PC Gamer reviews [7:16:22 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (1)
I just got my June 2003 copy of PC Gamer, and it has reviews of both nFusion's Line of Sight: Vietnam, and Pterodon & Illusion's Vietcong.

Line of Sight clocks in at 73%, getting praise for its environments and fun factor for the price, while Vietcong scores a slightly lower 70%, where it's praised for authentic portrayal of the Vietnamese jungle, but getting knocks for slow gameplay.

Vietcong review [6:59:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at GameBiz have posted a review of Pterodon & Illusion's Vietcong: U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam, scoring it at 84% overall.

VC review

Here's some of the good stuff:
There are 20 missions in all, with most missions having you trudge through dense jungle, wading through rivers, across rice paddies, helicopter insertions deep into the jungle, and hunting down the enemy through tunnels. Going down into VC tunnels only armed with a silenced pistol, the tunnels a web of booby traps and dead ends, the deeper the tunnels go down, the darker and more dangerous they get. Other missions include escort missions and covert operations missions. Every mission has objectives you hit and the objectives change as the mission progresses which require you to make split second decisions.

Raven Shield review [9:36:36 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Battle-Fields.com have posted a review of RedStorm Montreal and UbiSoft's latest tactical shooter, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, where is clocks in at a solid 90%. Here's a clip:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is one of life’s sayings that can apply just as much to the virtual world as the real world. R6 fans shall be most pleased to hear that RvS’s gameplay follows the same fundamental lines as its predecessors; the player controls between one and four teams as they storm beautifully crafted locations to eliminate terrorists, and possibly rescue hostages. The usual realism elements are still there (with some improved); your aiming reticule expands as your move and/or hold down the trigger, movement decreases if wounded, flashbangs really disorientate etc.
In other RS news, a new 'official' MP map entitled "Zen", has been released, created by Amon, who was a Raven Shield level designer. Grab it from Raven Shield Platoon.

[Update]: There's another review at the FiringSquad (76%). Good read for a laugh.

If you've been dying to get more multi-player mappage in Raven Shield, then look no further than the Radeon(tm) Rumble! Winners have been announced and you can download the map pack.

Here's hoping that single-player versions of these maps will be released. It's always interesting to see how the new A.I. works on old maps from Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear.

Vietcong review [12:44:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at AVault have posted a review of Pterodon Studio's & Illusion Softworks' Vietcong: U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam, awarding it with 3 1/2 stars.

    Vietcong review

Here's a snip on some of the AI:
Squad AI, much like the voice acting, ranges from intelligent and direct to woefully inept excursions in frustration. For the most part, squad mates follow orders and tag along behind you searching for action. Nhut, your point man, is the person gamers will interact with the most. As an expert on the area, Nhut will often lead the team through the terrain and point out enemy positions. By watching Nhut carefully, players can gain insight to traps and snares as well. In other missions, players will have a difficult time moving between waypoints without Nhut’s aid, which becomes a major problem when the scripting gets broken and you are forced to reload missions. At other times, squad mates are too easily left behind wandering through terrain while Hawkins moves on to engage the enemy.

Chrome preview [8:54:04 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ELiTeD.net has posted a swanky preview of U.S. publisher Strategy First and developer Techland's upcoming sci-fi tactical shooter, Chrome.

    Chrome preview

Here's a bit on the weapon loadouts:
The weapon loadout lets you choose which weapons you want to take with you. Mind you all of the weapons were not available to choose from, but many appropriate to the mission were. You can also let the computer choose the set up for you. The amount you can carry is varied. It isn't by weight, but represented by empty slots (see pic below). So far I have played with a few pistols, sniper rifle, and a couple of automatics. They shoot nice and recoil realistically. The sniper rifle is by far my favorite. Health, grenades, ammo, and binoculars are other handy items to tote around. You can also search the dead's body and take their weapons and items as long as you have the capability to carry the load.
The game is currently slated for release in June.

In other Chrome news, Hanna from Techland sent along a little news bit saying that Chrome is currently the third most popular game over at GameSpot, based on information requests. (Edit: it's now in the #2 spot...)

