World War II Online Convention [17:27:19 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
To stoke the fires of publicity surrounding this weekend's World War II Online Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, I have compiled a list of in-game videos.

It should be noted that a large portion of this in-game footage was captured in older builds of World War II Online on systems with lower game settings, so special effects and graphics may not be as impressive as you can experience in the present build on your own system. The latest DivX and Xvid codecs may be required to play all of these videos.

If a screenshot is worth a thousand words, then a live-action video must be worth a million...

Chrome SpecForce website launches [13:42:23 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Techland sent word that they've launched the official Chrome SpecForce website. Here's the goods:
The latest title developed at Poland-based Techland, SpecForce is an innovative SciFi shooter, in which the player becomes a SpecForce operative, who must, along with the rest of his unit, face the threat of interplanetary terrorist factions. The struggle takes place in a complex landscape, where futuristic urban environments intertwine with dense and uncharted natural territory.

Some of the SpecForce official home page features include never before seen product details, latest screenshots, and video clips. Fans will also find a detailed timeline, showcasing the events that preceded SpecForce’s storyline. The first part of the sometimes controversial vision of the future is available now.

Aside from information abut the game itself, the new home page hosts an exclusive section devoted to SpecForce’s map editor. Here fans can not only find the fine details on how to use the map editor, but also download add-on maps for SpecForce’s multiplayer mode. After SpecForce’s release, this section will also double as a fan-driven file exchange.

Techland promises to regularly introduce new details about SpecForce’s multiple features.
Head on over for more.

+ fixed bug where if you ever fail a mission due to killing a civilian the campaign resets even if you later win
+ no longer show the reticle when sniping
+ fixed bug in DM where end of rounds (and /restartgame) would screw everything up
+ increase grenade damage radius a bit

Elite Warriors: Vietnam review [12:50:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PC.IGN is the latest site to put up a review of Bold Games and nFusion Interactive's Elite Warriors: Vietnam, where it again scores 50%. Here's a snip:
Movement isn't nearly as nail-biting of an experience as it could be, since the enemy AI is generally stationary. When you hear gunfire close by, and you're an armed service member defending a camp, the typical reaction doesn't involve standing around.
I dunno what game he was playing, but there've been plenty of times I've encountered enemies that have been alerted to my presense and have come seeking me out. And he spends a whole paragraph on how the default key config is awkward. Talk about nit-picking.. sheesh.. icon_rolleyes.gif I've had to remap the keys in every game I've ever played.. Jeez.

Chrome SpecForce update [13:35:49 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (4)
The folks from Techland sent word that they've released some multiplayer footage of thier upcoming sci-fi shooter SpecForce. Mirrors are up at 3D Gamers, FileFront, Gameguru Mania, and Worthplaying. (Thanks Blue's News for the links).

    Here's the PR:
SpecForce’s multiplayer mode boasts a diverse collection of game play types. Players can now strap themselves into a futuristic Power Armor, and use its multiple systems to introduce new tactical elements to the game.

Aside from a wide selection of weapons and equipment, players also have the option to man a diverse collection of multiple vehicles. Some of these include pursuit and two-seater off road vehicles, Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) and combat mech-like Walkers.

SpecForce hosts 4 unique multiplayer modes: Death Match, Team Death Match, Team Domination and Capture The Flag, each supporting up to 32 players. The game is bundled with an easy-to-use map editor.

Techland’s latest title is best described as a SciFi shooter, in which the player is drafted into an elite spec-ops unit in the future. Equipped with the latest tech tools and weapons, working alone, or as an integral part of his unit, he must face terrorist factions that threaten man kind. The arena – a vast landscape of both futuristic urban environments, and an uncharted territory dominated by nature. All SpecForce multiplayer maps have been created in association with popular on-line games clans.

SpecForce doesn’t have a rating yet. A “Mature” tag is expected, reflecting Techland’s previous shooter’s rating. The exact premiere date remains unspecified, but SpecForce is expected to ship in the late second quarter of 2005.

