Full Spectrum Warrior "Best of E3"
[8:51:52 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
I saw via Voodoo Extreme that Pandemic's (Dark Reign 2, BattleZone) upcoming military, tactical, squad shooter Full Spectrum Warrior was nominated "Game Critics Awards – Best of E3 2003" (based on the XBox version, but a PC version is also planned.) Here's the 411: Full Spectrum Warrior's unique third-person squad-based, tactical-action gameplay depicting a modern urban warzone set itself apart at the show, garnering tremendous response among each of our key constituencies – from retail to press to the analyst community."I have to admit tho, that personally, I'm a bit tired of urban warfare (and warfare in the desert).. I like mil shooters that take place in the great outdoors.

The folks from Techland sent word that the E3 Chrome trailer is now available. The trailer comes in 2 formats, 400x300 (24 MB) and 640x480 (36 MB). Here's some of the PR: Starting today, the new Chrome trailer, which was presented during E3, is available for download. "This trailer does not differ much from the previous ECTS trailer, but it uses mostly DirectX version of Chrome. We decided to make this trailer available for the Polish game fans that did not get a chance to visit our exposition in Los Angeles" - says Przemyslaw Marmul from Techland. They also sent along a new screenshot to check out:

H&D2 preview(s)
[5:19:14 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The guys over at pc.ign have posted a preview of Illusion Softworks' upcoming WWII tactical shooter, Hidden & Dangerous 2, based on seeing it at this year's E3. Here's some clippage: We saw two specific missions while at E3 this year. In the first, the four man SAS squad is trying to infiltrate a German-held castle and make off with some Abwehr records. Like most missions in the game, this one requires that you complete a number of successive tasks. First you've got to take out a German driver and steal his uniform. In disguise now, you'll have to clear a few German patrols, make your way in to the castle and take off with the documents.I'm def hoping for good things from this title as the sequel to the classic H&D1. Can't wait! [Update]: Another preview can be found at EuroGamer. |

Gamespy Soldner Preview
[10:20:38 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Gamespy posted an E3 preview of Soldner: Secret Wars. An excerpt: Soldner will also be open-sourced. From what I've seen of the coding behind the game, it looks to be a very simple XML format. Therefore, whole new genres of games could be created by the mod community. Capture the flag could become capture the jeep, where a strike team is to capture an enemy jeep and drive it back to their base. |

All I can do is ask, "Is the perfect game engine soon to arrive?" FilePlanet is hosting the 500+ Meg Quicktime movie of the Half-Life 2 demo shown to astounded PC game aficionados. Is it any wonder that video games are beginning to supplant the movie industry's hold on our incomes? |

Athena Sword preview
[4:05:55 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Gamespy posted an E3 preview of Athena Sword, the first mission pack for Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. A tidbit: The expansion campaign will ship with eight missions. Eight more missions will be available for multiplayer. In addition to that, there will be classic missions from Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear recreated for Athena Sword. UbiSoft talked to fans of the previous games in order to find the most-wanted missions. Of course, the game will ship with an Unreal Editor tweaked for Raven Shield so the hardcore mod community can create more levels and missions. It may be mistakenly referring to the developer as Redstorm; Ubi Soft Montreal did Raven Shield, and Redstorm is busy with Ghost Recon (possibly a sequel) these days.

~~
Rushian
Marcus sent word of an upcoming Unreal-powered military FPS from Zombie Studios, creators of the venerable Spec Ops series of games. The new game is called Shadow Ops: Red Mercury and will be published by Atari. Here's a snip: Players will face various single player gameplay challenges, such as hostage rescue, demolition and body guard as they fight alongside (and sometimes against) international special forces from the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and Germany. More than 20 authentic general military and special forces weapons will be available to choose from, each with a unique strategic strength against various targets of opportunity.Missions will take place in locales such as the Middle East, Philippines, Bosnia, and Western Europe. Good to see Zombie going back to their roots and a developing military shooter. The game is set for a Summer 2004 release. [Update]: Some screens can be seen at GameSpot. |

Call of Duty interview
[11:12:23 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
IGN has an interview with Lead Designer Zied Rieke and Lead Animator Michael Boon of Infinity Ward, developer of the upcoming squad-oriented WWII shooter, Call of Duty. They emphasize the scale is much larger than MOHAA's: Virtually every level in Call of Duty has a huge number of characters on-screen, some levels have as many as a hundred friendly troops running alongside you. The new scripting system really becomes necessary at that point - just to keep track of all the characters, not to mention the planes, mortars, machinegun nests! They emphasize the new AI system results in more flexibile AI: We have put a lot of work into the AI, and things that would have to be done in script in the past are now done by the AI. This makes for a very dynamic game experience, where players can experience a level differently every time they replay it. We also have put a lot of effort into making the friendly AI squad mates behave like real soldiers on a real battlefield - so the player is completely drawn into the experience of being in the trenches with his fellow soldiers.

