America's Army preview
[20:14:51 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
PC.IGN has posted a preview of the U.S. Army's Unreal-powered military shooter, America's Army. Here's a small sample: Since this is an Army game, you'll get to play as real forces. The first of approximately 20 missions lets you join up with the 172nd Brigade (Go, Snow Hawks!) as they're called in to stop an ecological disaster along the Alaskan pipeline. You'll also go in with the 82nd Airborne as they drop in to seize an airfield in the swamps near the Joint Readiness Training Center. The 75th Ranger Regiment will be sent to disrupt illegal arms transfers, and keep the terrorists from obtaining anti-air missiles. Intelligence officers and operations personnel have helped to build the various levels as accurately as possible. |

SoF2 review

Rushian
GameSpot has posted a review (that contains some spoilers as well) of Activision and Raven Software's military shooter, Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix, where it scores an 8.3 overall. Here's a clip on the game's AI: Enemy artificial intelligence is much better than the original game's. Characters no longer fail to react when the guy standing right next to them has his brains blown out. Though they don't exhibit much squad coordination, they use cover extremely well. Enemies will often find a spot and stick to it, poking their heads out to take potshots at you. They're also deadly with grenades, which keeps you from staying in one location for long and encourages accuracy on your part, as headshots will immediately drop an enemy. Along with explosive grenades, the computer opponents have some ability to use flashbangs, though they're a bit less successful with these. Sometimes it appears as if they're actually coordinating an attack by throwing a flashbang at you and then advancing through the cover of smoke.I haven't tried this one out yet, but should get to it soon.. |

Sum of All Fears review
[10:15:16 EDT] by

Rushian
MyGamer has posted a review of UbiSoft and RedStorm's latest, The Sum of All Fears, (just released yesterday), where it scores a respectable 80% overall. Here's a snip on the gameplay: Gameplay is very straight forward. You get briefed on a mission that you must accomplish. These missions vary from rescuing a hostage to assassinating a leader to planting a bomb somewhere and ending in taking out a whole terrorist organization. You are then assigned a team of three people which you are free to equip with various machineguns, handguns, grenades and devices (if they are available for the particular mission). You then get inserted into an extraction point where you must follow a path on your map/radar shown at the bottom of your HUD.The game pretty much plays exactly like Rainbow Six, but with the Ghost Recon engine.. |

Again from Blue's, I see there are 2 articles on Redstorm Montreal's Splinter Cell. From WorthPlaying is a Q & A with UbiSoft producer Mathieu Ferland. Let's cut right to the chase: What is your goal with this new Clancy title? Aren’t there enough Clancy games with Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon franchises?Next up, LoadedInc has posted a preview of Splinter Cell as well. Here's some of their report: As your character is at the cutting edge of technology there's all sorts of gadgets at your disposal. We moved into one area where we needed to see what was going on in a room so instead of opening the door we snuck a camera which was attached to a long probe under the door to take a look. The screen then changed to the camera view giving us a black and white image of what was going on behind the door.Gotta admit, this one has me intrigued. I was a pretty big fan of the PC-port of Metal Gear Solid, and liked Project IGI a lot as well. This game should out-do them both as far as sneaker-shooters go..

Blue's pointed me to 2 Rainbow Six: Raven Shield articles from around the net. First up, WorthPlaying has posted a Q & A with game producer Chaddi Lebbos. Here's some of the discussion: What is your favorite feature of the game and why?Next up, LoadedInc has posted a preview of thier own. Here's some of that to start you off as well: At the start of the demo we were shown our team huddled behind a wall in a group and the amount of detail on the character models is just stunning. You can see absolutely everything right down to the weapons and grenades they are carrying strapped to their belts. When you see detail like this you can really appreciate the power of the game engine. This game will be another cash cow for Redstorm when it's released later this fall. And gee, does RedStorm like the initial RS or what? (Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield..)

More on America's Army
[6:50:25 EDT] by

Rushian
Another article on America's Army has popped up on the net. Frictionless Insight has posted a preview on it, based on what they saw at E3. Here's a small clip: The game is primarily comprised of cooperative multiplayer play, but has a significant single player element designed to guide the character through progressive training and career advancement. Basic training, for example, should introduce the player to the game, while rigorous sniper training must be completed before gamers can take on a sniper role in-game. Training elements currently include marksmanship training, airborne school, sniper school and Ranger school missions. |

