Another Project IGI review [19:20:11 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Tactical Planet that fansite ProjectIGI (not to be confused with out affiliate ProjectIGI.com) has posted a review of Innerloop's thinker-shooter, Project IGI where they give it a whopping 93%. Ok, the game's good, but not that good! Here's a snip:
There are many obstacles in the way in the missions you have to complete. Metal Gear-esque surveillance cameras can be disposed off either by shooting them (difficult if you don’t know where they are) or more preferably by hacking in to nearby computers and turning them off, manually. Also guards wait in towers observing the ground, and can be killed by sniping, or if you are really good climbing up the ladder and shooting them silently in the back of the head. You can get in and out of the bases in many cool ways either jumping fences, sliding down cables, climbing ladders or running through the front gate with a fully loaded AK47 screaming at the top of your voice “KGB THIS!!!!”
Uhh, I guess they liked it!

Two words tho: "grammar check" and wow, talk about bright colors..

Off Topic: Oni, Deus Ex and snow [18:30:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Having finished DF3 and Project IGI, I started looking for something else to play. After seeing many gaming sites proclaiming it 'Game of the Year', I first tried the Deux Ex demo, and even on my new system (P3-866/GeForce2/256MB RAM), the game was very laggy, even at 'only' 800x600x32. Just moving the mouse in the menus was sluggish (in-game). Aiming at enemies was even worse, and the scoped rifle had built-in drift which annoyed me as well. There might have been a cool game in there, but I couldn't get past the slow performance. (And yes, I did adjust the mouse speed, and I know it uses the Unreal engine and works better under glide, but with the system I have, I was expecting it to be playable, but it was not..)

I next tried Bungie's Oni demo, and had much better luck there. I ramped up all the gfx options to max, and set the screen res to 1024x768x32 (my 'minumum acceptable resoulution') and the performance was great. The game is a 3rd-person action adventure with an Anime art style, and lets you fight hand-to-hand or with weapons. It reminds me of an updated Fade to Black (even tho FTB had no hand-to-hand combat, but the overall style is pretty similar: the return of flat-shaded polygons..)

click me!
My fists are lethal weapons..
Note steam from the overhead vent.

I found it difficult to aim the weapons in 3rd-person view (so glad Spec Ops 1 had auto-aim..), so I stuck mostly with hand-to-hand combat, and had a total blast with it. It's a lot more satisfying to kick the crap out of someone up close than shoot them from 20 meters. You can run, crouch, slide, strafe, jump, flip, kick, punch, etc. The response to your mouse clicks and keyboard movements was pretty smooth, and the game allows multiple combos (punch punch kick for example) for stronger attacks. Besides the combat, the game is a pretty standard 'puzzle adventure' where you go room to room and use computer consoles to gain information on the unfolding story and unlock doors to new areas. You'll also avoid laser beams and turret guns, and of course kick a lot of ass along the way. I had a lot of fun with the 3-level demo, and I'm looking forward to the game, which should ship sometime in Feb 2001.

Other than that, I also got back into Metal Gear Solid for my second play thru it, complete with my unlimited ammo power-up for completing it the first time. Obviously, the game is much easier this time, (even without the unlimited ammo power-up), but I have found a few new places that I missed the first time around.

click me!
This could be bad..

While not really a 'tactical shooter' (neither was Oni, but hey, I do like other types of games ), I really do like the game. Like IGI, using stealth in MGS pays off, and it's not necessary to kill every bad guy you meet. Sometimes it's cooler to 'out-smart' them rather than just kill them. It's def a thinking man's game. And like Oni, there is hand-to-hand combat along with weapons. Great stuff.

On the weather front, we were just hit with a pretty major snow storm, and over 20" of snow fell here where I am in northern NJ in a 12-hour period. There are drifts that are up to my car windows! Looks like I'll have some work ahead of me digging out ..

