Police storm Milosevic home [6:40:47 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In some real world tactical action, CNN is reporting that there is a standoff with police after they attempted to arrest former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic at his home.

Standoff after police storm Milosevic

Here's a bit of what went down:
The standoff began earlier in the night after police rammed the gates in a white van. Carrying military assault rifles, police jumped out of the vehicle and shouted at journalists to get out of the way. Two more vans followed, carrying more of the hooded police inside.

Concussion grenade flashes and gunfire enveloped the villa grounds. Smoke was seen rising into the air. Some of the special forces smashed through windows as riot police held Milosevic supporters outside the gates.
Scary stuff. Check out the full article, and be sure to also check out the video of the ops team in action.

Pivotal Games web site [2:16:51 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Pivotal Games has launched their new website. Why should you care? Well, they're the studio working on the Spec Ops 2 look-alike, Conflict: Desert Storm. (Ok, I think I'll stop now with the comparisons to SO2.. )

Conflict Desert Storm website

Anyway, here's a snip on how they describe the game:
Conflict: Desert Storm places you right in the middle of the action. It makes you the star of your very own war movie as you lead your Special Forces team against the Iraqi Republican Guard. You have the whole Gulf War to live through. [All 101 hours of it?! - Rush] Jets roar overhead, tanks race past you, and helicopter gunships shoot up enemy positions.

The world of Conflict: Desert Storm is vibrant and real.
Snoop around for a few more screenshots and info on the game. Lookin' good, real good.. Damn! I feel like playing Spec Ops now, after looking at the screenshots!

BI open letter [1:25:42 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ColdWar Flashpoint has posted an open letter from Bohemia Interactive regarding some recent issues surrounding Operation Flashpoint, such as hacking of the demo, and how the retail game will differ. Here's a snip:
First of all, we would like to ensure you the Demo has revealed only very small fraction of the game. You have tasted some nifty things that will be present in Operation Flashpoint, but the full game is bringing you much, much more than the Demo could with any add-ons or user made missions.

Prepare yourselves for over forty high quality missions linked to create intriguing campaign from Cold War era with authentic storyline and strong characters and test your combat skills with additional ten instantly available single missions.
Good things are def on the way from this title..

Another OFP preview [21:55:11 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has posted a preview of Bohemia Interactive's upcoming game, Operation Flashpoint: ColdWar Crisis.

OFP preview

Here's a bit from the article:
Becoming familiar with other actions can be crucial to survival in Operation Flashpoint. Many secondary actions are available through a small menu that lets you shoulder or switch between weapons, pick up items like extra ammunition, and enter various vehicles. For example, if you come across the dead body of a solider who was carrying a bazooka, you have the option to pick it up, but you can still hold on to your primary weapon and just place the bazooka on your back. Unfortunately, the same doesn't apply to rifles, so you have to decide whether you want to keep the weapon you have or pick up an AK-47 instead.
Lots of cool screen shots are also included. Check 'em out.

PC Gamer articles [19:07:41 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The new (May 2001) issue of PC Gamer has a few interesting articles in it for us.

First up, there's mention of what Zombie's been working on since Spec Ops 2. They've been working on a first-person action title for Disney Studios, entitled Atlantis that ties in with the upcoming Disney movie of the same name. Zombie beat out 3 other developers for the project. The game will use the LithTech engine, and is rated "E", so it won't be a hard core game, but a more mass-market one. Release date is June 2001.

Next up is word on Soldier of Fortune 2, being worked on by Raven Software, and using the Quake III engine. The game will use real-world weapons exclusively, and the over-the-top weapon damage models of the first game will be toned down. The game will still have lots of gore tho, if that's your thing (it's not mine..) The new game will allow you to ride in helicopters and armored personal carriers in some of the levels as well. The missions seem pretty intersting, such as infiltrating terrorist strongholds in Cambodia, or fighting it out on an oil tanker, ala Metal Gear Solid 2. Other missions take place in airports or hospitals. You will also be part of a team on some missions, and will have to follow orders. If you try to go off on your own, Rambo-style, you'll be shot. Interesting. There will be stealth missions as well. The game will be single-player only out of the box, with perhaps a MP add-on available later on. In thinking about it, SoF2 looks to be a lot like Project IGI, but with more blood. We'll see.. Release is set for "Winter 2001".

Third, they have a small preview of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint, where they describe it as "Delta Force meets Rogue Spear". Not much new info, as the article was just a recap of a multiplayer gaming session. They liked the weapons and vehicles, and the size of the levels tho.. Release date as we know is May 2001.

And lastly, they have a preview of Counter Strike-killer, Global Operations from Barking Dog studios. Missions in this game take place in real-world locations such as Belfast Ireland or Sri Lanka, and you play as one of the two forces involved in the conflict, such as the IRA or the British Army in the Belfast scenario. (Tho the names will be changed in order to get the game onto store shelves in the UK.. Ah the pitfalls of being reality-based. ) There's lots of good things in this one, such as the realistic weapons, team-based mission-oriented play (VIP detail, territorial control, sabotage, etc), pre-planning ala Rainbow Six, bullets that can penetrate wood or plaster, and more.. Looks like it's got all the right pieces.. The game uses the LithTech engine and is due for release "Summer 2001".

It's def a good time to be a reality-based FPS gamer. I gotta admit, I wasn't looking at SoF2 or Global Ops all that seriously, but I'll have to check them out a bit closer now..