GameSpy Stands in Line for Chow

America's Army is a title that is now wow'ing GameSpy, a bunch of guys who usually have much better taste than PC Gamer, in my not-so-humble opinion. In their preview they point out that "[o]ne feature of AA:O not often seen in games is weapons fallibility -- weapons can (and will) jam and fail, with each weapon having a unique different fail percentage." Phew! My work here is done. I can die in peace, now, having tirelessly preached since Rainbow Six about the necessity of this feature in the tactical first-person shooter, knowing that it was part of the very first PC tactical shooter, Electronic Arts' SEAL Team back in '92. It figures that it would take someone like the U.S. Army to have the big brass ones to return this weapon jamming feature to its rightful place. Now if we can only convince RedStorm/Ubisoft, Bohemia Interactive Studios, and Sentry Studios... I knew that there was something I liked about the Army (other than lady pilots). |

America's Army preview
[20:26:50 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot has posted their impressions of America's Army, the Unreal-engined squad shooter being developed by the U.S. Army that will be given away for free as a promotional tool. Here's a clip to psych you up: Sporting an attention to detail and realism that rivals last year's highly acclaimed Operation Flashpoint, America's Army is supposed to simulate the experience of real-life small arms combat. Weapons can jam. Reloading takes time. Support is vital. Stealth is important. It's certainly complex, but judging by our first impression, much like in Operation Flashpoint, the realism doesn't really get in the way of the game being fun. On the contrary, the realism means that America's Army has a different feel to it than more action-oriented multiplayer shooters like Counter-Strike.Gotta admit, the shots do look sweet. Hope the gameplay can math it.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Rushian
Another Tom Clancy-based game is in the works over at RedStorm Montreal.
GameSpot has a detailed write-up on it, as they examine the demo mission seen at E3 in depth. Sounds pretty interesting, a bit like Konami's Metal Gear series, with maybe a bit of Innerloop's IGI thrown in too..

DF:BHD x4
[6:55:00 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Blue's News pointed me to four E3 previews of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. They can be found at:
To clarify: Despite the game's title, it is not a licensed property and isn't directly related to either the novel by Mark Bowden or the recent film directed by Ridley Scott. When we asked about this, it was pointed out that "Black Hawk Down" is a commonly used military term, and of course, this game does depict some of the same events as the book and movie of the same name. DF: BHD takes place during the 12 months of Operation Restore Hope, where American troops were sent into Somalia. The game will feature much more than either the book or the movie, as those only showcased a small portion of the entire campaign. We were told that this was a major reason why the company didn't pursue an official license--having one would have restricted it to the same events as the previous versions. The game will be using an enhanced version of the Comanche 4 engine, and release is set for this fall.

OFP: Resistance impressions
[6:22:01 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot has posted their impressions of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, based on a look at it at this year's E3. Here's a bit on the game's background: The game itself is actually a prequel to the events of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and its first expansion pack, Red Hammer. You play the role of an ex-Soviet soldier who's piecing together a group of resistance fighters in an attempt to repel an impending Soviet invasion of his home island. You start out the game with nothing other than your own personal rifle, and you'll be forced to acquire your equipment, weapons, and ammunition from the enemy through any means necessary.Eighteen new (tiny!) screenshots are included. Do check! |

Waves of Tac-Shooters that Just Won't Die!--Delta Force: BHD
[20:04:46 EDT] by
~~
Uziyahu
And the hot news just keeps on coming! Is there any end to the deluge of hot tactical shooters that are being cranked out? Geez, I not only don't have time to play all of the tactical-only shooters, anymore, but I also don't have the money! I refuse to dish out $40 twice a month for every good shooter that comes out! I am forced to become a truly discriminating gamer! What's the latest hottie showing off her legs? After the not-so-impressive news about the coming Delta Force iteration about the Afghanistan operations (sorry Lloyd!), NovaLogic has now announced Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, obviously based on the book and movie of the same name. Now because I can't buy every sweet shooter that comes out, I am forced to say that though DF:BHD is made for NovaLogic's new graphics engine, there is much about this engine that looks like DF:LW and so far very little that doesn't. Also, it is said at GameSpot that weapons found in DF:BHD will be those used in Somalia '93, I don't remember reading diddly about the OICW being used and I seriously doubt it was! And another thing, most of Mogadishu was only 1 story tall, and that only if the homes could stay erect in the rotor wash of a Black Hawk!

Raven Shield E3 Video
[19:35:07 EDT] by
~~
Uziyahu
UbiSoft has released an E3 trailer showing off Rainbow Six: Raven Shield. It weighs in at 70 megs and shows off some improvements to the series, though they seem like baby-steps, to me. You can get it at the UbiSoft site or at FilePlanet. It is worth the download if you have a broadband connection. Something that is very impressive is the new thermal imaging shown off in screenshots at ThePlatoon.com. Note that the only things that would make thermal imaging worthwhile are the recon and sniping applications (the latter presupposing a system which allows for ballistic penetration a la "Navy SEALs", the movie).