Project IGI review [14:10:46 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from Blue's I see that Tech Extreme has posted a review of Innerloop's Project I.G.I from a 'normal' first-person shooter perspective, where natuarally, the game doesn't measure up. Here's a snip:
Thankfully, Innerloop did keep the controls simple and intuitive to use, even if they end up being too basic and limited. Agent Jones is able to pull off the standard first-person shooter moves arsenal, including running and walking, jumping, strafing, crouching, sliding down wires, etc. Yet, in a rather stupid move, you are required to hit the ‘Action’ button in order to make Jones climb unto stairs. [I think he means ladders - Rush] Once Jones is on a stair, the game switches over to a third-person perspective and you have to press your movement keys to make Jones climb up and down stars. It would have been much simpler to allow players to climb stairs just by running into them, just like every other shooter allows you to. To make matters worse, while climbing stairs, you are not able to shoot your weapons. Yes, this is realistic, but it gives a chance to the moronic AI to take some cheap shots at you while you are defenseless.
I don't think the reviewer 'got' the game at all.. About the only thing he liked was the weapon selection.

DF:LW review #215 [13:46:00 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The Electric Playground has put up a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where it scores a 7 out of 10. Here's a clip:
The third entry into the Delta Force series manages to outshine the previous titles but still proves that NovaLogic has quite a ways to go to match the excellence of RedStorm Entertainment’s Rainbow Six series. This latest addition has improved the visuals and graphics and once again players have an impressive arsenal – but once again the missions are all too similar and far too scripted.
Thanks Blue's.

DF:LW review [15:49:33 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
John K. from GameSpy sent word that they've posted a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where they give it a healthy 83% overall. Here's a bit on the game's sound:
I can't stress how excellent the sounds are. Everything from terrorists shouting in their mother language to combat sounds to even the finest footsteps in the snow are music to the ears. Land Warrior does an excellent job of immersing the player in the game.

Medal of Honor [PC] [18:29:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The new issue of PC Gamer magazine (Feb 2001) has announced Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, a WWII-themed, squad-based shooter that will use the QuakeIII engine. It's being developed by 2015, the developers of the SiN mission pack, and will be published by Electronic Arts.

Here's what Evil Avatar is reporting:
Aiming to out-Wolfenstein Gray Matter's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor boasts 24 WWII themed missions that will allow gamers to "make strategic assaults (both by yourself or as part of a crack military team), infiltrate enemy headquarters disguised as a Nazi, rescue POWs, drive tanks and other military vehicles, destroy enemy installations, and demolish historicaly accurate landmarks." Naturally, a Saving Private Ryan style assault on Omaha Beach mission will be included.
Sounds sweet to me. We'll see just how tactical is shapes up to be tho..

[Update]: Also in the Feb 2001 issue of PC Gamer is a small profile on H&D2, and a review of NovaLogic's DF:LW, where it scores a 78%.

IGI stuff [18:07:28 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There's another IGI review at X-treme Gaming Radio, where they smack it with a 2.5 out of 5 due to no game saves, poor AI, and no multiplayer (all valid concerns really..) Here's a snip:
You can, however, hack in and disable the cameras for 2 minutes at a time. You can pick locks, place explosives, silence alarms, and ride zip lines. Each of these takes time however, and you could be detected and killed. I'm glad Innerloop gave us these skills. It's better than just finding keys and switches. So far, I haven't seen many keys or switches that were crucial to my progress. Oh, and there haven't been any jumping puzzles either.
In other IGI news, and speaking of saves, there's a petition online to get Eidos to release a save-game patch for the game. Check it out if you feel the need to. Me, I'm on the last mission of the game, so I'm looking more towards a multiplayer upgrade or more missions.. Actually, an ex-pack that adds all 3 would be perfect, eh?

Site gremlins [15:45:08 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I dunno what was up with the site today. I think the web computer locked up somehow, and in doing that, corrupted the news database. Even after getting the server going again, the news wasn't showing up on the page at all. Even the script's 'rebuild' function didn't work. After smacking it with a bigger hammer, the script finally started working again. Whew..

IGI interview [17:01:36 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpy has put up an interview with Innerloop's Ole Marius Liabø, lead programmer on Project I.G.I., where they talk about all kinds of programmery things.

Project IGI interview

Here's a snip:
GameSpy: Every developer knows it's tough to make a game stand out with so many others being developed and released. What do you believe will make IGI grab a gamer's attention?

Ole: Yes, it's fantastic that so many good games are being released. The competition is getting harder and harder. IGI is easy to come into and is fun to play. The testers at Eidos still play it.

Site news [15:38:07 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Ha, 2 days after I nuke the 'site news' section, I actually have some site news to report.

Firstly, I tweaked the poll to allow viewing of the current poll results. I would have liked to get it into the current Poll cell, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Loading up in the main frame isn't a bad alternative tho.

