twisting routes and dead ends.[Update]: Another review up at Gameguru Mania (74%) along with 85 (!!) screenshots. More Desert Combat Vids

~~
Uziyahu
Since Rushian enjoyed the Desert Combat Smacktards video so much, I decided to search for more DC videos. Be sure to download the video for DC v0.5 for something more serious. I'm afraid I'm going to have to break down and buy Battlefield: 1942 just to give Desert Combat some play. It sure looks like fun and the amount of work they've put into it shouldn't go unrewarded.

Desert Combat Smacktards Video

FilePlanet offers yet another video of action in Desert Combat, a mod for Battlefield: 1942. I haven't tried it yet, but every video I have downloaded has been stunning and has truly made the mod look like tons of fun, arcadish as it seems to be. Well, this one shows off some of the crazier aspects of Desert Combat's gameplay. Worth a few chuckles, definitely. (DivX, approx. 45 Megs)

FilePlanet is hosting a fairly new "Dawnville" demo for Call of Duty. I had lots of fun with the first demo, but this one causes my FPS to hit the floor using the same settings. *Call of Duty review
[18:01:52 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at ActionTrip have posted a review of Infinity Ward and Activision's WWII action shooter Call of Duty, and scored it at 93%. Gee Mikey, I guess they liked it. Here's a snip: Overall the game unfolded at a very good pace for me. I never lost interest, not for one second, and I was in awe of the action most of the way. No one can design a perfect game, and we're all quite aware of this, but whenever the action would lose a fraction of its steam the developers would come back with another epic battle scene that would make me go nuts over Call of Duty all over again.[Update]: Another quickie review is up at GNS Project (4/5) Related News |
