SWAT3 interview
[20:50:29 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The fine folks over at Tactical Games have put up an interview with Rod Fung, producer of Sierra's SWAT3: Close Quarters Battle. Here's a snip to get ya started: What can you tell us about new weapon features? Will there be whole new ways of playing SWAT3 you think by using some new weapons or their features? Using the new weapon features in the game such as suppressed weapons and magnified optics opens the door for people's tactical creativity. Not sure how people will play the game using the new gun features. Certainly the Beta C mags which hold 100 rounds each are a tremendous asset to a team, though by loading someone down with the Beta mags, it will affect their overall speed. Just like in a real SWAT call-out, it will be interesting to see how people decide to approach a situation. One of the huge strengths of our game is that it allows the player to be as creative as possible in dealing with a situation, both in pre-assault briefing as well as dealing with changing circumstances during game play.

COE info
[1:40:49 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Rogue Spear Retreat has posted word from RSE's Greg Stelmack that clears up the confusion some were having on exactly how Covert Operations will install onto your system. Here's the goods: To be a bit clearer: Covert Ops IS a mod and installs to the mod directory. It also comes with its own .exe and all the supporting data necessary to run stand-alone. If you run the Covert Ops executable, all you will get is the Covert Ops mod to play. If you run Urban Operations, you will see the Covert Ops mod available as an optional mod that you can choose to activate or not activate. There ya go.

FPS tactical gaming article
[19:36:42 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
PublicWars.com has posted an interesting article on the future of tactical first-person shooters. The article is divided into three parts where part one and two is now available. The subject of the articles is the implementation of a Command System into the muliplayer part of tactical FPS. The first part in the series discusses the general how and why, while part two is an illustrated example of how a game that would use this system could unfold. Part three will discuss the consequences such a system would have on the genre. Here's a snip to get ya going: Until now all tactical FPS have done quite a good job with portraying the individual soldier's role in combat, and for games with small team sizes and close quarters such as SWAT 3 and RougeSpear, we should expect nothing more. But for tactical FPS games with greater geographical areas, larger team size and spanning over a larger time frame, such as Delta Force 2 and the upcoming Private Wars, one could not avoid wanting to take the genre one step further. This would be done, according to the author, by implementing a command system which would be designed in such a way that it will give the game a more realistic feel to it and even more important, putting focus on the military team feeling. The articles can be found in the PublicWars article section.

IGI preview
[0:20:03 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Player Of Games (me either..) has posted a preview of Innerloop's upcoming game, Project IGI / I'm Going In. Here's a healthy chunk: A very important point for IGI is how designers will approach the huge expanses of land, how do they plan to utilise it so that the gameplay still flows when you are miles away from the enemy base?: “Firstly we start you relatively close to a base, however, as in real life, a base complex can be spread out over a large area, with a permeter that must be broken, guards that need to be avoided, power facilities that need to be taken out, weapon caches to be raided - you're behind enemy lines and thinking on your feet for a lot of the game so you have to use whatever's close to hand. Since the base consists of different encounters, the player has total control over how he aproaches a security post say, from which angle, whether you charge the main gate with all guns blazing, whether you sneak around it, using the binoculars to spot for a weak point or whether you avoids it altogether and move onto the next encounter.”Good stuff throughout. Give it a look! |

Urban Ops review
[6:32:49 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Haven't seen one of these in awhile, but Multi-Player Online Gaming has posted a review of RSE's Urban Operations. Here's a sniperoo: Although Urban Operations is significantly better than most expansion packs on the market, it's far from perfect. First, although Urban Operations claims the AI has been improved, I have yet to see any real evidence of this, except in the "Defend" mode of play. As I mentioned earlier, terrorists are not hesitant to throw a fragmentation grenade your way, but they only do so in the "Defend" mode. Why can't they do this during the campaigns? Other than "Defend," the terrorists in the campaigns do not react any better than they did in Rogue Spear. Second, the single-player aspect of the game is simply too short. With only 5 new missions (10 if you do not own the original Rainbow Six), it's very easy to finish both of the mini-campaigns in a few hours. So, another typical review of UO.. |

The official Flash Point 1985 site was updated with a new Unit of the week. This week it's the Mi-24 Hind Helicopter. The USSR's first fire support helicopter, the Mi-24 entered service in the late 1960's. The helicopter was used extensively in the Afghanistan War. The Mi-24 is a close counterpart to the American AH-64 Apache, but unlike this and other Western assault helicopters it is also capable of transporting up to eight troops.Screenshots and in-game video are included. The Hind will be able to carry troops in the game. Just think about all the possibilities in multiplayer.