And, for all you IE users (which, according to my stats, is most of you), the frames pages should now load correctly after hitting the main re-direct page if you grab IE 5.5 and IE service pack 1. This was definately a bug in the previous version of IE, but at least it's fixed now. I used the WinME 'Windows update' feature to grab the IE SvcPak.

Also for IE and NS6 users, I've tweaked the link & hover styles a bit to make the page look a bit better IMHO.

Project IGI reviews [2:56:26 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I was hit with some kind of 24-hr virus thingy, and after a night sleeping on the cold, hard bathroom floor (which was no fun, as you can imagine), I've now returned to the living.

So here's a quick run-down of the Project IGI reviews I missed:
bulletProject IGI review at XLGaming
bulletProject IGI review at GamePlay
bulletProject IGI review at GameSpot
bulletProject IGI review at Video Gamer Guy

Thanks to Blue's.

SWAT3 nabs tactical game of the year [19:25:27 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpy has awarded SWAT3: Elite Edition the 2000 Tactical Game of the Year, saying "so, if you're looking to play "cops and robbers" with a few kick ass computer opponents, or ready to test your tactical skills against others on the Net, update your copy of SWAT3 (it's free), or buy the complete Elite Edition package for some online carnage."

Congrats to Sierra on a really superb game.

RS map-making guide [16:56:34 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Pie's Tactics has posted a 3.8 MB file that contains a preliminary version of the 3D Studio Max Rogue Spear level building documentation, written by RSE's John Sonedecker. I guess this'll hold us over till the plug-ins are released..

IGI review #45 [15:29:34 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GamePro has popped up a real short review of Innerloop's Project IGI, where it scores a 4.5 out of 5 overall. Here's how they kick it off:
I’m Going In nicely straddles the line between Quake and Rainbow Six, putting you in the combat boots of a commando stalking a renegade Russian colonel who’s selling nuclear warheads. It’s not insanely realistic, but you have to be smart about how and when you attack—sniping and one-on-one engagements are the keys to success.

Rock the Vote! [1:46:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
As you may have noticed, I've nuked the "site news" section and replaced it with a poll option instead. Ever since installing the news script, there really hasn't been much need to tweak the site, so the site news section was kinda obsolete. But if you have any ideas for the site, don't hesitate to let me know about it via email.

Anyway, enjoy the new poll, and if you choose to vote, please answer seriously. Thx!

Another IGI review [20:30:59 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via our affiliate ProjectIGI.com that Online Game Review has posted (what else?) a highly enthusiastic review of InnerLoop's Project IGI / I'm Going In, where it scores a B+ overall. Here's how they interpreted the game's AI:
The AI (artificial intelligence) in Project IGI is near perfect. Smart and stupid, they vary on the difficulty settings. I DON'T recommend playing IGI on EASY. When the settings are on easy, the AI is extremely stupid. When shot at, the AI refuses to chase after you. This is typical of a easy mode setting in any game. Project IGI must be played on any level of difficulty besides EASY. You will enjoy the game 100% more with a little challenge. The AI responds to everything perfectly, once fired at, they either fire back (depending on the gun the AI character is holding) or they sound the alarm, which brings the whole base on your ass, or they notify their friends, who will chase after you.
The AI isn't perfect, but on the higher difficulty settings they do give you a challenge.. Perhaps the reviewers thinking the AI is too dumb are playing on easy.. It's so funny to see one review totally trash the game, and the next one call it a near-perfect FPS. Heh. Just goes to show ya, ya can't be all things to all people..

IGI review [20:09:39 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Daily Radar has posted a review on InnerLoop's I'm Going In, scoring it a 'miss', bemoaning the AI (which I agree with), the tedious levels, and poor gaphics (which I don't agree with at all..) Here's a snip:
What should or could have been a cool, sneaky shooter devolves into a series of tedious levels, severely aliased graphics and some of the stupidest, ugliest enemies we've seen this side of Delta Force: Land Warrior. While this game shares many of the same qualities of DF: Land Warrior, which we declared a Hit, IGI falls flat and failed to impress.
Ouch. It gets worse too.

