ZOWIE! [20:45:46 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Sorry for the unexpected downtime... I had a memory chip in the server go bad, that I initially took for a bad HD (because Windows complained that system files were corrupt during boot-up.) I went out and bought a nice big 40 GB HD, but when I went to re-install Win NT, it would fail everytime. I then went to my old server, tried to re-install Win NT there, and that machine did the same thing. I even tried moving up to Win 2000, but that failed to install as well. Not a fun scene.

Not only that, but in the process of formatting the 40 gigger (using 'special' software that came with the drive), I actually lost the entire site! Unbeknownst to me, it re-wrote the root block of all the drives in the system (3 of them), thus effectively erasing all my drives, which of course had the website and the backups on them (3 different sets on 2 different drives)! At that point, I was ready to pack it in and call it quits for good! After a good night's sleep, I fooled with the formatting software some more and saw a 'restore track 0' option that I used on the drive that contained the backups and luckily the drive came back! At that point I was determined to now get the website back up, or else!!

Finally it occurred to me that a DIMM could be bad (out of 3), so I randomly picked one, removed it, and voila', everything started working again! I've never had a DIMM go bad before which is why I never thought it could be that.

BUT! On the plus side, I also upgraded some of the hardware while I was at it. Besides the new 40 GB drive, this machine has a dual P3-550 motherboard (up from a single P2-400) which should keep things speedy. Currently the memory is only 192 MB (would have been 320 MB, but the DIMM that died was 128 MB.) I'll order some more RAM on Monday and bring it up to 512 MB or more..

I lost a lot of sleep this week, but it's good to be back online. Believe me, I hated the downtime probably more than you did.

As always, thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet.

Heckler & Koch Weapons Add-Ons for OFP [22:20:10 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If for some reason you thought Operation: Flashpoint was dull because of its realistically limited selection of small arms, then rouse yourself from your doldrums, true believer! Vipersheart and Friends have whipped up lots of dandy and excellent Heckler & Koch weapons for OFP. (Tip: the OICW beats the hooey out of anything you saw in Ghost Recon.) "Whiskey Foxtrot Fo-wer Zee-ro to Whiskey Foxtrot Fife Zee-ro, En-joy! I say again, 'En-joy!'"

True Combat mod for Quake 3 Engine [21:43:38 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you're a big fan of Quake 3 and want to try one of the "reality mods", you might want to give True Combat a look-see. I haven't played it, so I can't base my opinion on much more than the screenshots. From them, I'd have to say that it looks like True Combat has a way to go before it will be Infiltration-caliber, but then I don't remember ever seeing rain or such real-looking streetlights in Inf.

Whatever your final conclusion, free games are rarely not worth the money you didn't spend.

Global Ops Public Beta Mirrors [21:31:50 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you haven't given the Global Ops Public Beta a whirl, I highly recommend you do so, downloading it from any one of these mirrors.

The weapon models, sounds, and animations are very pleasing and the thermal and night vision goggles affect gameplay in an interesting way. The gas mask is excellent, reminding me of a scene from the movie Final Option/Who Dares Wins, a movie loosely based on the Special Air Service siege of the Iranian Embassy in London, and the CS (tear-gas) effects are without rival.

Team Factor Screenies and Interview [21:10:21 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
There are about 4 new Team Factor screenshots. Wooooh, careful there, 7fx. That foliage is looking like something out of Operation: Flashpoint, and we all know what a whiny, nit-picky gaming community can require of a game sporting excellent game-play...graphics engine update!

There is also a very detailed interview with Rbull available, covering all manner of gameplay specifics.

Unreal2 Engine for Realistic Tactical FPS? [21:00:07 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
People are wondering whether the use of the Unreal2 Engine by UbiSoft/RedStorm Entertainment for their upcoming Rainbow Six: Raven Shield bodes well for the R6/RS community.

For details about the many features of the Unreal2 Engine, Jester has written an article. If the Unreal Engine is good enough for the Infiltration team, I think it will work just fine for any R6 incarnation. My concern is that UbiSoft's Tac-FPS devteam seems to have a sheltered French-Canadiocentric view of the CT universe.

Toast of the Town! [20:46:28 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
There is a really fun add-on out for Operation: Flashpoint that is a fine example of how powerful the scripting language available to modders of OFP is.

To prove that I'm not simply being inflammatory, download the new unofficial Flamethrower mod. Trust me!

