Battlefield Vietnam shots
[14:55:31 EST] by

Rushian
In more shot news, I saw via Blue's News that EA Games has posted some new screenshots from Battlefield Vietnam.. They look so good that they could be renders.. And is it just me, or do they look a lot like Novalogic's upcoming "Battlefield 1942-killer", Joint Operations? (Even tho they're different theaters... Still tho, jungle warfare is all the rage now..) Related News

DF:BHD - Team Sabre review
[10:51:44 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Game Over, which does some of the best reviews in the business, has posted a review of Novalogic's DF:BHD ex-pack, Team Sabre, and scored it at 68% overall. Here's a whiff: Team Sabre splits its dozen missions into two stories: the overthrow of a drug cartel in Columbia (a la Clear and Present Danger) and the extermination of a rebel group in Iran attempting to disrupt oil production. With the dozen missions split more or less evenly, the story is over almost as soon as it’s begun, and you’re probably looking at ten hours or so of playtime max. The Iran missions are pretty easy, a few haywire scripted events aside, as long as you advance methodically and don’t rush blithely into vast enemy forces. The drug cartel story takes place in, naturally enough, jungle, loaded to the treetops with snipers who are all dead shots, and is very, very frustrating.Related News

Joint Ops previews, pt 3 & 4
[1:46:22 EST] by

Rushian
Missed this yesterday with all the other news, but C&VG has posted day 3 of their focus on NovaLogic's Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. This installment talks about the sound and video production of the game. Here's a snip: Tell us about the process of recording the weaponry in the game.Part four is also online, which interviews NL president Lee Milligan, where they discuss NL's marketing plans. Excerpt: With Joint Operations you're consciously moving away from Delta Force - how does that fit in, in terms of your long-term plans? We've been told it's the first part of possibly three or four games in total - do you see it on a par with Delta Force or taking over from that brand?Be sure to also check out the media that goes along with each article, like sound clips and of course screenshots. PRISM: Black Shield website launches

Rushian
This is certainly the busiest news day in quite some time.. There's a new tac shooter on the horizon, entitled PRISM: Black Shield, which will follow in America's Army 's bootsteps by being developed by Rival Interactive (Real War) in cooperation with the US Military's Army National Guard (ARNG). Here's the 411: Rival Interactive is creating a high-end, 3D, first person shooter game based on homeland defense called “Prism: Black Shield” for the Army National Guard (ARNG). The ARNG seeks to create a commercial quality game that is both entertaining and graphically rich. The game will be distributed as a recruitment tool and for increasing the awareness of the Army National Guard. In the game, players will use futuristic US military weapons, equipment and technology as part of a secret new team to combat terrorists on US soil. Players will battle individually or in teams against the game’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) terrorists and react to a wide range of homeland terrorism scenarios. While I don't get taken in by all the hype, ya can never have too many tac shooters.

Men of Valor: Vietnam preview
[13:29:59 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Another Men of Valor: Vietnam preview is up at Action Trip, with their typical wit. Here's a snip: Objectives may change at any time, so listening to the dialogue between squad members is one of the key elements ensuring your survival during massive assault missions. We also know that 2015 is working hard on pushing teammate AI routines to their limit. You can be sure your comrades will be of great help when intense firefights commence. You can expect them to provide suppressing fire, but also take the time to find cover and patch up their own wounds before heading back into the fray. Hostiles, on the other hand, will respond in their own manner. In addition to quick and forceful melee attacks, foes also have the ability to hurl grenades back at you, challenging players every step of the way.Sounds like it'll be a fun one.. Related News

*Conflict Desert Storm 2 reviews
[13:08:32 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I don't normally post console news, but there is also a PC version of the game that is virtually identical. Anyway, GameOver has posted a review of the Gamecube version of Pivotal Games' Conflict Desert Storm 2: Back to Baghdad, scoring it at 70% overall. Here's some of it: The game starts before the Gulf War even begins. Special operations forces are dropped in to lay down the groundwork by eliminating SAM sites, neutralizing communication centers and disarming SCUD missile launchers and warheads. Because you’re behind enemy lines, support will come in the form of helicopter rocket attacks (you can paint targets using a laser designator) or the odd tank or APC. For the most part, though, you’ll be gunning it alone. Alone might not be the exact term I would use as you duke it out alongside four team members: a rifleman, a heavy machine gun expert, a demolitions man and a sniper.Lots of nice screenshots are included too (and don't worry, the PC versions are much higher quality.) [Update]: There's another review [PC] of the game up at Strategy Informer, where the game scores 62% overall. Related News

Vietcong: Fist Alpha
[12:48:47 EST] by
~~
Rushian
PC.ign is the latest site to post a review of Pterodon & Illusion Softworks' Vietnam-era shooter, Vietcong: Fist Alpha, scoring it at 77% overall. Here's how they kick it off: Vietcong: Fist Alpha isn't exactly the biggest or best expansion pack ever to grace store shelves. That said, it does add on some new features and more action that fans of the original game will be sure to eat up. The new additions include five new weapons like the M14 and Scorpion, new multiplayer options including the new Turn Table mode, and a brand new campaign which has some great moments and some mind blowingly frustrating moments that follow a different main character across several new missions. Even with some gameplay problems and relative brevity of the campaign, Fist Alpha is still an acceptable expansion to one of the more interesting shooters of last year, especially at the lower $20 price tag.Related News