Medal of Honor Breakthrough expansion [16:07:12 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
EA posted a press release announcing a second Medal of Honor: Allied Assault expansion, entitled Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough. An excerpt:
Created by EALA and developed by TKO Software, Inc., the new expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Medal of Honor Allied Assault, takes players from the sands of North Africa to the heart of Italy in the struggle to defeat the Third Reich. Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough is planned for release on the PC in fall 2003.

As U.S. Army Sergeant John Baker, players join the battle at Kasserine Pass in North Africa, race to capture Messina in Sicily, and finally repel the German army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. Armed with a new arsenal of weapons, players will fight alone and with squad mates as they rush to stop the Axis powers.

The multiplayer game has been enhanced with the addition of Liberation Mode. In this mode, defeated players must be rescued by surviving teammates to continue the fight. In addition, players can drive tanks, artillery spotters can call in artillery strikes, and minesweepers can defuse mines. Players can also choose from American, British, Italian, and German skins in all multiplayer modes.
TKO's best known developer is Justin Chin, who headed the Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II team at Lucasarts.

[Update]: To The Game has posted some concept art to check out.

Battlefield Vietnam? [22:11:54 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (2)
The guys at GamespyDaily posted an article on how their search of the US Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) revealed that Battlefield: 1942 developer Digital Illusions in February trademarked the name Battlefield Vietnam for a PC computer game project. Article excerpt:
Could this be the official sequel to Digital Illusion's ultra popular action game series, Battlefield 1942? One would think so, but neither Electronic Arts nor Digital Illusions have made any public comments on the name, so mark it as "unconfirmed rumor" for the time being.

Söldner: Secret Wars Developer Diary [9:59:59 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
The guys at The Wargamer have a new Söldner: Secret Wars Developer Diary entry posted, about character models in the upcoming special forces shooter. One of its more promising features is the ability to customize each soldier right down to the hat or helmet he wears. An excerpt:
Usually artists "just" create a soldier and texture it, that's it. Well, our crazy designer had this funny idea that he wanted to make the soldiers modifyable. Well, our artists freaked out, the amount of work attached to this simple idea is staggering.

We had to divide the soldier into parts, and make them all interchangeable. As well as this the animations have to work with all combinations to give you an idea why our artists nearly killed the designer.
Page 2 of the article explains how to download the open souce physics engine they use, to get a taste of how the game works. Later, the article reveals that a first person view option has been added (it is 3rd person by default, and playable in either view).

LOS: Vietnam review [7:50:16 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Keeping the Vietnam gaming news flowing, DailyGame.net has posted a review of nFusion's Line of Sight: Vietnam, where it winds up with a 79% overall.

    LOS:Vietnam review

    Here's a clip:
In the same vein as the Rainbow Six series and myriad other military shooters, you’ll also be able to command and control a teammate on most missions, although in Line of Sight this involve a little less strategy than most games, simply because you have a smaller team and need to focus more on stealthy gameplay than squad-based tactics. Your mates will generally do a pretty good job at covering your back, as well, which significantly reduces the amount of babysitting you need to do. Now if they would just follow your lead a little better and not get hung up with occasional pathing issues…

VietCong review [7:39:46 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The gang at Gaming Nexus have posted a review of Pterodon & Illusion Softworks' Vietcong, scoring it at an 81%.

    Vietcong review

Here's a bit to start you off:
The game is broken up into a wide variety of missions ranging from your general run-and-gun jungle missions, claustrophobic indoor missions that take place in tunnels and steal-like missions where you must dispatch of your foes without making a peep. Without a doubt the straightforward action scenes are the highlight of this title. One moment you’re traversing through the jungle with your squad mates, the sound of birds are chirping all around you and all sun peers brilliantly through the trees. Then suddenly a few gunshots are heard and the sounds of chaos erupt all around you. You hit the dirt as you’re ambushed by a group of VCs, trying desperately to avoid the bullets that are whizzing over your head.
Good stuff.. check out the rest.

Call of Duty Web site launches [12:19:16 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
Activision and Infinity Ward (a new developer formed by 22 members of 2015's Medal of Honor: Allied Assault development team) launched a teaser Web site for Call of Duty, their upcoming WWII, squad-focused game. The site offers screenies and an overview of the game. An excerpt:
Play through the chaos of battle as part of a well-trained squad, that lays down covering fire and pulls its wounded to safety. In addition to authentic squad movements and tactics, each soldier's distinct personality and training comes out on the battlefield.