  • *Close Combat: First to Fight gone gold [10:52:32 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (2)
The PC version of Close Combat: First to Fight has gone gold and is heading to stores. No demo release is planned, alas. Here's the PR chatter:
New York, NY – April 19, 2005 – Close Combat: First to Fight has shipped and is currently available in retail stores across North America and Europe for PC. A version for the Xbox® videogame system from Microsoft was released on April 9th.

Players lead a four-man fire team of US Marines through the perils of modern urban combat in Beirut. Gamers can play through the campaign as either a single player or a co-op experience online or via LAN. In addition, gamers can go head-to-head in the fire team arena with as many as 8 players simultaneously competing.

Close Combat: First to Fight utilizes authentic Marine urban military doctrine, tactics and assets to save lives, take down insurgents and restore order. With direction from the US Marine Corps and a beautiful new engine from Destineer, Close Combat: First to Fight is as close as you can get on a computer or Xbox to being a Marine fire team leader in modern urban combat.

*Conflict: Global Terror preview(s) [7:42:21 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
PC.IGN has put up a tasty preview of Pivotal Games' upcoming title, Conflict: Global Terror.

Here's a bit on the squad control:
In true Conflict form, the gameplay centers around the four-man team. Orders can be given to the other members of the team and it's also possible to swap characters on the fly. Want to know just where the last man is? A couple of taps and he's under control. If players don't want to switch, then it's possible to give commands a little easier and faster this time with some context-sensitive orders.
I've slowly been warming up to the Conflict series over the years (tho, I'm still working thru CDS2), and this one looks to have all the right pieces in place. Release date is set for October.

[Update]: Another tiny preview (based on the PS2 version) can be found at 1Up.

Ghost Recon 2 for the PC canceled [6:08:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (1)
This comes as no surprise, but UbiSoft has decided not to port Ghost Recon 2 over to the PC (which by the look of things may not be such a bad deal). They do plan on bringing the game back for GR3. Here's some of the scoop from the article over at WorthPlaying:
This decision was not an easy one. We did not want to disappoint the loyal Ghost Recon fans, but we did not want to risk releasing a final product that did not meet their high expectations.

With the launch of Ghost Recon 3 planned for Winter 2005, significant human resources were needed to ensure the quality of the future instalment of the series, thus potentially jeopardizing the quality of either Ghost Recon 2 PC or Ghost Recon 3.

Giving Soldner a Second Chance: Worth a Look [10:27:08 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
I received a Soldner community e-mail from SSW-Academy, the new Soldner community representative. He had this to say:
You were interested in Soldner and maybe left it because there were several bugs? Because of this it's up to us (the community) to show you (as one of over 17,300 community members) that many things have been changed and modified!

Do you think Soldner is still buggy?

Do you think Soldner still has the crashes to desktop of the release version?
Do you think Soldner still has problems with hardware compatibility? (e.g., joysticks)
Do you think Soldner was a good idea with an awful realisation?

ABSOLUTELY WRONG ... THAT WAS THE PAST!

All this belongs to history. Wings worked hard together with the community and changed many details to make Soldner the game you (we) always wanted!

    Here are some changes:

  • all sounds recorded new (birds, water, wind, weapons...)

  • new graphic effects (infra-red vision, nightvision...)

  • new weapon ballistics (sniper, rocket launcher...)

  • airstrike function

  • advanced score system

  • new weapon systems (laser-guided bombs, camera-guided rockets)

  • new netcode (works fine with 50 players!)

  • new kits (scout kit, scuba kit...)

  • new maps (desert, coast...)
  • With the new Addon (Soldner Marine Corps) you will be able to buy many new vehicles, weapons... especially European equipment (Leopard, Challenger, Leclerc).

A new way to challenge your opponents is also opened: the way through the water! Now you can transport your troops with boats or fight with some scout boats equipped with gatling guns.

Without the addon but with the new patch you are able to test the new
weapons but you can't buy them at the terminals (someone else has to buy them for you!). So Wings is the first developer who will make all players (addon and non-addon) able to play together!

If you are interested in all the new features and possibilities, just
download the latest patch and give Soldner another try.

We (the community) wish to present you the new Soldner experience and we are no longer on our own! Several game magazines (especially the ones who give Soldner bad marks) tested the new addon and patch and have given them
ratings of about 80 percent and more!