I haven't made mention of this game yet, but it seems up our alley. Kuma Reality Games has re-launched their Kuma War website with a new trailer and expanded details on the first two missions in the game. There's also a beta demo you can download if you're a subscriber of FilePlanet. The game, which is subscription based, will let you game real-world operations soon after they happen. Here's the background concept: Kuma Reality Games builds re-creations of real-world events using advanced gaming tools. Kuma\War, the first Kuma Reality Game, is a first and third-person tactical squad-based game that provides multiple updates monthly to the consumer's computer to reflect unfolding events in the real world. Each month Kuma\War subscribers will receive playable missions, video news shows, extensive intelligence gathered from news sources around the world, and insight from a decorated team of military veterans.MP even includes co-op, which is a nice touch. We'll have to see how this game turns out.. [Update]: There's a preview of the game over at HomeLAN Fed, based on the beta build.

Lightning-fast site EDBIS is hosting the Soldner 'Physik Demo'. Here's the 411: "Download the test environment with the link above and unzip it (Winzip needed). Just start it and you see two windows: one with a vector landscape display and one with the camera settings. You can control the vehicle with cursor keys. In case you topple over the vehicle or fall down the landscape simply press W to reset the vehicle. Some simple objects are standing around which you can collide with and which behave physically. In this test environment we are testing the physics engine. The code is identical to Söldner (i.e. the DLL which contains the engine), only the display is done with a vector display as we need to show debug lines and variables."Not much to look at really (wireframe rendering), but I guess it'll let you get an idea of the kind of physics the game will have... The folks over at C&VG have posted a preview of Novalogic's large-scale MP shooter, Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. Here's some of the goods: But while similar in principle this is no mere Battlefield clone; and with BF: Vietnam waiting in the wings, it clearly can't afford to be. *Site stuff
[17:48:35 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I've been doing lots of work on the site over the last few weeks (so much so, that I haven't gamed once in over two weeks!) The biggest change is that I've added a chat script to the site. I took the basic script and more than doubled it's size with new features (see the 'about' doc once you're in chat for the full list). I still have many more ideas for features I'd like to add to it, so it'll be an on-going project. If you run 1152x864 or higher screen res, you'll see the chat output in the left frame at the bottom. All users can see the chat output at the bottom of the main page, after all the news. If you're not in chat, the chat window(s) will update every 10 seconds; in chat, they update at near real-time. Click the * SpecForce chat link to access the chat. I had to redesign the left frame menu area to fit in the new chat window. Some things were moved around and some page elements are dropped if you are viewing the lo-res version of the site ('extra' gfx, and the calendar I recently added was moved above the release dates). To see the site the way I intended it, you really need 1152x864 res or higher if at all possible. I also finally got around to making a new poll topic, so be sure to vote today! I tweaked the "Murphy's Laws of Combat" output a bit as well. It'll now print which number saying is displayed out of the total number on file. I added about 50 more sayings as well. I also tweaked the table border colors (poll & release dates), so other than minor font size rendering differences, the site is identical on all browsers now (well, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, & Opera.) And lastly, long-time fan of the site, Maverick, joins us as our new newsie. Welcome aboard Mav! Oh, I renewed the domain for 2 more years too, so I'll be around for awhile yet! As always, thanks for stopping by!

Shadow Ops preview

~~
Rushian
Gaming site 1Up has posted a preview of developer Zombie Studios and publisher Atari's upcoming XBox (and PC) tactical shooter, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. Here's the obligatory snip: Even though Shadow Ops is still early (it just went alpha, so a lot of tweaking and bugfixing remains to be done), it already plays like a very well-polished production. The graphics look lovely throughout, but that's not worth noting -- you can tell that easily enough from the screenshot gallery above. What you can't see is just how frenetic some missions are -- you'll hear radio chatter almost constantly as rocket-propelled grenades explode and chunks of buildings fall apart all over you.I'm hoping for good things from this title as I'm quite the Zombie fanboy Related News

I've been seeing news on this one for awhile, and it seems to be up our alley, so with that, I noticed via Blue's News that HomeLAN Fed has posted a preview of developer Khaeon and publisher Playlogic's 3rd person sci-fi tactical shooter, Alpha Black Zero, which uses the Serious Sam engine. This looks like it's for us: The player team AI is impressive as well with team members covering, crouching, and shooting as a team without any aid of any commands. However you can control if you want via simple keyboard commands to halt, regroup, fire and more. While we didn’t get a chance to check out this aspect of the game, Alpha Black Zero will have a full multiplayer co-op mode for the entire 17 missions of the full game. This one promises co-op too, but we'll see if it's still in the game when it ships.