GA-Strategy had a chance to talk to the developers of Flash Point: 1985 Status Quo about realism in their upcoming tactical simulator. The developers are going to give players the freedom to complete their missions in a variety of ways. "There is a lot of things possible in Flash Point, and I am confident people will explore many new ways to complete our missions that we've never even thought were possible," Spanel confided. "Will there be more firing or thinking? I don't know. I'm seeing some people play with more action, while others choose cleverness instead of fire-power. But if you don't use your head, someone else will use it... as a target.3 new screenshots are included. |

Covert Ops preview
[1:13:30 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Pie's tatctics has put up a preview of RSE's Covert Ops. Here's how they kick it off: A mere three months after the release of Urban Operations, the mission pack for Rogue Spear, fans of the Rainbow Six line will get another treat. That treat was recently revealed at E3, and is formally known as (take a deep breath): Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Covert Operations Essentials. Basically, this is another mission pack for Rogue Spear, except that the difference lies in the capability of Covert Ops to be played without Rogue Spear. This stand-alone product, will be offered as a totally unique game. And as we'll see, the unique and different focus of this multimedia software will probably attract new players to the Rainbow Six franchise.Plus, here's a bit on Zombie's involvement on the package: Furthermore, the second CD (on which the nine new levels are contained) was developed by Zombie Interactive, the makers of the Spec Ops series of games. Zombie created the majority of these nine new maps, while Red Storm contributed just a few of the new maps. This represents only the second time Red Storm has had its proprietary map-making tools outsourced for use by other developers.Great stuff in there, plus some pics that we've seen before, but worth checking out again. As a side note: Happy Birthday to me! |

Codename: Eagle review
[18:32:28 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The Wargamer has put up a review of Codename Eagle, developed by Refraction Games and published by TalonSoft. Here's a snip on the game's weapons and missions: Weapon selection is quite varied and includes a knife, submachine gun, rocket launcher and flame-thrower (it is an alternate universe after all). For players who like sniping, there is a whole stage designed to let Red sneak around and pick off enemies at a distance. There are also grenades and explosives for the demolitions expert inside us all.Overall, the game has some problems, but some fun can def be had with it.

H&D DC, day 5
[18:09:54 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Its 'day 5' of GameSpot UK's look at the Dreamcast version of Hidden & Dangerous, which is slated for a July release date. Today's installment has 8 new shots, and talks about the DC control scheme: Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Hidden & Dangerous on the Dreamcast is the way in which the developers have been able to make so many different commands accessible via the standard control pad. Keyboard support has been confirmed and there's a chance that support for Sega's mouse will also be included but neither of these will be strictly necessary thanks to some ingenious work on behalf of Illusion Softworks. There are around twenty different controls that can be used in-game, many of which require you to press two buttons simultaneously - this can be tricky to begin with but with practice, actually becomes more intuitive than having to navigate your way around an entire keyboard. There are also links to more shots in the article as well.

I'm Going In preview
[1:05:17 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot has put up another I'm Going In preview, chock full of all kinds of great, new info. Here's a snip on the missions and weapons to be found in the game: Missions range from spying and reconnaissance to assassination and sabotage, and Jones always begins them with barely any weapons. You'll have to procure most of the weapons and items in each mission by killing enemy soldiers, and as such, most of the arsenal in I'm Going In is based on weaponry from the Warsaw Pact. Although Innerloop has finalized only 12 of the weapons in the game, we know that at least eight more are scheduled to be included in I'm Going In. Currently the list includes Soviet weapons like the Kalashnikov AK-47 and Dragunov, Spas 12, T80 .556, Uzi, H&K MP5SD, Browning M2HB, M16A2, Pancor "Jackhammer" auto shotgun, Glock 17, Desert Eagle, Colt Anaconda, as well as several high-powered arms like the LAW 18, proximity mines, and frag grenades. They've got 54 screenshots online as well, most of them that we've seen before tho, but I think I spotted one or 2 new ones in there. Plus, they're always worth a look. |