PC Action: "Respect! I like the infantry fights in the woods and especially the tank battles on the desert maps. No bugs, advanced menusystem, more weapons and good maps make Soldner the game it should have always been! A funny multi-player game! We recommend this game to all multiplayer-shooter-fans. This buy will [pay for itself] itself! (80%)"

To convince you, we will show you what some old Soldner players of the first days think about the new Soldner. Here are some comments made by reactivated players:

Deadman: "yeah I'm back and can only say Soldner will really rock NOW! I play regularly from now on and have a lot of fun!"

[A-Team]Ridcully: "Wow! Like this Soldner should ever be and I wished it would be! There were some bugs, but every Online-shooter has some. A good match requires skill and luck and it will do a lot of fun!"

=FPC=Sonic: "My first impression of the addon was very positive, now many details looks finished and no longer half-made like before. This [is the] way the release version should have been!"

mystaka: "this is the best Soldner patch of all time, the most important aspect is, that there are no more lags. Before it was impossible for me to play the game! It's like an absolutely new game."

So, please, help us and do yourself a favour, install Soldner again and download the latest patch!

Like we say, we are the community, we won't lie to you! This mail was made by us for YOU!

Take a look at the UKW Soldner Marine Corps Video (approx. 60 Meg .zip, extract to approx. 90 Meg Windows Media Video) to see what you are waiting for.

WILL YOU GIVE SOLDNER A SECOND CHANCE? EVERYONE SHOULD GET A SECOND CHANCE!!!

See you soon on one of the Soldner servers!

    Greetz,
    SSW-Academy

    (Mail written by White-One, Gerdilein!)

Uziyahu is hosting a video of SWAT 4 single-player demo action, though it shows off weapons unlocked by a user-created mod. The video compares the shooters of "olden days" with SWAT 4. If you're not sure whether you want to spend your money on this title, definitely give this video a look.

Elite Warriors: Vietnam review [23:53:26 EST] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (3)
GameSpot has posted their review of nFusion Interactive's recently-released game, Elite Warriors: Vietnam, scoring it at a rather low 50%. Here's a clip:
As in nFusion's previous titles, you command a squad of up to four soldiers, each of whom is rated in several skill categories (such as stealth and a variety of weapon classes) that can be upgraded between missions. You control one character at a time, though you can freely switch between them at will. There are several basic commands that you can issue to the entire group. Instead of relying solely on hotkeys for these commands, the game introduces a handy quick-select radial menu, which is the only real improvement over the other titles in the series. There's also a new Brothers in Arms-esque overhead view that temporarily positions the camera above your squad and permits you to issue orders to members of the team individually.
I just don't think the reviewer 'got' the game.

Almost every part of the game has been re-worked or added to in some way (compared to LOSV). The campaign mode is a significant addition to the game, and adds a lot of randomness and replayability to the game. And if you don't want any of that, you can just play the single missions. It's the best of both worlds. As Peter Griffin would say "It's win freakin' win!"

Additionally, the radial command menu and the overhead mode are two more significant additions to the game, and both increase the tactical aspect of the game immensely. I never really use the overhead mode (and didn't in Brothers in Arms either), but I use the radial menu to direct my squad's actions constantly. It really makes the game a tactical squad shooter, and not 'just a shooter'. (And yes, the GS reviewer did like the radial menu.)

I think the real jist of it is that the small-time developer just doesn't get the credit they deserve. Had this same game been produced by a big-name house, it would easily get a higher score based on reputation alone, and that's a shame. I know nFusion worked long and hard on this title, and the game easily deserves a higher score.

If you haven't given it a listen in a while, Tactical Gaming Radio has lots of new shows, all of them catering to different musical preferences.

On the way is a Top 20 show based on whether the listeners have given each individual track the Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down in the Live365 Player. Also on the horizon are reviews of the old titles in the tactical first-person genre. If you want to talk up or talk down one of the classic tactical titles of yesteryear, record your opinions and then compress them to 128-bit .mp3 and send it to Uziyahu. Make sure to give the callsign by which other gamers know you.
