Misc. news
[19:00:22 EDT] by

Rushian
CPL Buddha sent word that this month's PC Gamer has Ghost Recon on the cover, plus some info on the game as well. I haven't yet received my copy of the mag, but I'll be sure to post more info once I do.. He also informs us that 'Navy SEALs' for the PS2 has been renamed SOCOM US Navy SEALs, and is due out in November, and it will possibly have a multiplayer component to it as well. And for all 2 of you who asked, that's the game featured in the 'Current Recon Photo' above. (Yeah, trick question since it was a PS2 game, and not a PC game.. |

H&D2 stuff
[19:21:52 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Whilst snooping around over at the unofficial Hidden and Dangerous 2 website, I saw some news of an image of the (presumed) H&D2 gamebox as was found on the Take 2 website. They also had news of 4 new renders (2 soldiers, 2 vehicles) over at Daily Telefrag, so scope those out as well. (Thanks to Andy B. who also alerted me to that fact.)

Medal of Honor preview
[4:59:50 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
As part of their E3 report, Firing Squad has posted a preview of EA & 2015's upcoming WWII shooter, Medal of Honor, which again recounts the Normandy beach landing and sniper town missions. Here's a snip on the Normandy mission: This scene is complete with pre-battle back and forth conversation between the NPCs, calling out orders and such, as the squad prepares for landing. Once on the beach, the real fight begins, as the player attempts to make his way up to the Nazi encampments. One of the more impressive aspects of this part of the mission is seeing just how much NPC action is going on all around. Machinegun fire and mortars decimate friendly soldiers as they attempt to breach the barbed wire fences, medics radio for help as they attend the wounded, and officers bark out orders, directing the attack. It certainly does a good job of conveying the magnitude and scale of such a historic battle.Hopefully we'll see some new info on the game soon. Thanks VE for the news..

Ghost recon preview
[4:43:44 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Quarter to Three has posted a 60-second preview of RSE's Ghost Recon. Here's how they kick it off: This is Red Storm's follow-up to the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series, which focused on small anti-terrorism squads. But Ghost Recon is about military actions, most of which take place outdoors and with hhardware like tanks prowling around. You lead three teams of up to eight men, but unlike the Rainbow Six games, there's no pre-planning phase. Instead, you give orders on the fly using an overhead map to assign waypoints to your different teams. Between missions, you allocate combat points among your soldiers to increase their skills. Red Storm is building Ghost Recon from a completely new engine geared to longer-range outdoor encounters.Check out the rest..

SimHQ tactical games report
[4:29:03 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at SimHQ have posted an E3 report of a few of the upcoming tactical games that will be released soon. The article includes info on Medal of Honor, Flashpoint, Soldier of Fortune 2, WWII Online, RS: Black Thorn, and Ghost Recon. Here's a snip on the NVG's to be found in Ghost Recon: Ghost Recon does do the best job of portraying Night Vision Goggles, in the opinions of both Chunx and myself. The coloring is just right, light sources flare brightly, and dark/shadowed areas are harder to see as they blend into each other. Plus, the display shows that grainy look that is just perfect for NVGs.The article really is a must-read for tactcal gamer fans and includes lot's of great info. Def check it out.. |

IGI second look
[17:57:20 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
In an interesting co-incidence, I just started re-playing Innerloop Studio's and Eidos' Project IGI this weekend, and now a second look at the game has been posted by Action Trip. Here's a clip: Yes, Project IGI had its problems - mainly the lack of a save game option (although, now that I'm playing the game, I kinda like the fact I can't save), and some very unintelligent artificial intelligence. Of course, one other thing worth a mention here is the lack of MP features… God almighty, this would've been one fun MP game. But I'm not writing this as a re-review of the game. What I wanted to say instead is that technically -- in terms of the code, physics (bar the silly jumping), and the eye-candy, Project IGI actually ranks very high amongst the similar type of shooters.I gotta say too, that the single-play game is indeed pretty good, but it could have been soooo much cooler if it had a multi-player component to it.