I dunno tho, I think the game is really cool, and def worth getting if you follow the 'military shooter' genre and like cinematics (ala' MGS.) There's lots of fun to be had.. And hopefully InnerLoop/Eidos will release a multiplayer upgrade as Sierra did with SWAT3, and/or an expansion pack with some new levels.. I think IGI blows away DF3 in the single-player game (which is where I spend most of my playing time.)

DF:LW patch [19:50:41 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
NovaLogic has released a patch to upgrade DF:LW to version 1.00.25. Here's the list of changes/fixes:
Made some modifications to in-game sounds, including the commander screen sounds.

Tournament code added for future online events.

We have added some upgrades to the NovaWorld2 multiplayer connection system that should further increase stability when joining games that are almost full.

Not mentioned in a previous update, knife kills are now reflected correctly within NovaWorld player statistics.

User created missions should now save correctly.
Grab the full update or use the game's auto-updater to grab just the files you need.

Op Flashpoint MP server news [19:44:04 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I see via AndOne's awesome Operation Flashpoint site, ColdWar (hosted right here on SpecForce), that Codemasters has officially announced their multiplayer gaming service, "Codemasters Multiplayer Network" (CMN). The service will allow matchmaking and stat tracking. Head over to CW for the full scoop!

SWAT3: EE demo patch [19:39:40 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Sierra's released a 1 MB patch to upgrade the SWAT3: Elite Edition v1.0 demo that will be found on an upcoming Computer Gaming World CDROM to version 1.1 so that they can play against the retail version in multiplayer. The recently released SWAT3:EE web demo is already v1.1, so most of you won't need this patch.

Another Op Flashpoint preview [18:29:12 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Operation Flashpoint seems to be all the rage these days it seems. Up for today, PC Zone has posted a preview of Bohemia Interactive's game in progress, in typical British style. Here's a wicked quote on the game's AI:
"The AI is good," agrees Marek, modestly. "It allows all units to perform almost independently on the battlefield. I don't want to go into too much detail now, but the player can be subordinated to an AI leader or command his own AI soldiers. This requires a very solid AI background because the player actually sees all his units performing his orders alongside him. Either that or he's listening to the orders of his commander and having to make sense of the changing situations. In the multiplayer game, we had difficulties recognising who is AI and who is human."
I really hope they can pull it off. Release date is still scheduled for Q2 2001.

DF:LW review [18:02:45 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that TechExtreme has put up a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where they call it a 'keeper'.. Here's a small snip to get ya started:
Novalogic has done it again with the much-anticipated release of the third game in the Delta Force series, Delta Force: Land Warrior. Having already made my way through Delta Force 2 and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, I popped in the CD expecting a Delta Force 2-type movie, which portrayed a few guys moving around in the dark. Real thrilling. With that in mind, I was amazed at the graphic detail and fluidic motion of the movie that, while short, didn’t shy away from giving up some of the game’s best features.

We're back! (again!!) [17:49:45 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Ok, the DSL is fixed (it was the router afterall, just as I thought), and the web server is now again in my office at the original IP address, so things should now be working for everyone again. The ISP has put a re-director page at the temporary IP to forward back to this one, so no matter what IP is in your ISP's DNS, you should be able to reach the site. Whew!

I have also removed all the hard-coded URLs from the site, and made them all relative links so if I have to move the server in the future (and believe me, I hope never to have to do that again!!), all links will still work! Live and learn as they say..

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for stopping by.

Op Flashpoint shots [3:32:54 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys from SimActu (French sim site) sent word that they've posted 20 exclusive screenshots of Bohemia Interactive's upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint. Def give 'em a look..

Another Op Flashpoint interview [2:39:33 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Daily Radar has also posted an interview with Bohemia Interactive's Marek Spanel, producer of the upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint. Here's a bit on the game:
DR: What other RTS combat-strategy games do you compare yourselves to that are already on the market?

MS: On the one hand, there are squad action games like Delta Force or Rogue Spear. But, on the other hand, there are 3D RTS games like Ground Control. In Operation Flashpoint, you'll find the same action-packed gameplay as in other squad combat games, but it's adding strong commanding elements -- with up to 12 units in your squad -- you'll see a completely new experience. It's war and you're in it!
Nice!