No one soldier or nation single-handedly won the war. For the first time, Call of Duty captures the war from multiple perspectives, through the eyes of American, British and Russian soldiers. Battle through 24 missions spanning 4 interconnected historical campaigns. Take on mission objectives ranging from sabotage and all-out assault to stealth, vehicle combat and rescue.

The folks at GameZone have posted a quickie review of nFusion Interactive's Line of Sight: Vietnam, where it scores a 75% overall. Here's some of the juice:
You have quite an assortment of about 13 weapons to carry out your missions. Some you start out with, others you may find or acquire from the dead. You have a weight allowance so you can't carry everything. You can use knives, AK 47, SKS carbine, CAR 15, M-21 sniper rifle, SVD sniper rifle, Pump action shotgun, M-79 Grenade Launcher, M-60 Light machine gun, RPD; Rocket propelled grenades, LAW, .45 auto and the 9mm Tokarov. Needless to say there is enough weaponry to choose from.

Deadly Dozen 2 unofficial 2.38 patch [17:20:23 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
nFusion released an unofficial 2.38 patch for Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theater that, among other things, improves netcode and adds mid-level respawn points near completed primary objectives (as in Line of Sight: Vietnam) in cooperative and mission-based multiplayer. Read about it in this nFusion forums announcement. An excerpt on installation:
This patch won't affect any mods/maps you have installed, BUT if you do have a mod installed that changes one of the files the patcher needs to patch, it may not install correctly or it may even revert the file back to its original form.

If in doubt, uninstall the game, delete the leftover directory, then reinstall the game then the 2.20 to 2.38 patch. That will mean you have a "clean" 2.38 version that you can mod to your heart's content.
View the full list of changes here. Grab the file here.

Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield review [15:01:36 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
The guys at Blue's News mentioned a review of Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield at Multiplay UK, which gave it an enthusiastic 9.5/10 rating. An excerpt:
Overall, Raven Shield is the best yet of the Rainbow Six series. Some may argue it is more of the same, just with a better engine, but many would reply, "So? It’s what we want!" In my opinion, "If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!" comes into play here, and I would gladly recommend Raven Shield to anyone who is a fan of good first-person shooters.

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down tops PC sales charts [0:32:12 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
According to a Reuters article about war-themed games selling well, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down has topped the PC sales charts for two consecutive weeks. An excerpt:
For the week ending April 5, NovaLogic's "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down" topped the list of best-selling PC games as compiled by research firm The NPD Group, the second week in a row it was the best-selling game.
[Update]: Also mentioned in the article is that SCI (and Pivitol Games I'd imagine) is working on a sequel to the somewhat disappointing Conflict Desert Storm, but truth be told, they planned on a sequel even before CDS had even shipped..

Operation Flashpoint 2 confirmed [21:34:28 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
Codemasters today confirmed plans for Operation Flashpoint 2, with the setting and theme to be revealed at the E3 expo, which runs May 14-16 in Los Angeles. It set up an Operation Flashpoint 2 teaser Web site where fans can register to receive development updates.

The press release mentions some details:
Operation Flashpoint 2 is in design and development at Bohemia Interactive Studio, the Prague-based creators of the original title, and will launch late in 2004 for PC. Focusing on another theatre of modern-historical warfare, Operation Flashpoint 2 will continue the title’s reputation as the ultimate military gaming experience.

Marek Spanel, Operation Flashpoint’s Project Leader at Bohemia Interactive Studio says: “We have great plans and massive ambition for Operation Flashpoint 2 but, for the moment, we are not revealing specific details of its content and gameplay. Following the success of the original game, it’s great to be working with Codemasters on the sequel and we are confident it’ll become another major landmark in PC gaming.”
[Update]: Rumor mill has it that it's probably a Vietnam War game, including pointing out that the Operation Flashpoint 2 teaser site uses an image identical to one at The Vietnam War site.