SoFII preview
[17:34:49 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Also at PCZone (and thanks to me), is a preview of Raven's military shooter, Soldier of Fortune 2. Here's a snip on the visuals: Walking through one ice-covered level in Northern Russia all that was missing was the crunch of the snow underfoot (which will doubtless be added at a later date). Dynamic lighting and shadowing all added to the realism however the icing on the cake was the single most realistic snowstorm in gaming history. Flakes fell sideways, down, back and forth, swirling around and about in a mad dance of precipitation. It may not sound like too much, but it's touches like this that help to drag the player from the real world and immerse him in that of the game.H&D and IGI had pretty decent snowstorms too, but then again, I'm a sucker for weather effects.

Ghost Recon preview
[14:08:26 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Newshound Andy B. let me know that PCZone has posted an excellent (as usual) preview of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, with typical Brittish wit. Here's a clip on the removal of the pre-planning phase: Something that takes us totally by surprise is that the developer has decided to completely remove the pre-planning stage of the game! What?! Isn't that like, integral? "There'll be no pre-game planning," says Jonathan, "We found that a lot of people considered the pre-game planning too laborious to do and so we streamlined it." Indeed. All commands issued to team members are now given in-game or "on the fly" as we're told. It operates in a similar way to the systems found in SWAT 3 and Hidden & Dangerous: pressing the space bar brings up a command HUD that allows you to issue orders directly to other team members who are only too happy to follow them to the letter. Everything now happens in real-time giving the game a more interactive and hands-on feel.I never did like the pre-planning in R6 games, and either used the default plans (RS and UO), or just set one waypoint, and then went along my merry way (R6 and EW). I highly doubt that being able to give orders on the fly is anything revolutionary, as the Spec Ops series allowed that since day 1..

Global Ops info
[13:48:00 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
FGN has posted a small article on Barking Dog Studios' upcoming game, Global Ops on what they learned from working on Counter-Strike beta 5, and how it will fit into Global Ops. Here's the meat of it: When we were offered the chance to work on CS we were already designing a multiplayer FPS so we had a long list of things we were interested in achieving in a multiplayer game. It took a lot of restraint to realize what made CS strong and what we could add to build on those strengths without trying to remake it into our vision. We tried to focus on relaying information to the players with help messages, clearing up mission objectives, reworking code to make it more stable for the future and adding some solid new content to extend the interest in the game. Thanks again Andy B. for the news.. |

More on Ghost Recon
[21:24:07 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
More news on Redstorm's upcoming Ghost Recon has surfaced on GhostRecon.net. First up, they have some more details on the 'threat sensor' that the game will feature. Here's some of the goods: Each section has a cone that it shoots out to detect things. It has no concept of range or # of threats in that area. There could be 10 bad guys or 1, it doesn't know or care. Also the threat may be 10 meters or 300 meters away and it could be on one edge of that cone or the other. Obviously at 300 meters that could be a discrepancy of more than 30 meters and depending on the terrain that could be quite a bit.Sounds a bit complicated on paper (err, or 'on monitor' as the case may be..), but once we see it in-game, I'm sure it'll make total sense on how it works.. Also, there's some clarification on the dedicated MP servers from RSE's G. Stelmack: "...keep in mind, that while we are including dedicated servers, you will still be able to just host a game like you did in Rogue or Rainbow6. The inclusion of dedicated servers does not mean we will not include a more traditional hosting system."Thanks again to Andy B. for the pointer..

RS: Black Thorn info page
[18:21:16 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The boys over at Rogue Spear Retreat have posted a RS: Black Thorn info page that covers everything that's currently known about the title coming this fall from Redstorm and UbiSoft. Here's a snip from the features section: * Black Thorn is a stand-alone product and does not require a copy of the original Rogue Spear.Prob another cash cow for Redstorm.. The 'hook' for this game will be the ability to 'replay' actual events from history instead of just fictional missions. I did like the real-world locations of the Eagle Watch mission pack, so if BT is anything like that, it should be fun. Only 10 missions tho, so it'll prob be over way too quick. Redstorm always has been pretty stingy with the number of missions they've given us in any R6 title tho..