Team Factor interview [17:49:54 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Schlapphut Entertainment has posted a small interview with Pavel Sinagl from 7fx, the team working on the online tactical game, Team Factor. Here's a clip:
SE: What sets TF apart from other shooters like Counter-Strike is the RPG-element. Can you explain this a little bit more?

PS: Every specialization have its own setup and selection of skills to pick and cultivate. This may enable to build unique character perfectly fitting the players way of play and fight.
A few new screen shots are included.

BI on OFP demo [20:07:47 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw over at Coldwar Flashpoint that one of the development team from Bohemia Interactive, has posted his comments on the OFP demo and the subsequent hacking of it. Here's the rip:
The Demo as released is in my opinion TOO feature rich. Its NOT a "Demo" in the normal sense, its nearly a "Late" full feature beta minus a few items.

This demo was Downloaded over 1 MILLION times so far.. That is incredible for a military sim..

Releasing a MP version of this demo will do nothing more that cause some potential buyers who are not the hard core shooter types to simply continue to play the demo (which we all know can be edited to keep it fresh with new missions) and not buy the boxed game. The true game nuts are going to buy it, (like me) but, with the number of Demo DLs so high, a statistially SIGNIFIGANT number of those borderline buyers will be lost. Thats lost revenue that would otherwise help insure future development and more succes for this development team..and thats someting Id like to see happen.

The game isnt too far off...people have pety to keep them bz working themselves into a lather. [eh?! - Rush] Dont give us multiplyer support...make us buy it
Umm, I don't agree with this at all.. A single demo mission (albeit a very cool one), is hardly "TOO feature rich". And they're acting like it's our fault (the enthusiastic OFP community) that the demo was too easily hackable, and therefore keeps the casual gamer from buying the final game. I don't see it..

Plus, there is a huge segment of the gaming market that plays MP exclusively, so BI/Codemasters is just doing themselves a disservice by not releasing a MP demo of the game. Many of those gamers are just going to pass over the game if they can't see exactly how the game plays in MP.

[UPDATE]: Correction: the above quote was not from a member of Bohemia Interactive, but was from the BI forums. I misread the original post. Whoops!

H&D 2 preview [22:26:07 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from a few days ago, ActionTrip has posted a preview of Illusion Softworks' upcoming game, Hidden & Dangerous 2, which is still set for a Q4 2001 release.

HD2 preview

Here's a snip to start you off:
As for the multiplayer mode, the general assumption is that there should be about eight game mods (classic death-match, ctf, king of the hill, escort…), and that the players will be able to set a large number of parameters on their own. The multiplayer mode should feature five exclusively multiplayer maps, plus all single-player maps. The programmers are trying to make the game support up to 20 players per game, and they are currently considering a possibility to introduce multi-person campaigns.
Hmm, not the best article..

Police Tactical Training review [8:06:03 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's pointed me in the way of a review of the budget title Police Tactical Training, where it scores a 58%.

Police Tactical Training review

Here's a snip:
The most enjoyable (and challenging) are the sniper sequences. You've got to stay zoomed out so you can see where the targets pop up, and then zoom in again to see if they've got a weapon (some of the criminal and civilian targets deliberately look a lot a like). Then you shoot, or not. You have five rounds in that rifle, so you need to quickly reload while a friendly target is up. It's nerve-wracking, which is probably what a real police exam feels like. Later exams add extra frills, like using night vision.

OFP preview [7:55:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There's an Operation Flashpoint preview over at Avault, with several screenshots included in the article.

OFP preview

Here's a snip on commanding your troops:
Live long enough, and you'll get to command your own group of men willing to live and die by your orders -- a heavy responsibility, to be sure. Faced with this kind of task, it's important that you learn to properly manage your men, carefully balancing the necessities of your present situation against your newfound strategic capabilities. Your orders reflect this tactical flexibility, as you're given a broad swath of control over your crew; while you're capable of ordering them to move to target locations or to attack something or someone of your choice, there's much more to it. For instance, you'll soon discover that formations can play a crucial role within a given mission: whether it's a column, staggered column, wedge, vee, line, or echelon, each has its place in the field. You're also able to set your soldiers' ready states, telling them to hold fire, to engage at will, and so forth; you can even request that they keep an eye open for hostiles, or to report on their exact coordinates.
More good stuff in there as well; def give it a look.

Venom shots [18:11:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There are 8 new shots of GSC GameWorld's Venom over at Russian site Triada Games.

new Venom shots

You get to see a new type of weapon in some of these shots. Also on the page are 7 shots previously posted that I haven't seen yet (they look to be taken from the demo tho..)

I def have to admit, I'm liking this game.. If you haven't yet tried the demo, def give it a look. Sure the game is sci-fi based, but it looks to have a pretty nice engine, and I rather like the fact that it's just you and a single buddy. Ha, how will I ever survive OFP controlling 10-12 men!

Thanks Blue's News.

IGI strat guide [14:52:05 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Still playing Project I.G.I? If so, GameSpot UK has posted a strategy guide to help you get thru the game. Here's some sample advice:
What's the best way to get an idea of the problems associated with each task?

Don't be in too much of a hurry. Make full use of your equipment (satellite map and binoculars). You will need to develop a feel for how much time you have e.g. to get from point A to point B before patrolling guards or a camera spots you and sets off an alarm.
Makes sense to me. Check out the rest!

BF 1942 Q&A [14:02:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Computer and Video Games has posted a Q&A with Ola Holmdahl from Digital Illusions CE, the developer working on Battlefield: 1942. Here's a snip, of course:
CVG: You've described this as a "WWII experience". What does this mean? Is there a storyline as such, or are you simply offering people the chance to play as a variety of different combatants from different sides?

