Here's a bit of the PR: "'Kuma\War' enables consumers to experience actual missions of real soldiers in the war on terror," said Keith Halper, CEO of Kuma Reality Games. "Players have to devise the tactics and make the hard choices in some of the most important events of our time. For our subscribers, we make the headlines real."Subscription costs $9.99 a month. A movie showing off some in-game action of the little-publicized to-be-released title Specnaz: Project Wolf is available for download at GMX Media. The game looks interesting and will be playable on lower-end systems, but more than half of the video is taken up with mere text. The official site listed at the end of the video doesn't appear to be ready, yet. [Update]: Mirror at Gamer's Hell (no registration required). Thanks again Kristian K. Related News |

*Operation Flashpoint XBox Screens!
[18:22:56 EST] by
~~
Uziyahu
A few screenshots of the XBox version of Operation Flashpoint have been released. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While the new "grass" isn't looking so hot, the new soldiers models are a great improvement, as they now show what the "steel pot"-wearing United States Regular Army and National Guard troops were outfitted with in 1985, versus OFP:CWC's kevlar-wearing 1987'ish soldiers using Vietnam-era magazine pouches and canteen holders. In keeping with the L.B.E. configuration standard since Vietnam, the soldiers now have a buttpack on their pistol belts in the back instead of the erroneous poncho/parka/tent roll fastened high on Korean War-era "H" Suspenders seen in OFP:CWC. The sniper also looks more like a real United States Army Cold-War-era sniper, now. Great work, B.I.! A small detail not in harmony with the first screenshot is that a lot of the United States Army's units didn't have Humvees in 1985, yet. Instead, the Army was using something called the CUCV, essentially a camouflaged Chevy Blazer. I can't wait to try XBox OFP online with mid-game joining (or "JIP", "Join in Progress") and the steady voice com so effective at promoting teamwork in XBox Counter-Strike and Rainbow Six 3. |

Joint Operations site launches
[16:33:51 EST] by
~~
Rushian
I saw by way of Blue's News that NovaLogic has launched their dedicated Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising website. There you'll find different sections for Features, Gallery, Downloads, Coverage, & Links, with future sections of Rent Game Servers and Pre-Order to be unveiled later. Here's a snip from the Features section: * Drivable vehicles……lots of them. Use land, sea & air vehicles to your advantage. Pilot helicopters, command boats and drive fast attack vehicles with your team on board, firing on the move. Use LCACs (Landing Craft Air Cushioned) or Chinook helicopters to transport teammates and vehicles from island to island or across expansive terrain.Looking good.. The latest intel says the game is on track for a May release. Related News

Soldner: Secret Wars preview
[18:32:37 EST] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at GameSpot have also posted a preview of Soldner: Secret Wars based on some time spent with the multiplayer beta. Here's a snip: Soldner's most unique feature also promises to be its most fun; the game features a fully destructible environment. Virtually everything in the game can be destroyed. Tanks can demolish buildings or blast craters in the ground big enough that infantry can huddle in them for cover. Explosions can knock down trees in the middle of battle, and the threat of falling lumber is very real. Trees can also be knocked down to create impromptu roadblocks, especially against wheeled vehicles.Related News

Shadow Ops dev diary, pt 2
[4:36:49 EST] by
~~
Rushian
HomeLAN Fed has posted part two of their developer diary with a few members of Zombie, the dev team working on Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. This installment covers all aspects of the audio to be found in the game. Here's a sound bite (pun intended For Red Mercury, we took it one step further in our push for a cinematic experience. We've also had great support from Peter Zinda and Soundelux (from Black Hawk Down, Saving Pvt. Ryan, etc.) in terms of asset creation and mixing. He made almost all the gunshot sounds and a fair number of incidental sounds as well. I was very exciting to sit with him as he developed massive gun shot sounds from live recordings they had made, sweetened with metallic clunks he recorded on the spot and synthesizer sounds or any variety of sounds. I love the stereo and in some cases quadraphonic realization of the first person weapons. It’s certainly the most important set of sounds in the game and I'm really thrilled at how they turned out.Related News

