Ghost Recon review [18:20:27 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks over at Simulation News have posted a review of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, developed by Redstorm and published by UbiSoft. Did they like it? Here's how they sum up:
Ghost Recon is a top-quality squad based tactical shooter and it really does break the bad habits we’ve seen in its predecessors. The graphics are great, the sound is exceptional and multiplayer has a list of fun features longer than Santa’s master list, assuming you have the computer power needed to run it. I think it is safe to say that anyone who has been a fan of the previous Tom Clancy games should love this title, but those who crave the more dynamic AI over other features may be better off with something else.

GR review [5:19:50 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Fragland has put up a review of Redstorm & UbiSoft's tactical shooter, Ghost Recon, where it scores an 85.5% overall.

GR review

Here's a clip:
The single player part of the game has some nice edges; you can take control of each character at any time but you can also have them giving you cover while you start doing most of the killing.

When you're not in control of a character, he'll follow you whereever you go but that can sometimes be a pain in the ass. They don't always understand that you turn around and want to go the other way so they'll just stand there in your way. Of course they're not complete idiots so if you're under fire; you'll hear them shooting at the enemy and even kill one from time to time while you're busy doing other "important stuff".
Thanks Voodoo Extreme.

OFP nabs GOTY [15:58:06 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpy has awarded Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint: Coldwar Crisis Action Game of the Year! Here's a bit on what they said about it:
Operation Flashpoint put everything into one finely produced package, and is one of the few action games we're still having a blast with months after its release. It was a surprise hit, and one we were only too happy about.
I wouldn't really call OFP an action game, but ah well. Yes, there's 'action', but there's much more to it than that..

Notably, it beat out Undying, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Max Payne (any of those easily qualifying as 'action' in my book..)

GR intreview [3:15:00 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In more GR news, Gamer's Pulse has posted a short interview with Redstorm's Darren Chukitus, where they discuss Ghost Recon. Here's a little bit to start you off:
If you could change any part of the finished game, what would it be and why?

Bugs. Hate 'em. The development team holds some control over these, but not all. We never ever want to see a bug in the final game. Unfortunately, there isn't a game made that doesn't have them. Again, these are usually due to time constraints. I think we did a good job of catching what we could for Ghost Recon.

Ghost Recon review [2:53:03 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks over at SimHQ have put up an in-depth, and rather critical review of Tom's Clancy's Ghost Recon.

GR review

Here's a clip:
For me, RSE has always set their products apart from the other tactical shooters by having the best game play. They weren’t the first to make a TFPS but they did it better then everyone else. They made little tweaks to their play for each release to keep ahead of the pack but from the day Rainbow Six was released they never had much in the way of serious competition. The only other game that brought new things to the table was when Sierra released their SWAT based game.
Interesting read; check it out.

MoH preview [17:48:50 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
LoneGamers has put up a preview of my most anticipated title, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Here's how they kick it off:
Recently released demos have sparked interest in 2015's biggest development project ever, Medal of Honour: Allied Assault. Who better to publish it than the big boys, EA Games? I played the multiplayer demo for hours and started to get a feel for the World War II action which MOH: AA is bringing to your desktop (or maybe Mac?) and I am definitely liking what I see. It is yet another one of those games that are trying to simulate a World War and this is the one that I have taken the most liking too.
I concur.. Playing the demo maps really gets me excited for the full game.. Can't wait!

C&C: Renegade interview [17:30:21 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Action Trip have posted an interview with Westwood's Dan Cermak, lead designer for Renegade, the company's FPS based on the C&C universe.