Ola Holmdahl: "The game places the player into the heart of WWII action. You can fight as an American, German, Russian, Japanese or British soldier. It'll feature many of the weapons and vehicles used in the war, all of which are player operable, as well as most of the historical battles in the European, Asian and African theatres. The game will see the player through the expanse of the war, from its absolute peak to the bitter end."

More OFP demo missions [20:35:01 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
A few more OFP demo missions have been released by the OFP community.

Find the first two over at the Operation Flashpoint.com missions page. One is a redo of the previous Real Ambush II mission, but this time you can play as the Soviets. The second is called Light Storm, where you're a recon team and have to clear a village.

Three more can be found here, 2 being sniper missions at either day or night, and another where you must defend Alpha Platon at all coast.

Ha, can't wait for the game to be released where people can use the included mission editor.. This game should keep us busy for awhile.

New OFP demo mission [3:52:02 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Scoping out AndOne's OFP fansite ColdWar Flashpoint I see news of a new (hacked) mission for the OFP demo.

[pic removed]

Seems like it's got potential, and hey, it gives us something new to play till the full game gets released. Head on over for all the goods..

Site news [1:03:44 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I've been busy working on the site a bit. First up, you may have noticed the little counter below the recon pic.. Being the stat freak that I am, I wanted to see how many hits the recon pic was getting. No biggie. I may try to code up something in Perl to clean it up a bit and just print the number without the text and all the zeros.

I also fixed the poll, which stopped working awhile ago. It's about time for a new topic, but I haven't been able to think of a good one. If ya have a suggestion e-mail me or post it in the comments section.

Last, and best of all, I've ditched the old forums and installed a nice new modern version of UBB version 6. No messages or users could be converted over, so its a clean slate at the moment. Let's see if we can get things rolling in there again!

As always, thanks for stopping by.

More OFP goodies [2:11:54 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Again from Coldwar Flashpoint I see news of a way to make the demo load a bit quicker by skipping all the logos and info screens before the game starts. Here's the rip:
* Create a shortcut of the demo to the desktop or anywhere you want it to be.
* Right click on the shortcut and select Properties
* Add this line to the end of the Target box "-nosplash"
OK the changes and there ya go!

Venom interview [19:25:31 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Speaking on Venom, JeuxScoop has posted an interview with Sergey Zabaryansky, lead programmer of the game. Here's a clip:
Kled'12 : Which games gives you inspiration in Venom creation ?

Sergey : There are so many games, movies and books which influenced our artworks and code that I am in a difficulty to answer these questions. Probably Duke, Counter-Strike, Delta Force, Hidden & Dangerous, Rainbow Six, Half Life have been more of influence on Venom than other games.

We tried to follow the best technical and scenario decisions existing nowadays and introduce something new.
I played a bit more of the demo last night, which featured an interior mission, so the game is a mix of indoor and outdoor combat. The game is still a bit rough around the edges, but def has promise.

OFP demo review [16:58:09 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The boys at Action Trip have posted a review of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint demo which was recently released.

OFP demo review

Here's a bit on what they think about the game:
First rule during an infantry charge is to stay low, and keep a respectable distance from your squadmates, so that a hand grenade doesn't take out half of the unit. Advancing your position is all about spotting "him" before he spots you, and praying to god that some stray bullet doesn't have your name written all over it. Infantry charges are usually like that -- you have to keep communicating all the time (Bohemia did a great job there with introducing the radio messages you receive during action - they'll tell you the enemies' position, status of your soldiers), and doing the ol' prone and sprint to the next appropriate cover exercise. Oh, and spotting an enemy from a 150m away is a bitch in real life, so don't expect it to be any easier in Op. Flashpoint. The game makes you rely heavily on radio coms. and instructions from your squad leader. Some people might find that irritating, but this is actually in the spirit of the general 'realism happy' design.
Indded, the game is very immersive..

More OFP demo hacks [3:17:24 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)

OFP demo review [21:42:50 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
IntelGamer has posted a review of the recently-released Operation Flashpoint demo where it gets a 95% overall rating.

OFP demo review

Here's the mandatory snip for ya:
Communication and teamwork are the only ways to stay alive and kicking during a mission. Members of your squad will report in everything that happens to them, from a close encounter with a enemy to their exact location when they are in need of support. With up to a 12 man platoon, their is never any radio silence.
Check out the screenshots in the article as well.

IGI review [21:21:16 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's News pointed me in the direction of yet another review of Innerloop's Project IGI, this time over at The Dragon Network, where they score it at an 80%. Here's a clip:
Project: IGI fits into the same vein as the Delta Force games except that it takes them a step further. The first thing anyone will notice about this game is the incredible realism of it. One shot to the head will kill any enemy in most games, but in IGI, a headshot will kill you too. Bullets will rip through most walls as if they weren’t even there causing devastating damage to anyone on the other side. Ricochets can and will come straight back at you causing injury and even death. Grenades, rockets, and other explosions create huge damage zones meaning that if you want to live you had best be far away when they go off.

Venom shots & info [20:11:46 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There may be a new tacical shooter on the horizon called Venom which is being developed by GSC GameWorld. They're still looking for a publisher, so no release date is known.