kill.switch hands on
[4:00:34 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot has posted a nifty little 'hands on' about Namco's pc-port of their military action-shooter kill.switch. Excerpt: Naturally, the levels in kill.switch offer all sorts of cover, from abandoned cars sitting in the middle of the street to collapsed walls, not to mention countless corners to peek around. Many of the early levels resemble areas from the Middle East, and with the heavy firefights, they feel reminiscent of many of the urban combat scenes from the movie Black Hawk Down. You can also use the enemies' mounted weapons against them; for example, if you knock out the gunner on a technical (a small, four-wheeled car with a machine gun mounted in the bed), you can then use it against a wave of incoming enemies.Lots of good info in this one; check it out. I'll def be picking this one up once it's released, in about one week's time. Related News |

Shadow Ops preview
[1:48:28 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GameInformer has posted a preview (thanks Blue's News) of Zombie's upcoming XBox & PC military shooter, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury along with some screenshots and a 2 minute video of the game in action. Here's a snip from the preview on the game's AI: The real kicker is that the enemies in the game, thanks to some pretty aggressive AI, will also use the environment to their advantage, meaning that they won’t just be running around aimlessly, waiting for you to take them down at your own leisure. Enemies will station themselves behind things like boxes and other objects, and will even use cover fire to suppress your movement while some of the squad mates may be moving in to flank you from another side.Def looking forward to this one. Keep in mind the game is still in Beta, so there could be bugs.. [Update]: Like most every other internet-only wargame (WWII Online, America's Army, etc), the Kuma servers have been overwhelmed, making the game currently unplayable for most of us. *Joint Ops previews
[5:03:25 EST] by
~~
Rushian
Those little green men at GameSpy have put up a preview of NovaLogic's next MP shooter, Joint Operations. Clip: The most significant change to Joint Operations in the past few months is the addition of the new "Advance and Secure" mode. Basically, each map has a set of control points lined up in a chain, and the teams fight back and forth for control of all the bases. Unlike the Battlefield games, there aren't any "tickets" and you're not free to roam to any point and try to capture it; you can only capture the next point in the chain beyond the one you currently own, keeping the action focused to two points at a time.Def a good read; very informative. The game is set for a mid-May release, with a demo planned for sometime in April. [Update]: GameSpot has also posted theier own preview of JO as well, along with some nice screen snaps. Check it! [Update]: And another preview at pc.ign. Related News |

*kill.switch review
[23:52:57 EST] by
~~
Rushian
C&VG has posted a review of the Bitmap Brothers' port of Namco's military action shooter, kill.switch, where it scores a 74% overall. Here's a clip: The story running though the missions is predictable, but what makes kill.switch worthwhile is a feature termed 'Offensive Cover'. In essence, all this means is that by pressing the 'crouch' key in close proximity to an upright surface, your character will hunker down to offer the smallest possible profile to the enemy. You can still move, slowly, but the best thing is that you can 'blindfire' around corners or pop your head out to let off a more accurate shot. Thanks Blue's News. [Update]: There's another review up at Ferrago of the PS2 version. (81%) Related News

Shadow Ops dev diary

Rushian
HomeLAN Fed has posted a developer diary from Zombie's John Williamson, where he details how they gather background material for their upcoming military shooter, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. Here's a sniperoo: We traveled to Moscow, Rabat Morocco, Europe, Hawaii and Croatia to grab texture maps and record binaural audio. We visited aircraft carriers, container ships, Russian subs. While we used Soundeluxe for many of our audio needs, we also spent time with a very large selection of weapons, recording audio for dry fire, reload, weapon select, reload as well as animations for each of these actions. It really helps your animators create dramatic player view anims when they have fired the weapons themselves.Def interesting to read of their experiences while traveling to various countries of the world doing research for the game. *Battlefield Vietnam ships / review
[19:40:52 EST] by
~~
Rushian
It's official, EA & DICE's next cash-cow Battlefield: Vietnam has shipped and should already be in stores. Here's some of the PR: REDWOOD CITY , Calif. - March 15, 2004 - Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced that Battlefield Vietnam, the latest title in the award-winning Battlefield PC game series under the EA GAMES brand, has today begun to ship to retail outlets. Battlefield Vietnam, like its brethren Battlefield games, allows players to join forces on teams in games with up to 64 players over the Internet.I'm hearing good things about it, so go pick up your copy today! [Update]: In other BFV news, GameSpy is first out of the gate with a full review of the game, scoring it at 4 out of 5 stars. Here's a clip: Two big changes and a handful of tweaks set Vietnam apart from its predecessor. The most obvious change is in the graphics engine: ground clutter covers the hillsides with thick vegetation and heavy forests sway in the wind. This favors some new gameplay, as it's much easier than before to go prone amidst a clump of underbrush unseen by the enemy. Occasionally machinegun fire will rip out of the jungle from unexpected angles, cutting you down before you can even get a look at your assailant: Welcome to 'Nam! Being able to hide in the jungle makes it a little easier for one solider or a small group of soldiers to defend a location, but fortunately this isn't so effective as to slow down the brisk pace of the game. Expect to be frustrated by snipers and hidden enemies, however.Def sounds like fun! Related News |