BT & GR release dates

Rushian
My man on the inside over at EB, CPL Buddha, dropped off some email letting me know that the EB computer has Redstorm's RS: Black Thorn and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon both set for an October 2nd release date. I guess they're banking on people picking up both titles at the same time.. Personally, I'm iffy on BT but I'll most likely buy GR on the spot, asuming the demo plays well..

CIA Operative review
[17:09:03 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
I noticed over at Blue's that The Armchair Empire has posted a review of Trainwreck Studio's Quake1-powered shooter, CIA Operative: Solo Missions, where they slap it with a 3.9 out of 10. Here's a clip from when they were being kind: The gun bob is the best I’ve see in a first-person shooter. CO runs on yesterdays hardware, which means you don’t need a colossal gaming rig to run it. It’s a budget title for the casual gamer. The sound and music is all right – nothing too annoying. Best barrel explosions ever! Pop a barrel marked as explosive and a shockwave (just like that of the Death Star blowing up in the Special Editions of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi) blasts out, crumpling any nearby bad guys.

RS: Black Thorn preview
[15:19:31 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Fansite Pie's Tactics has put up a preview of Redstorm's Rainbow Six: Black Thorn, based on what they learned at E3. The article includes a full weapons list, and a list of 5 MP maps. Here's a clip to start ya off: The storyline focuses on a group of tangos that is performing "copycat" terrorist acts, that is, trying to recreate terrorist actions from the past 50 years. Black Thorn will allow you to conquer these missions using current day tactics and weapons. The article has 10 screenshots up from the UbiSoft press kit (that you've probably already seen), and a Bink-format video (26.5 MB, Bink player required) as well, which I know I haven't seen yet.. Ghost Recon preview
[15:05:17 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Andy B. pointed me in the direction of a Ghost Recon preview over at GameSpy, where they talk with Stuart White, the game's producer. Here's a clip on what's new: Probably the biggest change is that players can now change their plans on the fly," he said. "In the other games, you had to do all your planning in advance and couldn't change it. Now, you can modify your tactics any time you want or even begin the mission with no planning at all."Yip! The game will allow you to finally go prone.. More great stuff in the preview, check it out!

Another MoH preview
[2:11:50 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GamesDomain has popped up a preview of EA and 2015's game in progress, Medal of Honor, and a good one it is. Here's a snip on the visuals: Some nice touches demonstrated in this level included the rain effects, the ability to demolish entire buildings in the "highly destructible interactive environment," and ladder climbing being represented realistically for the first time ever in a FPS game (instead of sliding up, your view jerks as you ascend and hands grab at the rungs). |

CIA Operative review
[16:58:31 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
I didn't know the game was out yet, (I was supposed to get a review copy from the developer..), but ActionTrip has posted a review of ValuSoft's CIA Operative. Here's a snip: Apart from this it mostly resembles Soldier of Fortune; as you first have to purge a subway station, and then move on to Russia, Bogotá and Iraq. The levels are full of civilians and there is a level where you are on a truck and being shot at which also reminded me of SoF, but you will hardly see as much violence and blood as you saw there.Keep in mind this is a budget title afterall. Thanks Blue's..

Global Ops preview
[2:14:03 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot takes a look at Barking Dog Studio's LithTech-powered tactical shooter, Global Operations, set for release later this year. Here's a clip: Realism is what draws many players to games of this sort and the developers are working hard to get all the details right for Global Operations. There are lots of real-world weapons to try out, and they're all customizable in the pre-game menu. Depending on the weapon, it's possible to add a scope, laser sight, silencer, under-the-barrel shotguns, or even grenade launchers. The preview also has some concept sketches, weapon renders, and a new screenshot or two as well..