The game takes place in the near-future (in the year 2034), so some of the weapons are sci-fi based, but it does have 'standard' weapons like a sniper rifle, shotgun, grenade launcher, mines, etc. The game also harkens back to the days of Zombie's Spec Ops 1, where you travel thru the levels with a buddy who provides overwatch and cover fire. The levels also take place in the great outdoors, which is always good.

In any case, the official Venom site has been updated with new screenshots of the game in action, and I'm def impressed.

Venon shots

Be sure to check out the rest of the Venom page for links to previews of the game (where it gets compared to DF3), and a playable demo. I played the demo (in 2D in fact cuz it doesn't like Dx8, so I had to play it in a window on my desktop, so the performance was a bit slow..) and I def liked what I saw. When you use the sniper scope to zoom in on a target, you can also hear what they're saying via a directional mic. So nice to hear them gurgle when they get shot too! Wait till ya see your buddy whip out cammo netting for concealment when he goes prone! Slick!

The first demo mission has you making your way thru the woods, taking out guards and tanks, guys in towers, crossing bridges and more forests, and finally taking out bunkers, and securing nukes, so it's all good. Def give it a look!

Not really new, but if you haven't yet seen the shots from Conflict: Desert Storm, check 'em out at GameSpot.

Spec Ops 2, er, wait!

Here's the rip on what they posted, which is all we really know about the game so far:
London-based publisher SCi Entertainment Group has announced that it will publish a tactical-action game based on the Gulf War sometime next year. The game is titled Conflict: Desert Storm, and it will give players the chance to take part in the 1991 war against Iraq. It is currently in development at Pivotal Games, a UK-based developer formerly known as Pumpkin Studios, which developed the 1999 3D strategy game Warzone 2100.

Though little is known about Conflict: Desert Storm at this time, the screenshots that have been released show off some detailed character models in several 3D environments. The game will also feature several types of equipment and vehicles, including helicopters, fighter jets, and SAM sites. We'll have more information about the game as it becomes available.

Conflict: Desert Storm is scheduled for release sometime in 2002.
Gotta admit, I'm interested in this one..

New SWAT3 map [18:36:52 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
A new map for SWAT3 has been released (3.44 MB) and is available over at 10-David. Its a hostage rescue map, and features 'sniper support'.
Notice that this mission has "Sniper Support". Which means that you can select a separate entry port to place the blue team in a sniper-position. In this mission it's in a helicopter outside the building.
Sounds interesting, head on over to grab it.

Medal of Honor Q&A [0:12:50 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Fansite Allied Assault has posted an edited Q & A with 2015, the folks working on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, taken from their forums. Here's a sample:
Q: I saw on the Voodooextreme forum that you can only play co-op on 2 levels, and I think that's pretty stupid. Why not make the WHOLE game co-op-able or at least more than 2 levels? Your thoughts on this one if you will.

elmagoo: As for co-oping the whole game, that's not as easy as it sounds. There's a lot of care that has to go into making a game fully co-opable (in all aspects from level design to code). There are many issues that have to get thought out and solved (such as if one player dies, do you just let them infinately respawn like in Quake 1 so there's no real meaning to trying to stay alive, or do you give them some kind of harsh penalty so there's more value on trying to stay alive). Plus the gameplay and level flow have to be designed from the ground up with co-op in mind. There are certain styles of levels in the game that just won't work well for co-op (such as when you infiltrate under the guise of a German uniform, you can't really have several players all walking around in disguise).
Seems easy enuf to me. If ya die, you're out. H&D did it easily..

OFP news galore [23:35:29 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Lot's of Operation Flshpoint news to report.

The biggest news is that Codemasters has officially announced that the demo for OFP will be released this Wednesday, March 21st at 9:30 GMT!

Next up, welcome to new OFP site Operation Flashpoint.com, who starts things off with a bang with an interview with Bohemia Interactive's Marek Spanel, the game's producer. Here's a clip from the Q&A:
Helza: Can you tell us anything about the different types of Multiplayer Games that will be available?

Marek: It's depending on the mission. Any multiplayer game is mission based and possible types of missions covers almost every type of multiplayer: starting from co-operative missions to larger and more tactical combat of larger squad. Some people like capture the flag variants as well and sure you can play simple death match games. You can use built in mission editor to create your own multiplayer missions as well.
Also, Codemasters has released a shot of the game box.

Good things are def on the horizon..

Project IGI review [18:47:15 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also via Blue's I see that The Wargamer has put up an in-depth review of Innerloop/Eidos' Project I.G.I..

IGI r3eview #912

Here's a snip on the game's AI:
Perhaps the biggest shortcoming of Project IGI, is the AI or artificial intelligence. Since the game has no multi-player component, the AI is crucial to the success of the campaign missions and thus the game. And although the AI is not bad enough to ruin play, it does a good job of dragging the game through the mud.

To put it bluntly, the AI in this game is unimpressive. As long as guards are not aware of Jones' presence, they'll keep to themselves, walking along their programmed route. Once they do become aware of the trespasser, they'll either drop to their knees and start firing or more likely make a mad dash for Jones. And like other games with poor AI, their accuracy is ridiculously good. While the AI is a step above the original Spec Ops and Delta Force, that's not much accolade when one considers those games are nearly three years old. Recent tactical shooters have made significant steps in their AI, with SWAT 3 leading the pack.
Well said..

DF:LW stat tracker update [18:18:04 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's News that Land-Warrior has word of an update to the DFOptiStat program, bringing it up to version v1.0B. Several bugs were fixed and some new features added:
- export of Total Kills stats
- possibility of using filters on the export (by using these filters you can export just your own personal stats or your squad's stats by simply typing in part of your name or tag)
Head over to FlagBall.com to grab it. The also have word on a DF2 version of the program for you DF2 players..