Renegade interview

Here's a bit on the MP aspect of the game:
AT: Those that know me know I'm a multiplayer NUT. The more the merrier. What's the lowdown on the multiplayer modes

DC: Our multiplay mode is "Command & Conquer Mode." It is a team-based mode where two teams of players (GDI and Nod) fight to destroy each other's base. Each building in a base has a specific function and affect if it is destroyed. For example, destroying the GDI barracks denies GDI access to advanced character classes. There is also a functioning economy. Credits are gained through destroying enemy characters, vehicles and building as well as Tiberium harvesting. Players can use those credits to buy new character classes, and vehicles. There are 28 characters, 23 weapons and 11 vehicles available in C&C Mode.
Release date is still slated for Feb 2002.

In "The Hunt" the Allies must find the Flak 88 cannon and destroy it. The Axis, of course, will be guarding it closely.
Mirrors can be found at 3D Gamers and TechIMO. Thanks Blue's News.

Op Flashpoint post mortem [20:10:14 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Gamasutra has posted a post mortem on Bohemia Interactive's smash hit, Operation Flashpoint: Coldwar Crisis. Here's a clip:
Ironic as it is, we have to start What Went Wrong exactly where we left off with What Went Right. Despite some of the usefulness the extra development time offered us, in the end th cycle was probably too long, and in optimal conditions would have been at least 20 percent shorter. It may have been possible to shorten the cycle, but we experienced various external events or internal missteps that prevented us from accomplishing that.

First of all, some technologies in the game were a bit outdated after more than four years. We didn't know at the outset that the game would be still in development after so long, and we hadn't left time at the end to rework parts of the engine. Some of the criticism of Operation Flashpoint addresses the amount of detail in the textures and some models -- and we have to admit that these could have been better.
These are always a fascinating read, so def check it out..

Deadly Dozen review [2:12:30 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
After a lull in DD reviews, Gamezilla has posted a review of nFusion Interactive's WWII-themed squad shooter, Deadly Dozen, and awarded it a solid 72%.

DD review

Here's a clip:
Each mission isn?t really related to the next and you don?t carry anything to the next level (health, weapons, and items). The plot loosely ties each level together as you plod along towards some objective of killing lots of bad guys and blowing up lots of stuff. There is always the War theme in the background and it contains missions based on reality, such as finding the Enigma on a U-boat (a la the movie U-571) or the ?Battle of the Bulge.?
Thanks Blue's News..

SoF 2 intelligence report [22:31:04 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Action Vault has posted an 'intelligence report' on Raven's upcoming shooter, Soldier of Fortune 2. Here's a bit on the weapons & equipment the game will have:
All weapons are modeled after realistic ones as documented in Jane's Guide to Weapons. There are said to be 14 in total, not including 10 different grenade types. Adding more diversity is the fact that most guns have multiple modes of fire. Weapons will not carry any manufacturer labels, instead using military designations such as the M203 grenade launcher, AK-74 and US Socom pistol. Some forms of firepower will be capable of penetrating certain objects including doors and windows. ... There will also be a tool kit which has multiple uses like lock picking and cutting trip wires, while holding equipment such as night goggles.
The game is set for release in Q1 2002.

Virtual BattleField Systems announced [22:14:57 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Codemasters has announced that a special version of Operation Flashpoint will be used by the military for training. Here's some of the PR:
Operation Flashpoint to be used as a training tool by the United States Marine Corps. Codemasters today confirms that the United States Marine Corps is to use a special combat training application based upon Operation Flashpoint (PC), its chart-topping military simulation game.

This special version of the Operation Flashpoint Technology is called VBS1 (Virtual BattleField Systems) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) will utilise the application beginning December 2001. Other military organisations are also looking at Operation Flashpoint technology variants for training purposes.

Although the modified version of Operation Flashpoint will not be available to the public and part of the content will remain strictly confidential, certain developments and units will possibly be made available at some later stage through additions or upgrades to Operation Flashpoint owners around the world.
Check out the official VBS website here.