H&D DC, day 4
[19:21:22 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot UK has posted 'day 4' of their look at the Dreamcast version of IllusionSoft's Hidden & Dangerous. Here's a snip from the text: There are many different ways to play Hidden & Dangerous given that at any one time you'll have four very different soldiers under your control. The first time you play you'll be tempted to think of Hidden & Dangerous as a first-person shooter, tooling up a member of the squad and charging headlong into battle. A couple of minutes and one fatal injury later you'll realise your mistake and take a look at the all-important mission map. You see, there's plenty of action to be enjoyed in H&D, particularly with the ability to switch between first and third-person views while using any of the 15 or so weapons in the game. To be successful though, against what are almost always overwhelming odds you need a plan, plain and simple. There are also 9 pics to take a gander at as well.

Vietnam Black Ops Review
[17:47:38 EDT] by
~~
AndOne
Testing, is this thing on? Anyways, GameOver posted a review of Vietnam: Black Ops with screenshots. The game design in VBO is what really is the most impressive feature of the game. Combine some of the elements of VBO with Soldier of Fortune and you could have had one badass game. VBO is full of plenty of ambush types of situations. If there's a dark corner anywhere on a map, there's almost always going to be Charlie sitting waiting for you to come around. There are also a fair number of tripwires and pit traps, though they probably could have gotten away with more. Some of the traps are pretty well hidden, so saving is somewhat of a necessity. The game only is composed of nine levels, but it's chock full of baddies, traps, jumping over gorges, and etc to make the game pretty difficult.I was able to play this little game 2 weeks ago. The lack of Multiplayer was a big mistake. I would not even consider this a Tactical game. But you got to love the theme of the game. If felt like a MOD to me, but a nice one.

Off Topic: funny story
[0:27:09 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Besides my passion for tactical gaming, I'm also a big fan of the Canadian rock band, Rush (from which my nickname comes.) I happen to be lucky enough that there is a Rush 'tribute' band that plays in my area. They're called Power Windows (check out their web site for their bio's and concert calander), and they're based out of New York City. They play throughout New York, New Jersey (my home state), and Long Island and I catch them at as many shows as I can. So what's this got to do with tactical gaming you ask? You'll see! The latest show was in Long Island this past Saturday. As I was making my way towards the club, driving on the Long Island Expressway (otherwise known as the L.I.E.), I noticed a car in front of me with the license plate of "REDSTORM"! I figured they're either a very big fan, or they work for the company. I followed the car for awhile, but eventually passed it. I didn't get a look at the driver, but I did find it amusing to see a car with that plate. Sure it could be some other kind of redstorm, (it was a red car, so I dunno..) So, if you own that car, and happen to read this site, drop me some e-mail! [Update 20:49]: Reader Scott O. sent word that Red Storm is also the team name of St. John's University in Queens, so that's most likely what the plate was from. Thanks for the update Scott! So, 'mystery' solved. |

H&D AP review
[21:56:30 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Games Domain has posted their review of IllusionSoft's Hidden & Dangerous Action Pack. We've already seen a bunch of these, so we'll move right to a snip on the graphical atmosphere you'll see in the game: Devil's Bridge is the nip and tuck facelift version of Hidden and Dangerous. The weapon views in each package are different, with the original's views being sort of "down the line of sight," whereas Devil's Bridge's view is basically the normal first person perspective shifted off to the side and lowered. Devil's Bridge has slightly more enhanced graphics, but the frame rate is quite diabolical in some situations. Even on my system, which far surpasses the minimum requirements, I was unable to run the game in 1024 x 768 x 32 bit. The best I could run it in was 1024 x 768 x 16 bit, so what sort of super computer you need for this game is beyond me. However, this problem was not apparent in Hidden and Dangerous where the graphics are smooth and no reduction in frame rate was experienced. All this said, Hidden and Dangerous and Devil's Bridge have graphics which are very realistic. So realistic in fact that when it snows in certain campaigns, you sit there shivering... I am not joking! The weather effects are, in my mind, second to none. From the shortened visibility caused by snow blizzards to the eye squinting darkness of a night mission in the midst of a thunderstorm, it's all there, perfectly reproduced for you to relish.Nice screen shots throughout the article as well. Check it out.