NATO 3.5 released [17:13:10 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I noticed via SimHQ that NATO v3.5 has been released for RedStorm's RS: Urban Ops. In case you forget what the NATO mod does, here's the goods:
-This MOD adds 17 primary weapons, 7 secondary weapons, and 6 special items to NATO 3 (or an additional 61 primary, 24 secondary, and 6 special weapons if you are starting with UO).
-Sounds, Bitmaps, Textures, and 3D Models have been improved.
-Gameplay mechanics have been tweaked regarding armor protection, ammo loadouts, and weapon characteristics.
-As a bonus, multi-player missions have been included (ala NATO 2).
-NATO 3.5 is stand alone, and does not require the installation of NATO 3.0. If you already have NATO 3.0 installed, NATO 3.5 will overwrite it.
-The installer will automatically detect where RS/UO is installed without your intervention. Thus, there should be no problems if your game is not installed in the default directory.
-The online NATO 3 Manual has been updated for NATO 3.5. The manual is a great resource, including full weapon and item descriptions, as well as tips and hints.
Def a worthwhile mod..

SWAT3 user maps [17:00:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
SWAT3 fan site 10-David has word on 3 new user-created maps in development: The Bank Heist map I mentioned previously from Grandmas7er, a Desert Raid map by Smirnoff, and a Passenger Train mission by Thai Phan. All 3 sound really great. Head over for screenshots and more details.

While over at 10-David, be sure check out their "Tip of the Day" section which reveals some of the tricks to the recently-released Abandoned level created by Sierra. As a side note, I've played that level, and is it just me, or is it a bit easy with just one tango to kill?

MoH interviews x2 [16:42:46 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Two Medal of Honor: Allied Assault interviews have popped up from around the net.

First up is an interview with 2015's President, Tom Kudirka over at MSXbox where they talk mostly about the X-Box version, but do cover some PC topics as well. Here's a sample Q & A:
MSXbox: Will the game contain multiplayer capabilities on the Xbox, or will it be primarily a single player game? If multiplayer is planned, will gamers playing on the Xbox version be able to compete with players on the PC?

2015: We are focusing on making an excellent single player experience. We're also including a multiplayer component, and we think everyone will be quite pleased with the plans we have. At this time, there are no plans to support competition between the versions.
The second interview is with Vince Zampella, 2015's Producer, over at EvilAvatar. Here's a snip from that one:
Stormbringer: Is the focus of the game on the single player experience or is it balanced between single and multiplayer.

Vince Zampella: The main focus is to make an awesome single player experience and we are spending a great deal of time to polish the game. We want players to feel like they are part of the world they are interacting with, and come away with a better understanding of what the war might have been like. We are also including a multiplayer component, and we think some of the plans we have will be quite enjoyable.

SWAT3 modder interview [13:08:00 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Drunk from SWAT3 Retreat sent word that they've put up an interview with Grandmas7er, the creator of the Nakasaki (previously Nakatomi) map for Sierra's SWAT3. Here's a snip from the article:
Drunk: How long did it take you to develop and test Nakatomi/Nakasaki?

Grandmas7er: Hmm.. so many people have asked this from me, but it is really hard to give any exact numbers. I started Nakatomi sometime during spring 2000 and it was ment for Soldier of Fortune. It was very early stage and I got bored with it and left it alone for months until I downloaded Swat3 Development Tools and found out that hey, I can load good ol' Nakatomi to WorldCraft.
There's also word of a new map he's working on, loosely based on the North Hollywood bank heist back in '97 plus 4 screenshots.

GameSpot has updated their Operation Flashpoint movies page. They've got 5 movies online to check out.

H&D 2 shots [18:41:19 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Italian gaming site Multiplayer.it has posted 2 new shots of Illusion SoftWorks' game-in-progress, Hidden and Dangerous 2.

They've also got a link to a zip file with 5 high-res H&D2 shots (9 MB).

[UPDATE]: The unofficial Hidden and Dangerous 2 website has posted a detailed description of the shots. Head on over to see what they think.

OFP preview [0:08:31 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameRush (no relation ) has posted a preview of Bohemia Interactive's large-scale tactical combat game, Operation Flashpoint, which will be published by Codemasters.

OFP preview

Here's a snip on the ground fighting:
To get a real taste of combat on the ground one of the missions involves flushing out the Soviet troops from what looks like a deserted village. The mission starts with the whole platoon driving through the countryside on the back of a truck and then being dropped off close the village. As the platoon disembarked everyone spread out and the AI squad leader issued commands to the rest of the platoon. It was at this point you realise how much work has been out into the game's AI. Every member of the platoon got on with their job in an intelligent fashion, in fact the only member that was running round like a headless chicken was me.

New SWAT3:EE map [19:48:29 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
SWAT3 fan site 10-David posted word of a new SWAT3: Elite Edition map created by Sierra called Abandoned, which looks like it was inspired by The Matrix. Def looks like a must-have. Head on over to 10-David for the goods.

BF:1942 preview [19:32:56 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
MGON (which looks like it must be a GameSpot affiliate..) has posted a first impressions article after a visit to the Digital Illusions CE (DICE) studios.