Renegade preview [21:55:16 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has posted an in-depth preview of C&C: Renegade, Westwood's quasi-military shooter. Here's a snip:
Destroying an enemy base takes serious firepower. You start off as a basic soldier with an automatic rifle, so you're going to want to spend your hard-earned credits on something that packs a bigger punch. It takes a short while to accumulate enough credits to buy anything, but you can spend that time defending your base or hiking over to the enemy base and scoring a couple of frags. Once the cash starts rolling in, you're going to find different things to purchase, depending on the role you want to fill.
Expected release date is February 2002.

MoH:AA bits [18:09:13 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
For those that grabbed the DM demo of Medal of Honor, Allied Assault.net has found a way to play Team DM with it. Use the following commandline (or add it to the shortcut):

MOHAANetDemo.exe +set developer "1" +set ui_console 1 +set g_gametype 2 +sv_maxclients 16 +map dm/mohdm6

Allied Assault.net also has word of how to get a bit better throughput as well, so head on over for that.

In other MoH news, GameSpy has posted a preview of the game, with some nice snaps to go along with it. Here's a bit of what they liked:
We were most impressed with the Snowy Park and Algiers levels. The former features lots of precipitation and fog, which was visually remarkable and had an adverse affect on the gameplay. The latter was a big stylistic change from the European levels, with unique architecture and a sparkling Northern African sky.
Tho not a fan of straight-up DM, I did like the demo.. The map was a bit small, but the weapons were nice. Can't wait for the full game.

IGI2 preview [1:16:23 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PC.IGN has posted a preview of Innerloop's upcoming sneaker-shooter, IGI2: Covert Strike.

IGI2 preview

We already know about the improved AI, so here's a clip on the gfx engine:
Graphically the game looks much more solid than it did before as well. The expansive outdoor environments that were so prevalent and impressive in IGI will be joined by some pretty impressively large city expanses as well for what looks to be the makings of some intense city fighting. The color pallette is a little wider and brighter than I remember from the first game and textures have a more detailed feel to them.
Looking better all the time.. Release date is set for May 2002.

MoH demo details [20:55:58 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
VE received some more details on the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault demo that is to be released this friday. Here's the news:
The demo level will be a Free-for-All deathmatch in the war-torn cityscape of Stalingrad. This is a level where standing in the open will get you killed in a hurry. While not the wide-open landscape of Omaha Beach, this level has some intense building-to-building fighting. We had a 20-player deathmatch going here on Friday and it was insane.

There will be 6 character models available, 3 Allied and 3 Axis. You can play as Manon from Medal of Honor Underground, U.S. Airborne, and U.S. Regular Army on the Allied side. As part of the Axis force, you can play as an Afrika Corps Private, a Wehrmacht soldier, and a Panzer tank commander.

All of the weapons will be available in the demo including the Browning Automatic Rifle, Thompson sub machine gun, MP40, Panzerfaust and bazooka.

There is also a mounted MG-42 that players can man, however, without a buddy; you ARE vulnerable to sniper fire.
Sounds killer!

MoH:AA Video Preview [23:56:12 EST] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
GameSpot has a video preview on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (Windows Media and Real Video). The video demonstrates parts of the multiplayer and single player of the game. Run time is around 5 minutes and shows tons of new stuff.

There is no mention of Co-Op play. I remember hearing the game would ship with some Co-Op missions. Guess we will have to wait for H&D 2 for WWII co-op action.

Moh:AA demo release [2:15:23 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)

IGI2 preview [16:27:05 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The little green men at GameSpy have posted a preview of Innerloop's upcoming stealth-shooter IGI2: Covert Strike.

IGI2 preview

Here's a clip on the improved AI:
You'll notice quite a big improvement in the AI in IGI 2. For example, the AI units will be more aware of motion in the game. If you walk slowly through a dark area they might not notice, but if you run through the same area, they might notice and thus react." What about fallen comrades? "The AI troops will react if they see something strange," explains Solari, "they will call out to other guards and gather around the area where the body was found. In this build you can see the enemy soldiers flanking us. Once they zero in on your position, they will figure out the best way to catch you."
Improved AI and in-game saves should go a long way to make IGI2 a better game than IGI was..