It seems like a pretty powerful weapon, but it is hard to accuse it of being imbalanced when it has an effective range that is probably shorter than it would in real life.

The only thing it lacks is a good sound effect. Now shut up and pass the Kraft marshmallows!

Yip! [11:55:05 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I just got back from a little trip to Las Vegas.. Had a good time and the weather was nice, but it was over too soon (as vacations always are..) Thanks to AndOne and Uziyahu for keeping the news flowing.

Tho, in related news, it seems my computer's motherboard is on the fritz (it takes like 10 tries before it'll power up) and my cable connection is acting up as well (losing packets bigtime.) This won't affect the webite, but it will affect my ability to post news.. I hope to have everything straightened out shortly.

And now it's off to sleep.. I've been up for about 28 hrs straight, and I'm just a bit tired.

H&D Deluxe Interview [10:01:08 EST] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
HomeLan Fed has a interview with Lonely Cat Games. The topic is Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe, which is all set for release any day now (Sadly, no US date is planned)
HomeLAN - What specifically did you guys do to update the title?

Michal Bacik - We used original graphics and put it into new engine with support of hardware-accelerated vertex processing (GF3, Radeon 8500, etc). Plus new effects were introduced, like real-time shadows, lightmapping, bumpmaps, envmapping, singlemesh characters, etc. The core of the game left the same, because we didn't want to create a new game (also we didn't have schedule and resources for this), but most parts of game - AI, network, etc, was tuned up, considering feedback from more testing groups. Player may expect all 23 original missions plus 9 datadisk missions in the game. Plus possibility to play with graphics contents or create own missions with included editor. This will also allow players put really good add-ons onto the internet for download to other players, and possibly play such add-ons on net. Single add-on allows one to six missions, which appear as one campaign.
Not much new info, but he did say the user would be able to play with the graphics and make totally new missions. Check out the rest.

Black Hawk Down mod for Rogue Spear [10:00:16 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)

OFP:Resistance -- Details & Screens from Marek [22:16:00 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
Worthplaying.com has a short interview with Marek Spanel, leader of the development team for Operation: Flashpoint, concerning the coming expansion pack slated to be released on June 21st of this year.

If you look closely, you will see that answering the whines of virtual tree-huggers results in a map with less trees and bushes, though now you will be able to take the time to pause and admire individual leaves while you're ducking PK fire.

DF:TFD interview [12:51:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PC.IGN has posted an interview with Zombie's Mark Long, where they discuss Delta Force: Task Force Dagger.

DF:TFD interview

Here's a clip:
IGNPC: Why is it important to you to make a game that centers on an actual war? What makes the conflict in Afghanistan a strong scenario for you?

Mark Long: I don't know if it's "important", but I do think it's a compelling game fiction. This is the first SPECWAR ever fought. And Special Forces operators make great FPS characters -- they operate alone or in small teams, they use advanced weaponry and equipment, and they are highly trained, lethal soldiers. They're also heroes, in every sense of the word. And not just American heroes - but British, Canadian and Australian heroes. These guys deserve to have a game made about them. And the fact that it is timely is all the better.
Interesting stuff.. Two new shots are included. Check out the rest..

Desert Siege GOLD! [12:40:07 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
RedStorm has announced that Desert Siege, the expansion pack for Ghost Recon, has gone gold, and will be shipping on March 26th. Here's a snip of the good stuff:
Desert Siege is the mission pack for the 2001 PC Gamer and IGNPC Game of the year Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon™.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon™: Desert Siege will ship on March 26th 2002 and will contain 8 new Single-Player missions. The missions will be based in North Africa, focusing on a future conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The Mission Pack will feature a new environment - the Eritrean desert, new enemies and new desert uniforms for the Ghosts. 5 new Multiplayer spaces will also be included in the Mission Pack.

The mission pack will also include an editing toolkit for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon™ enabling players to create their own levels for the game.

For more information on this release, please go to www.ghostrecon.com/desertsiege.php
Note the newly-opened Desert Siege website has gone live too. And hopefully the gaming community will crank out some new missions with the editing tools as well.

H&D Deluxe update [19:23:40 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I fired off some email to Lonely Cat Games to get the status of Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe, and got a reply back from Michal Bacik of LCG.

Here's the goods:
The game has gone Gold this Monday. Multilanguage version will be out soon, followed by separate Japan and Czech versions.

No demo is planned, because it's not a new game.