OFP preview/shots

Another day, another Operation Flashpoint preview, this time over at fansite OpFlash.com. Here's a snip: The full story, features over 50 missions on 4 different islands. You start out on a training island, you have to bust your ass to your commanding officer's orders and do it quickly. Very nice immersion here, gives a nice idea on how the game is going to be played out. As the story progresses, you find your way onto other islands, doing different things. You may have to guard a small town, or rescue your commander who was trapped in an ambush.. only to be ambushed yourself. The preview also includes 10 screenshots (which I posted about yesterday..) |

NovaLogic on the skids?
[20:29:26 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
File this as a rumor, but Land-Warrior.com is reporting the NovaLogic may be in some trouble. Here's the rip: Don't get your hopes up for a DF4, at least not this year. Things are looking down for Novalogic. According to sources, NovaLogic Systems is dead, Kerry Allan was released last Tuesday. The general feeling is that if Necrocide doesn't succeed it could kill off the company. There is some work starting on Commanche 4, it may save the company if the AI and gameplay are solid and smart. No mention of Delta Force 4, Landwarrior is beginning to be explained as "a separate product line".Hmm, it'd be too bad if NL closes up shop.. While their sims were always in the 'light weight' category, they were always fun, and competition never hurts either.. And I'm sure we'll see some sort of statement from NL soon to refute all of this.

MoH:AA preview
[20:06:46 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot UK has posted a preview of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, based on what they saw at E3 (of course). Here's a snip of the action: As a German shell blows up the landing craft next to you, your own boat comes to a halt and the ramp falls down. Within a second the guys standing at the front are blown away and you see the chaos ahead of you - dozens of bullet tracers sweep past you and an artillery barrage will scare you witless as you try to use the tank traps set into the beach as cover from the relentless hail of fire. The noise is simply unbelievable - this is Saving Private Ryan or Enemy at the Gates in computer game form, make no mistake.Tactical? Well, partially.. Cinematic? Hell yea! Be sure to check out their screenshot gallery that includes a few new (and familiar) shots. Thanks Blue's News.

Ghost Recon preview/movie
[19:52:34 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Dunno how I missed this, but PC.IGN has posted a preview of RedStorm / UbiSoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon based on what they saw at this year's E3. Here's how they sum it up: The game is built on the skeleton of the Rogue Spear engine but a ton of improvements have been made. The environments (most missions are located outside this time around) are fantastic. Lots of hills and trees characterized the levels we saw. The character models and effects are also slightly improved over the previous titles. We love the series and we're very curious as to how this new direction will work out for the team. We'll bring you more information between now and the game's Fall release.Included are the 10 previously seen shots from the game, and a camcorder movie (only 1.3 MB) from E3, which is actually pretty clear, but short. Def worth a look.. In related news, Rogue Spear Retreat has posted their own movie (45 MB) from E3. The movie is also in DivX AVI format and runs 19 minutes.

C&C: Renegade previews
[14:39:40 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Blue's pointed me in the direction of 2 new C&C: Renegade previews to hit the net. First up is a pretty in-depth preview at E3 Command. Here's a snip on the rather unique multiplayer aspect of the game: While the single player is definitely appealing, by far the most interesting aspect of this game for me is the multiplayer. Of course, like any good FPS game, deathmatch and capture the flag will be involved in some form or another. As I mentioned last year, and I'm sure many of you are aware, there is a much more interesting multiplayer aspect to be included. There is a actual Command and Conquer mode. The AI plays C&C against itself, using the buildings in the map you are in. Buildings function just like they did in the C&C RTS game (as they do in single player of Renegade), but players will fight as single soldiers in a greater battle against each other. The other preview is up at pc.ign, and includes this tasty bit: The best example we saw was an enemy engineer running back and forth to repair two turrets on a nearby beach. The turrets were blasting away at a ship just offshore. Once Mike took out the engineer, he laid some C4 at the base of the two turrets. The turrets blew up and the ship was allowed to come in closer to shore. There the ship unloaded a tank. Mike climbed into the tank and took off to wreak more havoc on the Nod base.I def like games where I feel there's a larger war going on. Op Flashpoint will also be like that. |