DF:LW review [2:23:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
NeoSeeker has posted a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where is scores a rather generous 85%. Here's a snip on the game's sound:
Sound wise, Land Warrior packs a whopping punch. Whether it’s the loud boom of the .50-caliber sniper rifle or the popping sound of the M4, the sometimes surreal sound of intense gun battles enriches the atmosphere of Land Warrior and draws the player into the game. Jungles and swamps seem to be swarming with various creatures and insects making their own distinctive sounds. When all you can hear is the sound of crickets, you know it’s time to start watching your back for some sneaky terrorists hiding among the foliage.
DF3 is a good game, it was just too easy..

Operation Flashpoint interview [1:45:17 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
So new there's not even a link to it on their web site (as I post this ), SimHQ has conducted an interview with Marek Spanel from Bohemia Interactive, the company working on the highly-anticipated tactical shooter, Operation Flashpoint. Lots of great info in the interview, such as this bit on the mission editor:
I am a big fan of games that include a mission editor, and I understand yours is very detailed and powerful. Talk about the process of making a new mission with it.

Yes, the editor is very detailed and the best thing is that you can create good simple missions within a few minutes. First, you can enter units involved in the mission just by clicking on the map. You can organize units into squads and assign waypoints to them. You can create relationships between chains of waypoints of different squads (basically to tell one squad to wait for some other squad). You can insert some triggers as well to test condition for mission end or to do many other things. And the mission has only few kilobytes so you can store or exchange missions with your friends pretty easily.
The interview covers many, many topics, and includes lots of new screenshots. This one is def a must-read..

Project IGI demo review [18:19:28 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In other IGI news, 3DAction Planted has kicked up a review of the IGI demo, concluding it's a worthwhile download. Here's a snip from the article:
Counter-Strike fans looking for a good singleplayer experience will definitely want to give the Project IGI demo a good look. People who enjoyed Deus Ex's stealthy gunplay and computer hacking should also thoroughly enjoy this title. Hell, just about anyone into first person shooters will have a lot of fun.
I'm making my way thru the game now, and having loads of fun. I highly recommend it! This one isn't as disappointing as DF3; IGI def makes you think, and is much more challenging that DF3 was.

Project IGI review [18:07:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
BarrysWorld has posted a review of Innerloop's Project IGI, chock full of great screenshots and where it scores a 7 out of 10. Here's a clip:
Your player character is also affected quite heavily by the environment. Rounds from something like the AK47 will knock you back a few steps, and exploding fuel tankers will generally kill you, as will falling from a great height, so no jumping off buildings. Damage is calculated depending on the height you fall, so while jumping off say a one story building won`t kill you (unless you`re almost dead already), falling out of a watch tower (say through injudicious use of binoculars) will almost certainly mean you`re restarting the mission. Interaction with your environment varies depending on the situation you are in as well. Generally you play in First person mode, however when dealing with specific items such as ladders, rope slides (or crawls), unlocking doors or hacking computers the view switches to third person. Simple objects like buttons and fixed-emplacement machine guns still work in first person mode though.
This is a great review; def check it out.

More Op Flashpoint shots/preview [14:50:12 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw by way of our affiliate ColdWar that there's another Operation Flashpoint preview (in German) to hit the net. Here's a bit I managed to translate via BableFish:
The Motion Capturing makes itself clear in each phase. Whether the soldiers lie down, change weapons or mount vehicles. It is cleanly and liquid animated everything. We could be pointed, as extensive the steps for implementation to the play are and it are a great performance. Even the 1st person perspective is rich animated. One has really the feeling to move a heading. One can look at its body " at any time " and regard the internal messages. Nice is also the animation, if one is with several soldiers together-sat - or. Everything moves and nothing obtains the feeling, as if one would be " a computer figure ".
The preview contains a gallery of 27 new screenshots. Def check 'em out.

Another IGI review [6:01:01 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameOver has put up a review of Innerloop's Project IGI / I'm Going In, where it scores a 78% overall. The review also contains a bunch of great screenshots. Here's a snip on how the game plays:
The game, regardless of the limitations "realism" impose on you, is still fun. Sneaking around has always been my style of gaming (probably because I'm a huge coward) and this game has it in spades. Unlike Thief, however, you don't really try and avoid combat. Rather, you try and kill quietly and only isolated individuals. Running in guns blazing, in this game more than any other, will get you nowhere. The guns are all quite powerful and accurately model their real-life counterparts.
This is a great review and covers the game very accurately; give it a look.