Ship dates are up to publisher, but it should be this month.
Too bad there'll be no demo, but this game is def a 'must have' if you skipped the original H&D, or if you want to see H&D in all it's glory on a modern engine.. I'll be first in line..

Desert Siege shots [19:17:19 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys from TacticalGames.nl sent word that they've posted 29 exclusive shots from Redstorm and UbiSoft's upcoming stand-alone expansion pack for Ghost Recon, Desert Siege.

Looking sweet for sure..

BF: 1942 preview [19:09:26 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Killaman sent word that pc.ign has posted a 'hands on' preview of EA and Digital Illusion's WWII shooter, Battlefield: 1942.

BF 1942 preview

Here's how the game plays out:
Most of the maps are designed around capturing certain key objectives. These objectives are indicated on your mini map by small flags. As one side takes an objective, they raise their own flag over the area. Since you can see the flags on the small map and in the game world itself, it gives you a really good idea of how the war is progressing. If a bunch of flags get taken on your flank, you'll need to move in to reinforce your position there. A system of grid coordinates makes it easier to respond to the various audio cues that you receive. Most of the maps are about 4km square and you'll be labeled a deserter if you spend more than a few seconds outside of the borders.
Def sounding good to me..

SWAT: urban Justice preview [12:10:24 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Armchair Empire have put up a preview of Sierra's upcoming tactical shooter, SWAT: Urban Justice. Here's a highlight:
In Swat: Urban Justice (SUJ), before a scenario, you will not only be able to outfit your whole team to you exact specifications, but you will also be able to customize the stock, sight, suppressor, grip and other parts of your weapons. Also, after a being pulled over by cop for an ‘unwarranted’ speeding ticket, what could be more fun than stepping into the shoes of a virtual thug, and taking it to tha Po-leece. The developers have thought of you, my generally law-abiding friend, as there will be a Hero vs. Villian mode where you can become the villain, and try to outwit an assaulting SWAT team.
The game is on track for a September 2002 release.

Lloyd Bailey Working on DF:TFD! [17:19:13 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
Those of you who have enjoyed Rainbow Six or Rogue Spear and been brave enough to try out user-made mods for these games may remember Lloyd Bailey of the "Lloyd's Weapon Mod" series.

Well, he has just announced that he has been working on character skins, weapons models, and level design for Delta Force: Task Force Dagger, being made by Zombie Studios. Zombie needed someone to make character skins and combed the modding community for a talented person and naturally found Lloyd. Congratulations, Lloyd!

SWAT: Urban Justice interview [3:36:27 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys over at 10-David have posted an interview with Sierra's Charles Cox, where they discusss all things SWAT: Urban Justice. Here's a sample Q & A:
10-David: Will SWAT: UJ’s multiplayer system be supported through Sierra’s matching/lobby system, as SWAT 3 was? Will there be any direct IP matching services included in addition? How about dedicated servers?

Charles Cox: The system that we used in SWAT 3 was called Won.net. Won.net has since been dissolved and we have developed a new system called ‘Sierra On-Line’ which will be used by SWAT: UJ for lobbying and matchmaking. There will also be Direct IP and Dedicated Server support in SWAT: UJ.
Release date is slated for September 2002.

Conflict Desert Storm preview [20:18:49 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from MGON is a preview of Conflict: Desert Storm, Pivotal Games' tactical shooter loosley based on The Gulf War conflict, and set for release on the PC and Xbox in June 2002. Here's some of the good stuff:
Like recent winners Operation Flashpoint and Ghost Recon, Desert Storm sees you controlling a team of specialist soldiers (in this case four).

The game will begin with you playing as just one member of the team, a chap called Bradley. You will be able to play as either British SAS or US Delta Force soldiers and each has different attributes. The SAS have the ability to heal themselves and the Delta Force troops are better with handguns so there are tactical choices to be made.
Looking forward to this one too.

S o F 2 interview [19:51:36 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
MGON has put up an interview with Raven's Kenn Hoekstra, discussing Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix, their Quake3-powered military shooter.

SoF2 interview

Here's what Kenn had to say about the game's atmospherics:
MGON: How will the weather effects (snow, rain, fog) affect the player during the course of the game and are these effects random or designated to certain maps?

Kenn: Most of the weather effects in Soldier of Fortune 2 are for atmosphere and realistic environmental looks as opposed to hindering the player or complicating his mission. We originally thought about having the player’s weapon jam after submerging in water or getting rained on, etc. but thought better of it because it took control away from the player.