H&D DC, day 3
[17:31:21 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Gamespot UK has posted 'day 3' of their look at the Dreamcast version of Hidden & Dangerous. Today's article has 7 more pics and the following blurb: Issuing orders to your comrades in Hidden & Dangerous couldn't be easier. You have a choice of either telling them what to do on the fly - by shouting at them in the game - as long as they're close enough to hear you, or giving them instructions via the map screen. The map screen is often used for planning more elaborate manoeuvres that require the synchronised movement of more than one soldier whereas in-game orders cover the basics such as "Follow me" and "Stay". The inclusion of "Sit" and "Fetch" commands seems unlikley though. Of course you also have the option of switching from one character to another and doing all of the hard work yourself. Although this is great fun and perhaps a little more rewarding it's unlikely you'll be able to progress through much of the game using this technique alone.

RS Strat guide update
[4:51:43 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The Rogue Spear T.O.C has updated their strategy guide for Rogue Spear with a new walkthru for mission 3, Sand Hammer. Here's how to proceed in this mission: Okay the picture above shows entry. I recommend you watch this area carefully. This is important because you could be flanked by terrorist in the bathroom right next to the door. I believe you could breach the bathroom because they come out anyways when they see you. When you enter make sure you see what position your in. Are there a lot of terrorist in the area? If so maybe the back door is the best. Remember You do not have to follow the mission plan all the time for recruit. Make sure that the trigger man is dead upon entry. They've also got pics to go along with the walkthru. A bit late for a walkthru, but check it out if you're stuck, or want to re-play the levels with other tactics.. |

More on H&D for DC
[18:06:27 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpot UK has an article up on the Dreamcast version of IllusionSoft's Hidden & Dangerous. Here's a (slightly redundant) snip on what H&D is about: For those of you unfamiliar with H&D, the game is set during World War II and sees you leading small squads of handpicked soldiers into a number of mission-based encounters with the enemy. Each of the 23 missions - which are split into six different campaigns - will require certain specialist skills and equipment and it's with this in mind that you'll have to pick your troops. They've got 9 pics online from it as well. Check it out! [Update]: I see they've got more info up on H&D for "day 2" of their DC series. Here's a bit of the goodness: With your decisions made and weapons loaded it's time to go to war, and it's now that you'll get your first glimpse of why Hidden & Dangerous was such a massive hit on the PC. The visuals are as impressive as anything seen in Half-Life or Quake III, but with an added air of gritty realism which serves as a reminder that the missions you're about to undertake are not wholly unlike those that happened for real almost 60 years ago. There are 8 more shots too, so check those out as well.

Rushian
The Rogue Spear Tactical Operations Center has put up a strat guide for the first two missions of Rogue Spear. They've also got tips scattered throughout the page, and even a list of cheat codes. The site is best viewed in IE 5.5 or higher. Here's a snip from the Pandora Trigger mission guide: The breach can be slow and cautious and taking your time is a option. Do not use breaching charges because you will cause commotions so keep to lock picking. There are four doors so there is a wide range. Use the heart beat sensor to locate terrorist nearby the doors. Open the door and clear the bathrooms and second floor lobby. Once clear secure the area and move onto the next stage of the Rogue Spear plan. Thanks VE.

News script/newsie
[3:01:10 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Welp, I finally got a news script (the venerable NewsPro) in here for posting news. Up until now, everything was done manually. While I got pretty good at the steps required to post, it was def time to automate some things. Part of the 'problem' why it took so long was that I'm very particular about the way my page looks, and it took me a very long time to duplicate the look of my page with the script. Another reason for moving to the script was now I can have others post news here as well. So, with that, we welcome AndOne (he's ELITE!), whom we all know from his work over at Suppressive Fire, before it met its untimely end. I'm really sorry to see that site go, but part of it lives on with AndOne posting here. (Or something like that! :) Anyway, all news before this news item was manually posted, and from this post on, they're script generated, and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference. As an added bonus, the headlines are now actual links to get you to the articles. (Again, from this post forwards..) For the next few days, news may load a bit slower as I have everything in one cell, vs. loading each day in its own table.. It'll clear up as I archive the old items. If you notice anything out of place, please let me know, but I'm fairly confident everything's in working order. :) |