Op Flashpoint preview [5:34:45 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at PC GamerWeb have posted a preview (with screenshots) of Bohemia Interactive's upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint. They had this to say about the gameplay and AI:
If stealing a vehicle makes it easy for you to complete your task, then feel free to do so. Maybe if you prefer, go for a swim to sneak up on the enemy or hide in some shrubbery so that the soldiers won't see you coming -- then you can take them out by surprise. Keep in mind, however, that while the missions provide great flexibility, the enemy AI is amazing. You will find out rather quickly that your foes will not respond the same way twice in a mission. They will ambush, perform organize attacks, and even investigate disturbances. This reminds me of Thief on steroids. The opposition will even perform patrol duty, to keep an eye out for your arrival.
Very cool indeed; check out the rest of the preview..

DF:LW review [0:41:09 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The Stratos Group has posted a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, giving it an overal 7.8/10 score. Here's a bit from the article:
The sniper rifle. That's all I have to say. For me, this is by far one of the most enjoyable weapons that a game can implement. I had a blast during the training mission trying to pick off my fellow soldiers while flying in on the helicopter. I thoroughly enjoyed picking off just about every piece of above-ground resistance from the top of an Egyptian pyramid. On top of that, the other weapons all seem to be dealt with in a realistic manner.

Project IGI review [22:56:26 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Daily Radar UK has popped up a review of Innerloop's stealth-shooter I'm Going In. Here's a clip:
This is not to say that IGI is an easy game. Realistic damage means that even the lowliest of opponents can kill you with a couple of well-placed shots. With no save points within missions this creates buzzing tension and really draws you into the game. While you can use the excellent targeting binoculars and live spy satellite feed to track guard movement, note camera positions and find direct routes to marked objectives, wider exploration of buildings will often turn up medical syringe boosters to restore precious health and alternative weapons and ammunition.
But wait, there's more.. check out the rest..

Operation Flashpoint preview [22:37:32 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Gamecenter has posted a preview of Bohemia Interactive's game in progress, Operation Flashpoint, and included some screenies as well. Here's a snip on the AI tactics:
The AI in the game will focus on individual units and their reactions. Operation Flashpoint will feature soldiers and other units that, unlike those in some other games, actually want to survive. And they'll do whatever they think is best, based on what's happening around them, to make sure they stay alive. In one mission, the player will have to destroy a rolling convoy. We found the convoy easily enough, and all the vehicles were in a nice, neat line--sitting ducks just waiting to die. When we opened fire, however, the convoy scattered wildly, with some trucks taking off down the road in a straight line as fast as possible, and others driving erratically trying to avoid incoming fire.
Sweet stuff..

Battlefield 1942 shots [22:27:48 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
MGON has posted a 'first impressions' article on Digital Illusion's upcoming 3D combat shooter, Battlefield: 1942. Here's a snip on the gameplay:
Finally, lets talk about the gameplay. As I keep saying team based play will feature heavily, with the usual attack/defend, CTF, and annihilation type gameplay. DICE will also be including things such as an all in Deathmatch mode, and a unique “ticket” system that will allow for re-enactment of large-scale battles, basically each team has a number of tickets (re-spawns) and they are used up as the players die. Of course in battles such as D-Day, the attacking allies would have many more tickets then the defending Germans, the Germans of course having the advantage of high ground and machine gun emplacements.
Two new screenshots are included as well. Check it out.

WE'RE BACK! [16:28:49 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Hiya! Glad to be back!

Sorry for the downtime, but the DSL connection from work (where the web box lives) to my ISP decided to stop working. In fact, it's still not working! It may or may not have been due to a power failure we had at work, but so far, no one knows for sure.

In any case, the web computer is now sitting in my ISP's office instead of mine. (Luckily, they were only 20 mins down the road..) The silver lining to all of this is that for now, I have a nice T1 connection, instead of my measly 192K/bps.

There are 3 different companies involved in all of this (my ISP, Covad, and Bell Atlantic/Verizon), and that of course means it takes 3 times longer to get anything done... So, for the time being, enjoy the extra bandwidth. Some links may be broken, but we're working on fixing them ASAP.

Thanks for stopping by... and don't worry, we're not going anywhere!

IGI feature part 2 [18:16:33 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at 3D Palette have put up part 2 of their featured look at Innerloop's I'm Going In, which is already out in Europe, and should be in stores in the US on Dec 14th according to my local EB store. Part 2 of the feature article takes a look at the characters in the game, and how they were designed and modeled.