BF1942 preview

Here's a snip on the terrain:
And now I go back to mentioning the maps, I’ve said they can be huge, and highly detailed. The aim of the developers being to simulate the battlefields in France, and to create the hilly islands of the pacific… Given the detail that is going into the shipping maps most people would assume that player constructed maps would be difficult. Fear not mappers of the world. The guys at DICE demonstrated the real time mapping tool they use to create their own levels, and told me that a shinier version of the same tool would ship with the final product.
Be sure to check out the pics at the end of the article; damn fine stuff.

IGI review #841 [18:18:11 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's News pointed me in the direction of yet another Project IGI review over at Gaming Chronicle, where they spank it with a 3/10 score. Yowsa! They liked the game's engine, but little else. Here's a little snip for ya:
Even the most basic aspects of the game have been made overly complicated for IGI. The developers have generously given you the ability to look around corners, a characteristic first introduced by Redstorm with Rogue Spear. However, the difference here is that you cannot peek AND fire at the same time. Not only that, but it’s a two-button combination used for you to peek so your finger must go off the trigger for a second. Needless to say, I never used this function at all while trying to complete my missions.
Not a bad read actually. They didn't like the game, but they didn't just trash it either..

DF:LW stat tracker [19:12:39 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Land-Warrior.com that a new utility has been released to track your stats during Delta Force: Land Warrior play. Here's a bit on what it can do:
When you use DFOptiStat to run Delta Force Land Warrior, it will import the scores after each map into it's own database and you will be able to create HTML pages for:
- Ranking by number of total kills
- Ranking by number of total flags
- Ranking by seconds of total zonetime
- Ranking by total targets destroyed
- Ranking by best ratio in 1 game (kills per death)
- Top 10 for all the above

Medal of Honor fact sheet [11:30:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Stomped has posted a Medal of Honor: Allied Assault fact sheet. Here's how they kick it off:
In Medal of Honor Allied Assault from Electronic Arts, players will assume the role of Lt. Mike Powell, member of the famed 1st Ranger Battalion who gets recruited by the OSS and battles through over 20 levels that are based on historical military campaigns of World War II.

Set during the most trying years of the war, 1942-1945, Medal of Honor Allied Assault gives players a sense of the courage it took to survive the landings at Normandy, the assault at Arzew, a rendezvous with the Resistance outside the village of St. Lo, and the push through the heavily defended border of Germany itself to take the bridge at Remagen.
MoH is slated for a Fall 2001 release.

H&D2 movie [18:10:23 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Czech gaming site BonusWeb has posted a movie (1.3 MB in DivX AVI format) of Illusion's upcoming game Hidden & Dangerous 2 that will be shown at this year's E3. The movie shows off part of the trailer, some previously unseen pics, and some gameplay footage.

HD2 video

OMG! Even at the fairly low quality of the video, you can see how awesome the game is gonna be! The lighting effects and in-engine cut scenes look killer! Def grab this movie!

Battlefield 1942 preview [7:14:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via SimHQ that the Thrustmaster FlightSim website has posted a preview of Digital Illusion CE's upcoming game, Battlefield: 1942, with the main 'thrust' of the article (a-hem) aimed at piloting the vehicles. Here's a clip:
The idea behind this new genre is to create the variety of roles and vehicles that participate in an entire battlefield. Instead of only flying the planes, the player can also drive the vehicles, or fight it out man-to-man and street-to-street.

BF1942 will have you playing as sniper, medic, or standard infantry, with a variety of special weapons, or occupying the pilot’s chair in a B17 or P51 or dive-bombing in a Ju87 Stuka.
Looks like BF1942 will be competing with OFP as far as scale and being able to pilot many types of vehicles, but will be historically based, whereas OFP will be fictional.. Should be interesting.

Covert Ops review [6:47:40 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Pie4Foo has posted an in-depth review of Redstorm's Covert Operations Essentials over at The Wargamer.

COE review

Here's a snip to get ya going:
However rewarding it may be to receive medals and certifications in the testing phase, it really doesn't encourage repetition of the tests. To me, the best application of the Officer's Candidate School would not be a classroom exercise, but rather a field operation. Covert Ops Essentials would have been a truly fascinating game if it had only included a way to practice what had just been presented in the training CD through tied-in mission CD operations. While there are certainly some technical hurdles to clear in order to implement such an idea, the current limitations in Covert Ops Essentials would have seemed so much more minor with such a revolutionary feature.
Check out the rest..

More OFP pics [6:29:39 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ColdWar Flashpoint pointed me in the direction of 22 new Operation Flasshpoint screenshots over at clan site The Winning Edge, that show off some of the vehicles you'll find in the game.

Project IGI review [6:11:18 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Computer Gaming World (looking more like GameSpot everyday) has posted a review of Innerloop's Project I.G.I., and smacked it with 2.5 stars, concluding "In the end, Project IGI can still be called a tactial sim, but barely. With no in-game save, dumb AI, and no multiplayer component, IGI just doesn't hit the mark. Project IGI can be fun to play, but it lacks the rewards of a Rogue Spear or SWAT 3." That about covers it.

MoH update [6:02:08 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Well, after working over 18 hours straight (minus about 25 mins for "lunch"), I'm able to find time to post some news again.
bulletAnyway, a few more Medal of Honor: Allied Assault articles have popped up around the net. First up, GameSpy has posted a "report" after attending the EA Games press event showcasing the PC and PlayStation versions.