We want the game to be fun, not frustrating. Environmental effects appear on maps where it’s appropriate but there are weather options that can be turned on and off in the random mission generator.
I vote for fun too! Check out the rest of the interview, and screenshots that go along with it..

IGI2 preview [19:37:23 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Those little green men at GameSpy have posted a preview of Codemasters' and Innerloop Studio's upcoming stealthy FPS, IGI 2: Covert Strike.

IGI2 preview

Here's a clip on the game's new save system:
The team has implemented a new save system for the game that could be a love it or hate it approach but an early look at it makes saving possible without taking away the tension that makes this kind of gameplay so compelling. The save system will function like a map computer that Jones uses to receive tactical support in the field from the HQ -- and Jones will have the ability to download and upload his current mission status and position. This recreates the save/load aspect of the game but it will take time and battery power in the field so you'll have to be somewhat tactical about how you choose to save your games.
Sounds like a workable solution to me.. Release is still slated for Spring 2002.

Global Ops Open Beta [22:37:26 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
An open beta has been released for Global Operations which you can download at FilePlanet. It is a bit unstable, but the nicely-simulated weapons make you want to do well so that you can try all of them out. Damage-modelling seems to need some work and "happy trails" trying to find an open server. Players who have been to Basic Training or Boot Camp will shed a nostalgic tear as they run through a cloud of CS. Definitely worth checking out if you like small-mapped urban combat shooters.

Delta Force: Task Force Dagger [20:46:06 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Novalogic has announced the 4th installment of the Delta Force series, Delta Force: Task Force Dagger, which is being developed by Zombie Studios (devs of Spec Ops and Spec Ops 2) using an enhanced DF:LW engine. Here's the pertinent info:
Utilizing NovaLogic's updated Land Warrior engine, Task Force Dagger has been designed by Zombie as an entirely new game with new characters, weapons and single and multiplayer levels. One of the new features that has never previously been seen in a Delta Force game is the ability to play as one of 10 Special Operations forces; from Delta Force and Marines Force Recon to SEAL and British SAS.

"Zombie is designing and developing a Delta Force game based on actual targets and objectives real life operations would encounter, from raids on airfields to the battle for a major city," explained Mark Long, Zombie CEO.

Commenting on the development partnership, NovaLogic President, Lee Milligan said, "We're very pleased to be working with Zombie Studios on Delta Force: Task Force Dagger. They have the experience, knowledge and ability to work with us to do the Delta Force franchise justice and to deliver a combination of realism and originality that will delight and surprise the Delta Force community".

DF:TFD shots

Blue's News has posted the first 4 screenshots from the game.

Interesting news indeed.. I've been a big fan of both the Spec Ops and Delta Force series, so i'm looking forward to this one.

OFP Gold pulled [19:17:20 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In a major "oopsie", Codemasters has pulled the Gold Edition of Operation Flashpoint from US shelves, and those that purchased it will need a replacement CD. Here's the scoop:
The master disk for the North American version of Operation Flashpoint Gold Edition contains a flaw that prevents it from loading.

This problem does not affect the Gold Upgrade or any other version of Operation Flashpoint in any territory.

When Codemasters discovered the problem they immediately withdrew the product from sale throughout North America. A new, correct, master has been created and [the] perfect product will go on sale across North America next week.

For those that have already bought the flawed disk Codemasters have implemented a replacement system. Any legitimate owner should contact Codemasters customer service in the USA, who will make quick security checks before sending out a replacement disk.

New BF: 1942 screens [17:23:34 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Shidan sent word of two new screens from Digital Illusion & EA's upcoming WWII shooter, Battlefield: 1942 that were posted in the Codename Eagle forums. The forums load kinda slow, so I've got local copies as well.

Shidan describes the pictures as:
One screen is from a b-17 bomber high altitude, the other is taken from the ground at the same time... they look absolutely gorgeous.

IGI2: Covert Strike preview [4:55:37 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has put up a preview of Codemasters' and Innerloop Studio's upcoming stealth shooter, IGI2: Covert Strike, based on a beta build of the game.

IGI2 preview

Here's some of the environments we can expect to be fighting in:
Already it seems like the designers are determined to show off a variety of environments and a lot of different mission objectives. Among the locales we witnessed in our missions were a forest hideout, a snowy mountain peak, and an amalgam of desolate desert and hillside. In addition, many missions require you to slink around in indoor installations and buildings.
Five new screenshots are included as well. Def check them out.

