Full Spectrum Warrior preview [23:49:28 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
EuroGamer has popped up a preview of Pandemic's military strat game, Full Spectrum Warrior, based on the XBox version.

Here's a snip:
The missions we see involve teams - each including a grenadier, an automatic rifle, a normal rifle and a team leader - covering each other as they move through cities shooting people in the head. And getting shot in the head. When your boys do the killing, it's with gung-ho explosions and bodies flying through the seared air. When a soldier gets capped, it's in full slow motion with groaning, close-up, claret-spilling, tear jerking, heartstring-pulling, hawk-loving sincerity.
Sweet screenshots too.

Brothers in Arms goodies [14:27:59 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (1)
Saw two items on Gearbox Software & UbiSoft's upcoming WWII squad shooter Brothers in Arms.

First up, Gamespot has posted a great preview of the game, along with some equally great screenshots. Here's a snipperoo:
As a squad leader, you'll command up to two fire teams, each of which can consist of up to three soldiers. Army doctrine dictates that one fire team serves as the assault element; these soldiers are armed mainly with submachine guns and grenades, and their job is to close with and destroy the enemy. The other fire team serves as the base-of-fire element; armed with heavier weapons like Browning automatics, these soldiers provide suppressing fire to keep the enemy pinned down while the assault team maneuvers to flank them. The Army calls this tactic "fire and maneuver," and it's been the cornerstone of infantry operations for decades.
    Sounds sweet.

Next up, HomeLAN Fed has posted an interview with Gearbox's Randy Pitchford, where they talk about some of the research that went into the game, and the background of the company.

Brothers in Arms announced [1:29:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
After much teasing, Gearbox Software and UbiSoft have announced Brothers in Arms a squad-based WWII shooter set for release by the end of this year. While Medal of Honor and Call of Duty already covered the same ground (as did nFusion's Deadly Dozen series..), BiA is set to include squad-based elements to the gameplay. Here's the part we're interested in:
As part of the leadership role, Baker has the ability to command elements, which are your fellow squad members, ordering them to attack a target, move to a position or follow him. [...] Issuing these orders is context sensitive, so simply highlighting an enemy location instructs the element to attack, while aiming on a wall will request the element to move to the location and take cover. Your AI-led squad will automatically engage the enemy, taking the appropriate cover. More than utilizing the terrain by ducking behind walls or leaning around corners, squad mates will cover each other, with one soldier taking shots at the enemy while another reloads.
Check out the preview at UGO for more details and a few screenshots of the game in action.

Soldner: Secret Wars Fixes [9:15:47 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you're like me, you haven't been able to play a single online game of Soldner: Secret Wars in the last week and a half since it had been released. Well, two bits of advice allowed me to finally overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles to a fun session of fragging that this "multi-player beta demo" and its silent developers were posing. I extend them to you, free of charge!
    1) Makes sure jwdcom.exe in the SoeldnerBetaDemo/Portal/ folder is given firewall permissions, in addition to the Soeldner executable. If that doesn't help, give every .exe file in every sub-folder of the Soeldner demo firewall permissions. I know it sounds extreme, but if I were you I'd choose to be an extremist in exchange for the daily frustration of a demo that won't demonstrate.

    2) In SoeldnerBetaDemo/Game/Bing/Config you'll find a Config.ini file. Edit that so that "netrate" reads 10000 instead of 5000. If you have 1Mb cable, setting it as high as 100000 doesn't seem to hurt anything.
Hope to frag you on the battlefield!

*Call of Duty ex-pack coming [1:25:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
We all knew this was coming, and so, Evil Avatar has posted the press release announcing Call of Duty: United Offensive. Here's some of the dirt:
Call of Duty: United Offensive's single player campaign allows gamers to experience more of WWII's most crucial and legendary conflicts, including The Battle of the Bulge, The Battle of Kursk and the invasion of Sicily, as they fight through more than ten intense all-new maps. The game features new weapons, character abilities, weather effects and explosions, adding even more realism to the chaotic battlefields.

Additionally, Call of Duty: United Offensive expands on the popular multiplayer experience of Call of Duty, offering new multiplayer maps that set the stage for tank combat, as well as tank-and-foot-soldier combined arms action, providing the ultimate battle of Axis vs. Allies. Fans will also enjoy three new multiplayer gameplay modes, including Tank Battle, Capture the Flag and Domination - where squads must take control of key locations while preventing enemy troops from advancing.
Yeah, it wasn't at all tactical, but it was a fun WWII shooter and I played thru it twice.. I'll be looking forward for some more action when the ex-pack hits in the fall.

[Update]: GameSpot has 2 new screenshots to show off. (Thanks Blue's News.)

As a prelude to the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (formerly subtitled "Oblivion Lost") later this year, read Elena's pictorial description of what it is like to speed her Kawasaki Ninja through the uninhabited, irradiated region in Russia called "The Dead Zone". "Welcome to the world with no future", as it says at the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. website.

Soldner MP Demo News Update [19:51:35 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you've downloaded and installed the Soldner MP Demo then you probably figured out that so far it is a flopping albatross. Encore, the game's publisher, apologizes that they could not possibly have anticipated the demand. Is it just me or are these fellows thinking like newbs to the industry?

After laboring away for hours at so-called work-arounds without success, I'm going to go back to playing Far Cry. So far, this demo has been nothing but an elaborate game of paper dolls. (Not that I play with paper dolls, of course...)

[Update]: Seems the 3DGamers version was corrupt, but a batch of mirrors for the fixed demo can be found over at Planet Soldner.

Soldner demo soon? / preview [2:28:45 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's News is running a Soldner banner that proclaims "Download the Demo Today", but when I click on the link, it just goes to the download section on the Soldner Website... I searched on publisher JoWood's website and came up blank there too...

While we're waiting for more info, the guys at Action Trip have posted a preview of the game, based on some hand's on with the MP beta. Here's a snip:
he game is played from a third-person perspective by default, but you can switch to first person at any time. The controls were easy to use and familiar, so it didn't take me long to get in the groove of things. Regarding the visuals, I especially enjoyed the use of pixel shaders and the relatively detailed environments. The characters are mostly well animated, and the objects in the background (like buildings, trees and such) are destructible, looking devastated and blackened after a fierce gunfight.
The game is set for a May 4th release in the U.S. and a May 27th release in Europe.