Have You Ever Considered the U.S. Army as a Gaming Career?
[19:19:22 EDT] by
~~
Uziyahu
Not content to call up Seniors in High School, the United States Army will be offering for free a tactical first-person shooter called America's Army, about (you guessed it!) soldiers in the U.S. Army, made by soldiers in the U.S. Army. It looks promising. At the website you can check out screenshots and video. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, I can say that it looks like it is staying pretty faithful to the experience. |

OFP: Resistance preview
[18:29:15 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Computer & Video Games has posted a preview of Codemasters' Operation Flashpoint: Resistance the official expansion pack to the smash hit Operation Flashpoint. Resistance is being developed by the game's original developer, Bohemia Interactive. Here's a clip on the game's enhanced mod support: Budding mission makers aren't being ignored either. Although my own lofty plans in this particular area didn't exactly bear much fruit, Bohemia is promising to include some "powerful new scripts" according to Smith which should make life a little easier for all of us. Both publisher and developer have been overwhelmed by the way the editing community grew up around Flashpoint and although nothing concrete is planned at the time of writing, Smith does hint at continued support for the creatives out there, sitting at home inventing wars in their underwear (so to speak). At least there's the new island, weapons and civilian vehicles to mess about with while the pros decide what to do for you next.

Chrome preview
[18:13:47 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Today seems to be sci-fi shooter day, and as such, those wacky guys at ActionTrip have posted a preview of Techland's sci-fi shooter, Chrome. Here's a little sniperoo from that: In terms of in-game graphics Chrome's main building block would definitely have to be the highly detailed environment. It's something similar to what we've seen in Serious Sam - huge levels and lots of vegetation. Moreover, varying planet atmospheres indicate different weather conditions, so that each level is going to feature different environmental conditions that go in accordance with the planet's climate (you can mostly expect to see heavy rain, strong snowstorms, and so on). The game is also powered by a pretty solid physics engine, which allowed the developers to add various interesting gameplay enhancements. For example, in-game models will fall down differently almost every time they are hit, and the way they'll collapse largely depends on the structure of the terrain and nearby obstacles. Nice and realistic, you might say.Sadly, it seems that the co-op MP mode has been cut.. The game might be falling into the 'just another shooter' category now..

Deadly Dozen: PT update
[16:12:41 EDT] by

Rushian
After seeing the screenshots on the Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theater website I noticed a few things, and fired off some email to lead programmer Jason Zisk over at developer nFusion to get his word on them. First and foremost, you can now make your squad go prone. Jason tells me it was one of the first things they added for DD:PT. Next, the color palette for the water is just temporary, and that they're working on a totally new way to add water to the game. They want to make it look better than in DD1. (Tho, I thought the water in DD1 was already very well done..) Also, just so you don't forget, the game will have multiplayer this time out, complete with co-op mode! Besides going prone, MP was the other feature that the fans were clammoring for, and nFusion has listened! Plus, the maps from DD1 will be able to be imported into the game for deathmatch multiplayer action. Can't wait for October when this puppy ships. Thanks Jason for the info! [Update]: To the Game has re-posted 7 screenshots as the Infogrames site had, but at higher res.. |

The guys over at EuroGamer have posted a preview of GSC GameWorld's S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Oblivion Lost (think Codename: Outbreak 2), based on a chat with lead designer Sergiy Grygorovych. Here's a quote from Sergiy: "We're making a game about the Chernobyl exclusion zone, and naturally will try to most fully render the atmosphere and looks of the inner ten kilometer zone", Sergiy told us. "This means that along with creating prototypes of real constructions, vegetation and landscape, we will also use 'real' textures brought from there. The game will feature Red Forest, Prypjat city, Chernobyl city, the Chernobyl atomic facility and more. Chernobyl plant is the centre of the zone, and the game objective is not only to reach it, but also to get inside."Def check out the shots, which seem to have taken a quantum leap forward in quality.. |

Rushian
Blue's pointed me in the direction of a Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe review over at GameSpot Austrailia, where it scores a 6.5 overall. Here's how they conclude: Overall the graphics do look better, it is a clearer game with the added elements, but the improvements feel like a slick coating over a game which is still a few years old in style and gameplay. It is unfortunately still a game which lacks the freshness of more recent strategy games. |