Medal of Honor report

Gotta admit, the PS2 versions do look really nice. In any case, here's a snip on the PC version of the game:
Never before seen were close-ups of actual troops from the game. The detail in the facial features and clothing is unsurpassed, unlike anything we've seen before in a PC game. You could actually see the sheen in the Nazi Officer's leather trench coat. It was pure eye candy -- and we loved every minute of it.

bulletNext up, PC Gameplay posted an interview with Lincoln Hershberger, PC and Xbox Product Manager of the game. Here's a snip on Steven Spielberg's involvment in the game:
PCG: How much involvement did Spielberg have in this game?

LH: The whole MOH franchise was his concept, so he comes in periodically to check on progress, just because he's interested in it. On our side we like to get his input on the Omaha Beach situation, for example, because he was so immersed in that whole environment for Saving Private Ryan. We wanted to use his experience and knowledge background so we could make the length of the beach correct, the hedgehog (beach defences) placements correct, the bunker placements, where the machine guns were, and so on. We wanted to be as authentic as possible. Not to be a sim, but just to have a realistic overall feel.
The game def looks like it's shaping up nicely..

Still another OFP preview [5:28:02 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The deluge of Operation Flashpoint previews continues, this time over at 3D Action Planet, based on some hands-on play with the press demo. Here's a snip on some of the missions to expect:
The missions progressed in complexity, although there are a few other training missions thrown in, such as helicopter training and tank training. And that's what looks appealing about Operation Flashpoint: there's going to be plenty to keep your interest. In one mission you and your squad will surround a farmhouse on foot to eliminate resistance fighters, and in another you'll enter an enemy-held town, steal a truck containing important documents, and then drive like a bat out of hell for friendly territory.
No new pics, but they summed up the game quite nicely I thought. Def give it a read..

Conflict Desert Storm update [5:01:48 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Not sure when the page was updated, but the Conflict: Desert Storm website has updated their "Press Coverage" page with scans from 3 different UK print magazines that did features on the game.

Conflict: Desert Storm press articles
No -- this isn't Spec Ops 2!!

The articles are from Jan/Feb of this year, so they're fairly new. Most of the articles liken the game to Delta Force, Rogue Spear, and Hidden & Dangerous, and it's squad-based to boot, so ya know the game is right up our alley. Def give the articles a look..

MoH preview [4:42:58 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
As promised, pc.ign has posted a full preview of EA & 2015's upcoming Quake3-powered game, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault based on yesterday's press event.

MoH:AA preview

The article focuses mostly on the graphics engine. Here's a snip:
We also got a look at some of the vehicles in the game, from a military jeep to a motorcycle and sidecar and a slew of tanks. While the only vehicle you'll be able to drive in the game is the Sherman tank, you'll be able to ride as a passenger in several of the vehicles. You'll take the "shotgun" position to its fullest literal level as you act as a mobile sniper in certain levels, picking off bad guys from the confines of the jeep and motorcycle.
Nice... very nice.

DF:LW mod [4:33:28 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw by way of Land-Warrior.com that Sniper-Shot has details of a new mod for DF:LW that redoes the interface and on-screen weapon images, adds new single- and multi-play skins, and redoes some of the menu gfx. Seems like a worthwhile mod for sure. Head on over for more details.

Rogue Spear Platinum [1:42:52 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Following on the heels of Zombie's Spec Ops Platinum, RedStorm has released Rogue Spear Platinum, which in this case combines Rogue Spear, the Urban Operations mission pack, and the Prima strategy guide for both games, all in one package for a retail price of $34.99.

Yet another OFP preview [1:32:55 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Seems like the whole world has a press demo of Codematser's & Bohemia Interactive's game in progress, Operation Flashpoint, except me that is. In any case, Meome.de has posted a preview of the game in German (try here for an English translation.)

OFP German preview

Here's a snip from said English translation:
[...] moreover an extensive communication menu is to the player at the disposal, with which one can give [detailed] statements to individual team members or the whole team. [...] In addition, this communication with the team is urgently necessary, because with operation Flashpoint is Teamwork in demand.
Ya get the gist..

Thanks SimHQ for the news.

More Medal of Honor [23:14:33 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In case ya haven't had enough Medal of Honor news, there's another preview over at PC Zone, who do some damn fine previews, I must say. Here's a snip that's right up our alley:
Closer in style to H&D than Wolfenstein - or indeed any Quake-powered game to date - Medal Of Honor places a lot of emphasis on stealth and sabotage rather than mindless shooting action. In fact, if you try to go for the gung-ho approach you'll be shot to pieces faster than you can say Project IGI.
More fine stuff indeed..

Another OFP preview [22:05:22 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Another Operation Flashpoint preview has been posted at GameStreet.

OFP preview

Here's a snip:
Tension created by the ambient sound effects really completes the game. From the distant barking of dogs, to the chirping of grasshoppers and birds, it all feels so real. When you hear the ominous sound of squeaking tank tracks you know it's in your interest to hide. Quick. This brings us to the Artificial Intelligence utilised by both Computer controlled enemies and your squad mates. It behaves uncannily like a human.
Not much new in there, but the pics are sure sweet.

OFP preview [21:45:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There's a new Operation Flashpoint preview (in German) or in English (via BabelFish) over at GamesWeb. Also included are 16 shots of the game in action.

Project IGI review [21:28:03 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Missed this yesterday, but there's a review of Eidos'/Innerloop's sneaker-shooter, Project IGI over at MGON, where it scores a solid 70% overall. Here's a clip:
All in all, Project: IGI will give you a great single player experience the first time through. With a combination of decent graphics, great sound, and passable AI, it proves to be one of the best games in its "Thinker Shooter" category. The biggest downfall tended to be the lack of multiplayer, and the unfortunate missing ability to save mid level (comming soon to a patch near you). If you have some time to spend on it, and you enjoy a challenge, IGI is for you, otherwise, stick to Counter-Stike.