Thanks Blue's News.

After The Wall game [20:14:33 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I received some email from the guys over at Flash/Thunder Productions, where they're working on After the Wall. Here's the PR:
After the Wall is a game made with the Torque Game Engine and is based on World War 2.

AtW will feature large outdoor terrain as well as small countryside villages. Rivers and bridges, hills and valleys, all play an important role in accomplishing the missions.

Team play is a vital part of the game. Without the cover and support of your teammates you will not last long. The game emphasizes on squads working together to obtain smaller goals, all adding up to the teams victory.

Every time a player dies, he will have to wait for other teammates to die. He will not re-enter the game until there's enough players to form a full squad, which will for most parts consists of 4 players. These squads will spawn together and should then stay and work together as a team to achieve the objectives that will win them the battle. Other than these 4 man infantry squads, there are also panzer squads (2-3 player), snipers and fighter pilots.

AtW will feature authentic WWII weapons ranging from bolt-action rifles for the precision minded player to spray and pray action machineguns. Hand grenades, mines and antitank weapons like bazooka, Panzerfaust and flamethrowers. Also tanks, vehicles and fighter planes will be a part of the game. All of which are fully controllable.

AtW will for the initial release concentrate on the Americans vs. the Germans. Later other nation will be added for specific maps.

The game will feature 4 different game types.
Sounds sweet so far. Check out the in-game shots and renders.. Looks promising, and ya can't have too many WW2 games..

SoF 2 preview [16:43:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
CVG has posted a quickie preview of Raven's upcoming military shooter, Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix. Here's a clip:
These stealth elements have allowed Raven to go to town with the detail. In most first-person shooters you can crouch, but in SoF2 you can get on your belly, crawl though long grass and see it part in front of you. As well as that, every surface you walk over makes a different noise, plus you get a sound gauge that lets you know how loud you are -- and guards react to that. Make too much noise early on and an entire platoon of terrorists will be on your tail.
They seemed to really like the gore element tho, as that's practically all they talked about..

MoH:AA Movie [11:24:45 EST] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
Those crazy guys over at Spelletjes Garnaal have released a Metal of Honor: Allied Assault movie. The movie is around 6 mins (9 MBs) of game play on a never before seen level. You MUST download it. The gameplay is amazing!! Best of all the game will be released next month.

MoH:AA is getting help from Dale Dye. He was the military adviser for such films as Platoon and Saving Private Ryan. This gameplay clip clearly shows the developers are listening to his suggestions. I cant wait for this game.

Thanks Blues

IGI 2 will offer intense team based multiplayer action. Encompassing an immersive storyline spanning across China, Russia and Libya, IGI 2 delivers a thinking-gamer’s first-person shooter.

As you might know IGI:2 was picked up by Codemasters (same publisher behind Operation Flashpoint)

While looking through Sunday's newspaper I spotted that Circuit City has Deadly Dozen for only $9.00! Too good of a deal to pass up. If you like Hidden & Dangerous you can not go wrong with Deadly Dozen.

Also, CompUSA has Commandos 2 for $19. Another great WWII game. It took me a few days to learn how to play Commandos 2, but well worth the time invested. It very much like H&D but from a top perspective. Co-Op simply kicks butt!!

Outbreak review [21:02:40 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has slapped up a review of GSC GameWorld's Codename: Outbreak, and slap it they did with a 5.4 / 10 overall. Here's a bit of the conclusion:
About the best thing that can be said about Codename: Outbreak is that it comes with a suggested retail price that's less than that of most new games. It does have four multiplayer options that let up to 16 players compete against each other at once, and one of those options is a cooperative mode, a feature that more first-person shooters should adopt.
I dunno, I liked the game. There was one mission in a foggy swamp that had some seriously awesome firefights. Not being able to see into the fog was pretty intense..