LOS:Vietnam editing tools released [7:45:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
At long last, nFusion has released the editing tools for Line of Sight: Vietnam to allow users to make maps and missions for the game. Here's the rip:
Its an 11MB file. I decided to make it a little easier on you guys so I included the unzipped objects.za file in here too, so you can easily import new objects to maps. All the tools are the latest versions, and the documentation has been updated.

To install just unzip into your game directory (nworld.exe should end up in the same directory as vietnam.exe). Documentation is in the docs/ subdirectory.
Grab the file here. Hopefully we'll see some great new missions to play..

[Update]: I've updated the LOS files section with a few more missions. Check 'em out..

DF: Black Hawk Down review & contest [17:02:14 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at EuroGamer sent word that they've posted a review of Novalogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, where it scores a 70%.

    BHD review

    A clip:
Mission types are surprisingly varied, from chopper-to-rooftop assaults and nighttime stealth raids, to air and ground-based vehicular attacks which are like on-rails shooting sections in which you man a mounted machine gun. Usually, one single mission will encompass a mixture of these different dynamics, and it lends the action a very fluid, on-the-fly feel despite a strictly linear progression and a scripted approach to much of the combat.
EuroGamer is also running a contest where you can enter to win some great goodies, including the game, the book and a hat. The contest is open to European residents only. Head on over for the details.

Line of Sight: Vietnam review [4:54:41 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
While waiting for some (ANY!!) news on H&D 2, the guys over at the unofficial Hidden & Dangerous 2 website have posted a review of nFusion's Line of Sight: Vietnam, and scored it at a solid 9 / 10.

    LOS:V review

    Here's a healthy chunk:
There’s no doubt that the star of LOS is nFusion’s very realistic Jungle environment, Pacific Theater did a great job of creating a believable setting and LOS raises the standard further. The enhanced engine utilises DirectX 9 features, which not only gives the game a noticeable performance boost (approx 10 fps using similar settings) but also improves the graphics throughout. Huge palm trees cast long shadows over dense swaying undergrowth; the maps are covered in steep wooded hills and rocky valleys.

It’s the dense (even more so than DD:PT) & sometimes claustrophobic nature of the vegetation that make the game so challenging, there were times when the compass pointer would tell me which way to go and I would start looking for an alternative. Although you can move quietly brushing past taller vegetation can give your position away, but the same can work in your favour. You hear most enemies react to you making too much noise long before you see them, and then it’s a case of listening for their approach before you even set eyes on them.
A patch is in the works to fix some minor game issues; stay tuned..

Vietcong reviews / trailer [0:19:16 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
As promised, GameSpot has now posted their full review of VietCong and scored it with a 7.9 / 10.

    VC review

    Here's a sample:
Enemy forces, meanwhile, will always fight from behind cover, and they do a fine job of making themselves difficult to spot. They are tenacious and tend to have superior numbers, and they seem more brave than foolhardy. They'll retreat if injured and will keep their heads down when under fire. Realistic tactics work against them. When the rest of your squad is pinned down by embedded VC forces, often you can take the initiative and flank the enemy, catching them completely off guard for a satisfying victory. At other times, you'll be caught off guard yourself, either by enemy fire or by booby traps.
[Update]: Another review can be found at Gamer's Depot (4 / 5 stars).

[Update]: If you still need convincing to get the game, Tiscali has posted the Vietcong final trailer (7 MB, DivX), showing off some more cool footage from the game.

Vietcong stuff [6:22:40 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Telefragged has posted a review of Pterdon & Illusion Softworks' Vietnam-era shooter, VietCong, and scored it with an 89% overall.

    Vietcong review

    Here's some clippage:
After each completed mission, you will find yourself back at your bunker, where you can head out to practice shooting at the range, read up on the intelligence you picked up on the field, or start the next mission. The intel you pick up will go into a few files, and the game even writes a journal for you (although it is always the same, no matter how you complete the missions) as you go - complete with photos and drawings. It adds up to a very complete atmosphere that makes you feel more like you are there than most war-based FPS games.
Good stuff; check out the rest.

[Update]: There also a Vietcong interview over at WorthPlaying, and another review at MyGamer (96%).

[Update]: The Czech VC fansite has posted complete list of the SP missions and a list of console commands. (Thx again, Blue's News.)