Desert Siege chat transcript [4:38:25 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Ghost Recon Retreat have posted a chat transcript from the chat they recently held with UbiSoft and Redstorm, discussing Desert Siege. Here's a clip:
From Email: What was the inspiration behind Desert Siege? Did the events of Sept 11th and the assault on Afghanistan have anything to do with it?

GR DS was designed based on the contrasting settings in the original GR. There's no doubt that desert conflict has been highly visible within the news, but our story line runs several years in the future and occurs in a different country/continent. Similar visuals, radically different story.
Check out the rest..

Operation Flashpoint Patch to v1.46 & DevTools News [23:12:11 EST] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
The patch to version 1.46 of Operation Flashpoint is available at the Flashpoint1985 site. It fixes bugs produced by the v1.45 patch. If you haven't tried v1.45, yet, the "all enemy A.I. alerted by the killing of their buddy" fix, alone, makes it worth the download.

In other OFP news, Bohemia Interactive has gone back to a previous position that they will be releasing the OFP development tools only to certain approved mods. They again give their word that one day the whole OFP community will be given access to the tools.

R6: Raven Shield info [21:47:09 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Seems like the R6: Raven Shield site has been updated with a press release detailing the game, and the first 4 screenshots to be had.

R6: Raven Shield site

Here's a snippet from the press release:
The Rainbow Six franchise is known for its action-packed game play and heart-stopping realism, and Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield will continue the tradition. Developed by Ubi Soft's Montreal studio, in close collaboration with Red Storm Entertainment, Rainbow Six®: Raven Shield features a brand new Tom Clancy storyline in which Team RAINBOW is led all over the world in a string of dramatic operations. The game will utilize graphics technology provided by the next-generation Unreal™ engine to power 15 new single-player missions that include the discovery of a cache of biological weapons and stopping an armed gang from terrorizing a London bank.
Hope the game is better than Black Thorn..

New tactical shooter [19:45:44 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The official Specnaz: Project Wolf website has gone live, with details of the game, based on the Russian Special Forces unit. The game will feature real-world locations such as Yeman, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran, and, of course, real-world weapons. The 'hook' to the game seems to be that you will have a wolf, a 'super trained animal battle machine', to control on missions as well. Here's a bit on the game's overview, the typical 'stop the nuclear threat' type dealie:
Time horizont of the SPECNAZ project is not concretely specified. But the true is, that a story is occurred after the Soviet Union disintegration, and on a break through a millennium. Russian secret bases are not anymore prosperous for the concrete affairs and Russian economic situation can not afford to maintain in running mode their former camps and secret military bases in the territories around the world. In former Cubans and Russian bases operating in Africa, there is evidence of a huge amount of the nuclear arsenal from the time of the cold war. It is concretely about the nuclear military warheads, plutonium and briefcase atomic bombs. For this purpose, it will be elaborated a program for removing of all materials form the mentioned bases. Of course, the program will be secret to keep these information away from the public especially concerning to the topic of the lost nuclear arsenal form the former military deposit of the Soviet Union. For this purpose, special garrison of a heavy freight carrier type IL76 will be chosen, which will collect this "PACKAGE" and it will export back to Russia. On the way back, after undertaking of the concrete "PACKAGE", the airplane will getting lost. SPECNAZ are coming on the stage.
English is not their primary language, but you get the gist..

There's also an interview (thanks Blue's News) with Martin Hornak of developer BYTE Software where they discuss the game. Here's a clip:
DTF: What do you mean by saying "outdoor action"? Will we see some kind of Delta Force, or it will be stealth shooter, like Project IGI?

Martin Hornak: Our project is more comparable with games like Delta Force, but with tactical part similar to Ghost Recon.
Def sounds right up our alley.. No release date is known yet tho.

Global Ops goods [10:46:47 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The official Global Ops site has posted a 'making of' page that gives a behind the scenes look at how the intro video was created.

Here's a little bit to start ya off:
All the muzzle flares, shell casings, smoke trails, and blood sprays effects were composited by Steve Mumford. He used a cool little sprite animation program called Illusion for the shells and smoke effects. The blood was arduously hand painted in Photoshop as were some of the muzzle flares. The only CG muzzle flare shot in the movie is the Heavy Gunner spray and that used some of the textures and techniques used in the actual game.
If you haven't already seen the video grab the hi-res (33.6 MB) or low-res (16.7 MB) version and take a look.