kill.switch [PC] review
[9:58:23 EST] by
~~
Rushian
LoadedInc has posted a quickie review of Namco's PC-port of their console military shooter, kill.switch, based on 'final code', and awarded it an 85% overall. Clippage: Weapons include AK-47, AKU and M249 as well as heavier weaponry such as grenades which can be thrown or fired. Each weapon comes into its own depending on the situation, and the ability to pull up a sniper scope came in handy on more than one occasion. Nothing as satisfying as a good head shot on someone poking their ugly mug round a corner ;) While you dash through the scenarios, you can also take up stationary gun positions making it easier to mow down the enemy, of course they have the same idea making your progression a tougher.Related News |

R6: Athena Sword review
[4:53:59 EST] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot seems to be the first out of the gate with a full review of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Athena Sword, where is scores a 78% overall. Here's the obligatory snip: Not only are all the levels in Athena Sword quite large, especially by Raven Shield standards, but they're chock-full of personality and color. There's almost a sun-drenched atmosphere in the daytime missions that brings out the vibrancy of the textures. Ubisoft Milan has definitely upped the cultural quotient of the franchise by packing in tons of classical architecture, artwork, and statuary that really conveys the feeling that you're battling it out in the middle of Old Europe. Some great screenshots accompany the article as well. *kill.switch demo / shots
[21:58:05 EST] by

Rushian
Out of blue comes word that Hip Games has released the demo of Namco's military shooter, kill.switch, which weighs in at a svelte 78 MB. Grab it from: 3D Gamers, FileRush, Gamer's Hell, or WorthPlaying [Update]: I took some snaps of the game in action. The game doesn't seem that tactical, and the controls take a bit getting used to (the camera especially), but once ya get into the groove, it looks like it'll be a nice little game. Being able to shoot from cover is a pretty nice feature. The weapons have a pretty good bark and kick too. Depending on the price, I'll def be picking this one up. [Update]: There's also some more shots over at ActionTrip. Related News

Kuma\War shots
[2:14:33 EST] by
~~
Rushian
My good buddy CorporalGeo sent off some great screenshots from the beta of Kuma Reality Games' Kuma\War, which I've recently learned uses nFusion's nWorld engine (LOS:V, DD1&2). There are a few tweaks to the engine that you can see, such as the character posture icon, and on-screen icon of your weapon, which makes up for the fact that there is no weapon visible in 1st-person mode (to keep the framerate up). I may have a new batch tomorrow, so stay tuned.. I tell ya, my interest in this game just went way up, but I'm not liking the fact that it will be subscription-based. In any case, a free 3-day trial should be coming out soon, so stay tuned for that as well. Related News |

Battlefield Vietnam preview
[4:41:10 EST] by
~~
Rushian
HomeLAN Fed is the latest site to post a preview of EA & DICE's upcoming Vietnam-themed shooter, Battlefield: Vietnam. Clippage: Players of BF: 1942 will feel right at home in Battlefield: Vietnam as they will still get to pick from a number of player classes; the typical grunt assault class, the sniper class, the engineer class (helpful for fixing up vehicles) and anti-vehicle (helpful for destroying vehicles). Weapons for these classes range from the rifles (M-16s and AK-47) to sniper rifles and anti-tank weapons that look and act mostly like their real life counterparts.Sounds like it'll be another huge hit.