New H&D2 shots [17:25:35 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)

New Delta Force title? [18:02:43 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Not sure if this one is for us, but GA-Source is reporting that there is a new Delta Force title in the works, Delta Force: Elite Driver. Here's the rip:
Role of player: You are a Delta Force Elite Driver in the Gulf War. Your Fast Attack Vehicle is a stripped down - tooled up fighting machine used for rapid offensive missions to penetrate enemy territory at high speeds, destroy SCUD launchers before they fire, rescuing allied soldiers stuck behind enemy lines and recovering stolen gold. You'll either have to sneak into enemy territory or be dropped off by chopper under the cover of night.

Gameplay: You will be called into combat in a variety of different missions. Some are out in the desert, other are based in the cities All are along and behind enemy lines. As a driver you have to be skilled at not only controlling the vehicle, but using the frame mounted machine guns and grenade launchers, identifying hazards such as mine fields and working with your fellow drivers on team based missions.
Looks like vehicular-based combat will be the next 'big thing' in gaming (HALO, Shrapnel, Tribes 2, Planetside, etc.) I'm not even sure if this is a NovaLogic title, but one would think they've trademarked the Delta Force name, at least as it pertains to gaming.. Maybe they licenced out the title to expand the franchise..

IGI review #745 [17:47:07 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Yet another IGI review can be found over at GameRaiders, where it scores an 87% overall. Here's the ubiquitous snip:
Project IGI offers 14 single player missions, which generally entail infiltration of a guarded compound. Once inside these compounds you are expected to complete a variety of goals ranging from gathering information to destruction of key targets. Project IGI focuses more on stealth and cunning rather then on sheer firepower. Trying to blast your way through a mission will only bring down an endless parade of guards on some missions---which makes it close to impossible to complete your goals!
Is anyone still playing this?

Project IGI review [18:20:35 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The game that would not die (as far as game reviews are concerned), Project IGI has been reviewed over at 3D GameForce, where they smack it with a 5.5 score, and a 'don't buy' recommendation. Yowsa! The article was pretty in-depth, but flat out wrong in a few places (the alarm button 'bug' for instance, is not a bug; you have to make sure you turn off the correct switch, otherwise you'll just turn ON another alarm.) Plus there were the usual grumblings of no save, spawning AI and no multiplayer, all of which are, of course, valid complaints. Check out the article for more..

Fansite Allied Assault has posted an edited Q & A with a few members of the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault development team as they answered questions in the site's forums. Here's a sample Q & A:
Q: Since this game uses the Q3 engine the specs should be roughly the same! Right guys?

Coriolis: We are doing more stuff than Q3 did and are coming out almost 2 years after it did, so our min specs will probably end up being higher than Q3's were. On the other hand, we are doing everything we can (short of sacrificing game play) to keep the minimum specs as low as possible.
Most of the questions are of the technical variety. Give it a read.

Battlefield 1942 interview [17:58:56 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I'm posting this while standing up in front of the server console as the web site computer is the only one with power at the moment. In any case, Planet X-Box has put up an interview with Ola Holmdahl, game designer of Digital Illusion CE's upcoming WWII FPS, Battlefield: 1942. Here's a snip on the single-player scenario:
PlanetXbox: With regards to single player gameplay, will it following a specific storyline or will it diverge based upon the players successes and failures?

DICE: The storyline is pretty fixed to the historical framework, but within each battle, the player will be given specific goals and opportunities. This doesn't always mean 'kill the enemy'. The Germans defending Berlin in 1945, for instance, fought to keep the Red Army at bay long enough for the Americans to arrive and liberate the city. In Battlefield 1942, you can fail or succeed in this: it's up to you.

Server downtime [14:54:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Sorry for the real short notice, but the site will probably be down for awhile, starting Thursday (today) at 17:30 EST as my company once again has work done on the power lines coming into the building.

Barring any disasters, I'll be back up sometime late Friday or early Saturday.

See ya then!

UPDATE: They brought in a generator, so the downtime should be pretty minimal. Keep checking back!

Medal of Honor preview [0:53:52 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Maybe a bit off-topic, but as I really dig WWII-themed games I'll let ya know that DailyRadar has posted a preview of 2015/Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

Medal of Honor preview

Here's a snip on the mission objectives you'll have to achieve:
While earning accolades may give you bragging rights with your friends, it's the objectives that are the meat of the game. You'll be ordered to make strategic assaults (both by yourself or as part of a crack military team), infiltrate enemy headquarters disguised as a Nazi, rescue POWs, drive tanks and other military vehicles, destroy enemy installations, and demolish historically accurate landmarks.
So it looks like it'll be partially squad-based which is cool by me. Gotta admit, I'm def looking forward to this one when it ships later this year.

Another OFP preview [0:11:04 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
If ya haven't had enough Operation Flashpoint news already, there's another OFP preview over at fansite Operation-Flashpoint.de which features a very hands-on look at the game. Here's a snip of the action:
But an order of my leader took me back to "life". "1, Attack Officier at 2 o'clock". Then i saw my enemy and i shot at him. After a short round of bullets he didn't get up again. Suddenly two bullets hit the dirt right infront of me........ then a short pain and I saw my body from above with a big "YOU ARE DEAD".
Flashpoint is def gonna be a winner folks..