SoF 2 preview
[21:55:13 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
I know Soldier of Fortune 2 is probably 'just a shooter', but it does have some tactical and squad elements to it, so I figured I'd post this, and what the heck, news is really flowing now. And the game does use real-world weaps as well. Anyway, PC.IGN has posted a preview of the game. Here's a clip on the tactical aspect of the game: Combat in Soldier of Fortune 2 will stress more squad-based tactics than the previous game. Although it's still a pure action game, there will be several operations where you'll go in as a team with other AI controlled mercenaries. Instead of barking orders and giving away your position, your companions will give you silent hand signals to let you know what their next move is.The preview includes some pretty wicked facial renders, some new (and old) screenshots, and 3 movies of the game in action. (CamCorder and direct feed versions.) I'm also intrigued by the game's purported random mission generator mode, something I've wanted since the days of Spec Ops 1 (April 1998 if you're keeping score at home.

R6:BT & GR previews
[15:56:41 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Following up yesterday's screenshot galleries, EuroGamer has posted 2 mini-previews of Rainbow 6: Black Thorn & Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. For BT they confirm it's a stand-alone mission pack for Rogue Spear, with missions based on real-world terrorist acts from recent history. Sounds interesting actually. And if nothing else it's 'more missions' for RS.. Ghost Recon seems to be the more interesting title, so here's a snip from the GR preview: Ghost Recon on the other hand is a brand new game for Red Storm, featuring an impressive looking new graphics engine, a new interface, heads-up display and team control system, and an entirely new task force for you to serve in - the eponymous Ghosts.

Another Global Ops preview
[4:45:42 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
PC.IGN has posted an E3 preview of Global Ops, the team-based tactical shooter coming from Barking Dog Studios and Crave Entertainment and set for a Q4 release. Here's a clip on the weapons modeling: The ballistics model in the game is very, very complex, with physics programmed in for the various types of materials that bullets will hit in the game. Not only that, but it takes into account the speed at which the bullet is going when it hits the object, the type of gun that fired (of which there are 34), the type of ammunition that was in the gun, and the angle that the bullet entered the object.Sounds about right..

More on R6:BT & GR
[2:10:53 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
A quick trip to Pie's Tactics revealed all sorts of new info on RedStorm's (and UbiSoft's) 2 titles, R6: Black Thorn and Ghost Recon. Pie reports from E3 that Black Thorn is indeed a mission pack, and will probably also be able to run stand-alone, similar to Covert Ops. The game was developed by "a canadian UbiSoft team under the supervision of John Sonedecker." The real news is about Ghost Recon. Here's some real tasty info: Ghost Recon is still squad-based, but all of it is much more on-the-fly. There is no longer a planning phase in the single player games, and the current iteration uses a tactical map (switched from the standard view), allowing the user to create waypoints on-the-fly. Think of it as a more flexible system than in Tribes 2. By simply clicking on a units (either Alpha, Bravo, or Charlie), the player can direct squad movement through multiple waypoints. The waypoints allow for the same control elements as was found in the Rainbow Six planning phases. Each squad has two soldiers, for a total of six soldiers in a mission. A new in-game overlay display will pop-up which allows complete control of the individual soldiers - it even shows where they have been hit.Sounds very cool, as I'm much more of an 'outdoor arena, make it up on the fly'-type of guy, so this game looks to suit me just fine.

Myth II: Green Berets
[20:28:12 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
LOL! I just had to post this: Blue's pointed me in the direction of the new Myth II: Green Berets website that just went live. The game uses the Myth II engine, but is set in the Jungle during modern times. Here's the rip from the site: Myth II: Green Berets is a squad-based tactical strategy game set in the treacherous jungles of Southeast Asia. Carefully plan your surgical strike, blast your way through enemy camps, or covertly sneak deep behind enemy lines. Destroy radio towers, defend bases, or eliminate high-ranking VC officers! Your objectives are clear, but your path will be dark and dangerous!Heh, 'squad-based tactical strategy' is all what we're about here. I do have a serious penchant for reality-based games, and I'm a big fan of the Age Of Empires-series RTS games from Microsoft, and this is a budget title, so I might just pick this bad-boy up. You can pre-order from the site. In related news, Avault has scored some news and the first 3 shots of the game. The game is published by Take 2, which did publish H&D and Spec Ops, so it makes sense..