IGI feature, part 2

Lots of screens and concept sketches go along with it. More is promised next week, so stay tuned. Good stuff to check out while we wait for the game to be released in the US.. (lol)

DF:LW interview [14:42:20 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted an interview with NovaLogic's Wes Eckhart, DF:LW's producer. Here's a sample question (and answer):
GSUK: Being able to drop and pick up primary weapons is great but why didn't you extend this to secondary arms and side arms?

WE: The Delta Force series has been evolving with every new game. Delta Force: Land Warrior gives players the ability to pick up dropped weapons from friendlies or enemies, which is a step forward. We decided to stick with the primary weapons for DFLW, because they generally tend to have the biggest firepower and longer ranges, which have more impact for the soldier in the game.
More great stuff in there as well; check it out.

IGI review / news [9:52:39 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Games Xtreme has posted a review of Innerloop's Project IGI. They have lots of good things to say about the game, including:
With enough ladders, rope-slides and tricks, IGI really excels in bringing to life the feeling of being alone in the enemy base. Take the cameras for instance, you reach a computer terminal and hit action, the whole thing is real time, so you have to keep [the] action [key] down, [the] 3rd person camera engages and shows you the time it takes to complete the task. You can again rotate the camera and look all around, useful for keeping an eye on things. Task completed, [and] you are informed the cameras are offline for 2 minutes or so.
Very cool indeed.

In other IGI news, according to our affiliate ProjectIGI.com, the game has indeed already shipped in the UK, and also has gone gold in the US, contrary to other reports from around the net. I've attempted to contact Eidos US a few times for clarification, but they never responded to my e-mail.

I'll be placing a call to my local geek shop to see if it's shipped in the US as well. Stay tuned..

Another SWAT3 review [14:35:50 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
SimHQ pointed me in the direction of a review of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, this time getting a 4.5 out of 5. Here's a snip from the conclusion:
SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle changed the face of the first-person tactical genre, and the Elite Edition polishes it to a near mirror shine. Sierra Studios is to be commended for making this add-on available free of charge to owners of the original game, something that many publishers may not have done. The thrill of multiplayer engagements coupled with plenty of other new material makes this a compelling package for both veteran and rookie SWAT team leaders. If you own SWAT 3, download the Elite Edition. If you missed it the first time around, pick up the Elite Edition standalone, and get down to some serving and protecting.

SWAT3:EE review [14:23:02 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PlayNow has posted a review of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, where it scores an 8 out of 10. Here's a snip on the gripping multiplayer:
What Elite Edition delivers is one of the better multiplayer experiences around, comparable to the likes of Rogue Spear and Counter-Strike for sheer tension. SWAT 3: EE achieves this intensity through placing you in believable environments with stunning graphics, matched with realistic weapon models. The result is a chilling perspective on what life would be like as a member of an L.A.P.D. SWAT team.

DF:LW review [13:39:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GamesFirst has slapped up a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior where it gets a 3 out of 5 stars. Here's a clip from the intro to start you off:
Land Warrior, the newest in the Delta Force line, has great potential, but to falls a bit short in the end. Delta Force: Land Warrior is a solid shooter. It’s fun to play and has decent graphics, but it is in no way going to bump the power house shooters from their pedestals. Delta Force fans everywhere will rejoice however, because it is a HUGE improvement over earlier DF games.
That pretty well covers it..

IGI feature [1:48:44 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via VE that 3D Palette has posted a multi-part feature on Innerloop's upcoming game I'm Goin In. Posted so far is an overview of the game, and an interview with Jolyon Leonard, a designer working on the game, plus artists Mikael Noguchi and Joachim Barrum. I had a bit of trouble viewing the feature in NS, so use IE.

IGI feature

Anyway, here's a sample question from the interview:
3D Palette: What would you compare Project IGI to in terms of recent games? For example: Deus Ex, Thief, Soldier of Fortune? What aspects of these games are you utilizing?

IGI: Probably a bit of everything, as it is quite different than what you have seen before, because of the huge landscapes. But, in comparison, we would say it's mostly similar to Golden Eye, but with a bit of Delta Force and Hidden & Dangerous.
Right up my alley baby! The interview has a nice assortment of pics to go along with it. Def check 'em out.