Soldner dev diary
[14:32:33 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Wargamer.com has a new Soldner developer diary up focusing on particles, parachutes and various aspects of the game's physics, along with how the game disdains classes, in favor of letting players customize their characters through various kits: As you see you have to pick an item which best fits with your playing style. However as you can still pick your other weapons you aren't restricted as in other games. You can still use cool guns but are also able to help your teammates as a medic or engineer, or plant bombs. The sniper kit is a special case as it enhances the sniper role. Everyone can snipe with a weapon, but with the sniper kit you are better suited to the role, what we call specialized. |

OFP 2 details
[11:04:07 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
ToTheGame has posted some details on Bohemia Interactive's sequel to OFP, Operation Flashpoint 2. The game goes back in time a bit (1960's - 70's) and wages war in 3 different theaters: Southeast Asia, Central Europe and Africa. Here's some of the goods: It's also revealed that an important part of the main campaign will focus on events from the Vietnam war in late 60s, when US forces in South Vietnam numbered over half a million. Missions will see players engaging in solo action, commanding a squad, driving military vehicles, or taking to the air in authentic 'copters and planes. Weapons and military and civilian mobile units are being accurately modelled from period military data.Should be a good one.. The game is set to ship in late 2004.

Operation Flashpoint 2 interview
[11:42:16 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Blues News mentioned a Tactland interview with Bohemia Interactive Studio director and co-founder Mark Spanel about many things, including -- in tight-lipped fashion -- Operation Flashpoint 2. Some details: Marek Spanel: We want to keep game play style similar to the original game but we still want to introduce some never seen game play element. We also want to introduce second generation Flashpoint Engine that would allow larger and more detailed environments, using many new techniques and some significant optimised algorithms. We want to offer more freedom but on the other hand we want to make controls more polished and intuitive. |

VietCong Ambience
[19:08:59 EDT] by
~~
Uziyahu
I was giving the VietCong Single-Player demo a work-out and felt moved to use Creative Recorder to record some of the dialogue (not too much in this particular session) and sound effects. (5 Meg, .mp3) True to Vietnam firefights, lots of lead becomes airborne because of the poor visibility. I'm pretty impressed with the A.I. They hold their own, the scripted dialogue is immersive, and they obey orders well enough to seem realistic.

Liberty: Cry Freedom preview
[13:14:45 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
IGN has a preview of Liberty: Cry Freedom, an intriguing alternate reality (Russia conquers everyone but the U.S. after WWII), squad-command focused, third person shooter. You play one soldier, but give orders to as many as a dozen, who feature intelligent AI, as explained by IGN: Pathfinding is pretty fantastic. NPCs will climb, jump, mount, roll, duck, peek, crouch, scurry, run like hell, advance, lay down covering fire, assess a two-way threat, get the hell out of your way when you're coming at them, and generally not annoy the player to death or confound him with their staggering ineptitude. It's a pretty good start, and with plenty more time to polish, it could be a stellar finish.Orders are given in first person mode. You recruit new squadmates as levels go, so the player can afford to use some as cannon fodder. |

Gamspy has an article up, on location with Infinity Ward as it records sounds for its WWII game, Call of Duty. "Your allies will give you suppressing fire, and enemies will stay down and cover; they won't just get up blindly, pop up, and get shot." |

Rushian
Also from Blue's News, I see Gamers Depot has posted a review of nFusion's Line of Sight: Vietnam, and awarded it with 4½ stars overall. Here's a clip: Our overall opinion on Line of Site is that it’s just plain awesome. If you like first-person shooters based on historical events, then you will likely love this game too. It’s challenging and that’s precisely what makes it fun. The fact that this game was based on a real group of solders is pretty spiffy and really helps to draw the player into their role.Well, if that's not praise I don't know what is..

Call of Duty interview
[1:29:07 EDT] by
~~
CorporalGeo
Gamespot posted a lengthy interview with Call of Duty producer Vince Zampella about the WWII three-campaign game under development by Infinity Ward. Some details on British campaign: The British campaign starts the player off as a glider infantryman on D-Day, capturing and defending the bridge over the Caen Canal that is now known as Pegasus Bridge. From there, the campaign chronicles the exploits of a group of soldiers in 2 SAS (Special Air Service) who are tasked with highly difficult sabotage operations behind enemy lines. The battleship Tirpitz and the Eder Dam are also real parts of World War II that set the stage for several missions in the British campaign. He also covers the squad emphasis: Call of Duty is all about fighting as a group--it's not about one-man armies. Fighting alongside friendly soldiers--even friendly tanks en masse, in some missions--is the core theme for many missions. The scale is generally squad-level (small groups of four to eight tasked with a specific goal), but it does scale up to larger numbers depending on the mission at hand. |

Vietcong review
[7:43:35 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameGuru Mania is the latest site to post a review Pterodon & Illusion's Vietcong, where it scores a 79% overall. Here's a clip on how the game plays out: The game contains a solid single-player campaign (over 20 missions) which will take a veteran player 8-10 hours to complete, and a beginner considerably longer. During the single player campaign Hawkins either works alone or with a squad of teammates to accomplish the various missions in the jungles. The jungle is full of simple but deadly traps that are hard to notice with an inexperienced eye, so you have to watch and listen to your point man. Moving through the jungle quickly will mean running the risk of hitting these snares, but moving too cautiously will often give the enemy an advantage. The mission goals are somewhat forgiving in how you should accomplish them, so every once in a while you will have no clue what to do.And be sure to check out the whole slew of screenshots at the end of the review.. |