Söldner Previews
[23:35:18 EST] by
~~
Maverick
GamersHell has posted a preview of Wings Simulation's up-coming tactical vehicular shooter, Söldner. Here's an excerpt: Söldner: Secret Wars is a highly anticipated 3rd/1st Person view wargame (similar in genre to Operation Flashpoint), that features over 60 weapons (FAMAS, 557, G36C, M4A1, just to give you a few names...) and over 70 vehicles (including helicopters, jets, VTOL, tanks, jeeps, APCs and so forth). With such a variety, there may be a reason to delete BF1942 / Desert Combat from our computers, and especially since there's a destructible environment engine implemented for all us destructive people. Also noteworthy, is 1UP's preview which can be found here. Heres a tidbit shedding light on just how enormous the game world is: It's hard to quantify exactly how freaking large these maps are, but if you boldly attempted to walk from one end to the other like a complete idiot (though I don't believe an end actually exists) you'll find yourself dying prematurely in real-life. Once starvation sets in and its decided that leaving the computer to eat is best, go ahead and rest a biblically sized book atop the "W" key to force your character to walk endlessly forward in your stead.Related News |

Rushian
Missed this before, but ActionTrip has posted a review of Pterodon Studio's Vietcong ex-pack, Fist Alpha where is scores a solid 70%. Here's a bit on what's new in the game: The biggest improvement I've seen in terms of gameplay is the way the enemy soldiers react during gunfights. They appear a lot more successful in finding cover, flanking, and reacting naturally to your presence when you meet them head on in close-quarters combat. (They try to spray you with a shower of bullets - just like they should.) Another area in which Fist Alpha showed improvement is the positional audio, which is now damn-nearly perfect. In more VC news, it seems Pterodon is working on a followup to the game as well, according to a news item on the Pterodon website. *BF Vietnam preview
[6:45:03 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GameBiz.au has posted a preview of EA & DICE's followup to BF: 1942, Battlefield Vietnam. Here's a snip: Graphically Battlefield Vietnam is going to be vastly different to Battlefield in the original there was open land, deserts and some trees. Vietnam is filled with dense, harsh nasty jungles, small rivers, lush bushes and swamp with a great deal of greenery described by the EA development team as "overgrowth and undergrowth". The jungles will also have various temples, huts, military bases and bridges. The Vietnam jungle was harsh and unforgiving and that is shown within the game, the jungle, grass and other flora are certainly dense and intrusive enough to give the proper perspective. The environment is presented in such way there is going to be a lot of sniping, stalking, ambushes and guerrilla warfare. ~~
Rushian
The folks at 3D Avenue have put up a review of Novalogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - Team Sabre, which clocks in at 76% overall. Snippage: Despite the annoyances though, Team Sabre is still just as fun as BHD was. If you love a bit of action then Team Sabre will provide it - exploding cars every which way, high speed boat and car pursuits with mounted machine guns galore, high paced close quarter combat; it's all here. As mentioned earlier, this is not really a Raven Shield alternative. Rushian
ActionTrip has posted a preview of Namco's PC-port of their military action shooter, kill.switch, which is being handled by UK-based developer Bitmap Brothers. Here's a clip: Your character has a few neat tricks up his sleeve, while slipping through enemy formations (after all, you are a slick and skillful military operative). Almost any environment can be used to your advantage. Since foes often attack in groups, players have the opportunity to hide behind walls, crates, pillars, etc. Such tactics are likely to be useful on many occasions. One of the most impressive feats we've seen was the character's ability to duck behind obstacles and fire at enemies without looking. Our hero simply stretches his arms above the obstacle and fires a rain of bullets into his adversaries.Probably not all that tactical, but it looks like it'll be a fun romp. Several new screenshots are included with the article. Related News

Far Cry MP preview
[4:28:12 EST] by
~~
Rushian
EDBIS has posted a second Far Cry preview, based on some time with the multi-player beta version of the game. Here's a bit on the MP aspect: A lot better already is the Assault gametype, because the gameplay is much more suitable for this. One team tries to complete an objective (placing explosives, flicking switches, the usual stuff) while the defending team does its best to prevent this. The use of stationary cannons and vehicles gives it the edge over deathmatch. I didn’t get to see the gametype’s full potential yet, but I imagine that if two good teams get a shot at it, it could be very exciting.Related News

GameGuru Mania is the latest site to post a quickie review of Novalogic's expansion pack to Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, Team Sabre and scored it 73% overall. Excerpt: The multiplayer portion of the game won't disappoint you. Team Sabre adds 30 new multiplayer maps (most of them drawn from the single-player campaign) playable in 7 different multiplayer modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Attack and Defend, Search and Destroy, King of the Hill and Team King of the Hill) and up to 50 players on a server at a time. The new maps are heavy with trees and offer plenty of areas to hide. You will also be able to join NovaWorld games as an SAS character. The review seems more of an excuse to post lots of screenshots. (82 if you're counting..) [Update]: There's another review over at PC Arena, where it scores 3.5 out of 5. (Thanks Blue's News.) Related News |