DFLW Update [0:55:33 EST] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
NovaLogic has released a new update for Delta Force:Land Warrior (1.00.24) which adds the following:
-Save game files should now transfer during updates.

-Player will no longer be able to disable scope drift and weapon recoil during NovaWorld multiplayer games.

-Vehicle explosions have been modified to cause damage only during their initial explosion.

-Knife statistics are now correctly recorded on NovaWorld 2 character tracking records.

-The knife range radius was somewhat reduced for the CQB character-type.

-A new "Terrain Geometry" feature has been added. The default for this feature is "Normal". By turning Terrain Geometry to "High", players will be able to increase the level of detail of the terrain at the expense of potentially slower game performance. Increased terrain detail will be most noticeable when looking at the level of detail of distant terrain.

-We have made modifications to correct problems that some players were having with the scope feature. These problems were related to certain video card chipsets.

-The multiplayer host setup now allows players to set the number of kills from 1 to 500. Anything below 1 or above 500 is set to Infinite.

-New “metal footstep”, "promotion", and "statserver message" sounds have been added to the game.

-A number of minor mission fixes have been implemented.

SWAT3: EE patches coming [23:17:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Pie from 10 David sent word of some upcoming patches for Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition. Here's what he sent:
Some of the complaints about the recently released SWAT 3: Elite Edition upgrade have revolved around, among other things, the cap of five players per multiplayer game. It looks like this is about to be solved (along with some other issues) in two upcoming patches for Elite Edition. Rod Fung, SWAT 3 lead producer, had this to say in an email on Monday:

"10-players addition as well as other new features will be coming soon. It will be called patch version 2.0. It's currently in QA and will be available after Christmas.

In the meantime, a new patch will be coming in about a week called version 1.7. This version fixes the multiplayer enter and exits (keeping player in the same room after a game). Also allows all versions of the game (localized and North America) to play with each other.

Final news is the demo for the game should be out in a week as well."
Good news for SWAT3 fans..

DFLW review [23:11:38 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Tactical Arena has put up review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where they give it a 4.5 out of 5 'arcs'. The review has some nice screenshots to go along with it. Here's a clip from the article:
Possibly the best news in ages is the ability to save games at any point. Because the new maps are large, much time would be required to clear the area. Should you get killed at the end and not receive credit and progress, you'll have to start all over again and tedium quickly sets in. Thankfully, this feature is now in and works well when you're not sure if you're planning on a frontal assault or a sneaky back-door approach.

Another IGI demo review [22:34:42 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In yet more IGI news, Tactical Gaming has put up a review of the recently released IGI demo, claiming it worthy of a download (of which I agree..)

Here's a snip on the gameplay:
The game is semi-realistic, a cross between Counter-Strike and Rainbow Six meaning you don’t die by one shoot, but it does hurt! So you have to move carefully and plan your moves. If not, you probably die faster than you think! When it comes to planning you’re equipped with a portable radar-tracker. From here you can zoom in and out, and watch the guards patrol routes and where the security cams are placed.

IGI interview [22:08:45 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Cutting the Edge has put up an interview with Innerloop's Johan Overbye, 3D graphics programmer. The 19 question interview covers many aspects of the upcoming game, I'm Going In. Here's a sample:
In the demo I was surprised to see that when climbing up/down ladders that the view switched to 3rd person. What's the thinking behind this madness?

As you perform actions such as climb a ladder, climb a fence, hack a computer etc, the camera switches to third person. This has several purposes. The most important one is that we can allow you to look around in all directions to scout for enemies. Second, it allows us to clearly illustrate what the player is doing - when you hack a computer for instance, Jones will tap the keys. Last, but not least, it allows us to give the main character of the game a face and a personality.
Def a good read; check out the rest.

DF3 review [17:10:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at Happy Puppy have posted a review of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior, where it scores a 9 out of 10. Here's how they conclude:
What makes this game worthwhile is this: it is simply a lot of fun to play. Multiplayer is smooth, frantic, and fun, and you can always find a game on Novaworld. Voice Over Net also ups the ante, and along with the sheer size of the levels, beats the competition hands down. If you enjoyed either Delta Force I or II, you'll like this game as well. It is more of the same, with some gameplay, graphic, and multiplayer improvements.
