Can Ahnold Come Out and Play? [9:24:56 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you've got $5000 to burn, you can always buy the M134 6mm Airsoft Minigun. Not really related to gaming news, I thought this baby would be an object of novelty for most of us.

Seeing is believing!

New Black Hawk Down Video [3:54:07 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
Tiscali Games has a 46sec video clip of DF: Black Hawk Down. Its just about the same footage from GameSpot. While it does look good, I hope the AI is something to write home about.

DF: TFD in stores / BHD comments [17:19:15 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Reader Andy B let me know that NovaLogic's Delta Force: Task Force Dagger has shipped and is now in stores.

Included on the CD is a video trailer for NL's upcoming Delta Force: Blackhawk Down which Andy says will def give Ghost Recon a run for it's money, and that DF:BHD bears very little similarity to the earlier DF titles, due to the enhancements of the Comanche 4 game engine and the skeletal animations that provide lifelike movement of the characters.

If you've seen the new DF:BHD trailer (story), you'd have to agree. NL is taking a page from OFP's book and really making the world seem 'lived in' and alive with troops running around (and squads doing push-ups..), choppers flying around, radio chatter, etc.. Great stuff. Should be good when it gets here in October 2002.

In the mean-time, go grab TFD and payback some terrorists.

Vietcong [15:19:35 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
Illusion Softworks (makers of Hidden & Dangerous) announced their new game called Vietcong. As the name suggest its a first person shooter set in the Vietnam war. Vietcong is set for release this October. (I bet it comes out before H&D 2)

Acting as an elite soldier, players of "Vietcong" command the A-team, part of the U.S. Special Forces, in realistically represented Vietnamese environments. Players will lead as many as six expertly trained soldiers through 20 dramatic missions, and follow a storyline that captures the danger, fear and unpredictability of the war itself. The full-featured multiplayer mode also allows gamers to play as U.S. Special Forces or Vietcong soldiers and to battle over specially designed levels.

Bluesnews has 3 screenshots up. No word on what engine the game uses.

[Update]: BonusWeb has also posted a little blurb on the game, with a shot of the box cover. (Thanks Andy B.)

DF:BHD Vids! [20:51:08 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
Redhawk at Land-Warrior.com has posted links to a series of 6 Delta Force: Black Hawk Down videos. I must say that I am quite impressed, even though I'm a die-hard OFP fan. Still a lot of bugs to work out, obviously, but definitely the makings of a fantastic game! If you've seen the movie you will not be disappointed! If you decide to download them from Clash's site, you may have to check every half hour, as GeoCities throttles the bandwidth of their free websites.

Wacked Physics [20:43:32 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
It would seem that Operation: Flashpoint isn't the only game where launching jeeps is a favorite pastime. Looks like Halo has the problem, too. (This Quicktime files weighs in at around 23 Megs.)

You just need a little wind resistance, designers! A large flat polygon pushing flatly against the air will not travel the way it would if it were cutting into the air or if it was a small polygon.

New Delta Force Shipping [13:56:24 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
Just a reminder that Delta Force: Task Force Dagger ships this week. DF:TFD is based around the real Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

IGI2 screens / info [12:30:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Codemasters sent word that they've released a new batch of IGI2 screenshots (165K ZIP file) that offers up 12 rather small pics at 300x225 res.

IGI2 shots

Here's some of what the game will feature:
IGI 2: Covert Strike pits IGI operatives against terrorist groups from around the globe. The varied multi-objective based gameplay will include hacking data satellites to launching space shuttles, bombing oil refineries and escorting convoys. Reconnaissance elements provide for a new style of FPS multiplayer gaming, blending stealth and surveillance with action and gunplay.

Stealth gameplay - You are encouraged to use subtlety and intelligence, rather than brute force, in order to overcome an obstacle.

Story driven single-player game - Hero David Jones is once again at the forefront of preventing international terrorism, world catastrophe and betrayal at the very highest level.

9-mission campaign set in real world locations spanning three continents, from all-out base assaults to covert surveillance and infiltration; thefts and escapes in outdoor and indoor, urban and rural environments.

More than 30 guns and other accurately modelled real-world weapons, including: knifes, pistols, assault and sniper rifles, sub machineguns, miniguns, rocket launchers and grenades.

High-tech equipment and game elements - thermal imaging devices, electronic doors and switches, sentry guns, security cameras, alarm systems, base security systems, digital binoculars, and a portable map computer showing real-time satellite data.
The game is slated for a September 2002 release.

IGI2 MP details [7:07:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
While at Worthplaying, I came across an article that details the IGI2 multiplayer modes. Here's some of the news:
IGI2: Covert Strike will deliver a full team-oriented multiplayer mode, with squads of up to eight players on both sides.

Gameplay pits IGI operatives against terrorist groups from around the globe. The varied multi-objective based gameplay will include hacking data satellites to launching space shuttles, bombing oil refineries and escorting convoys. Reconnaissance elements provide for a new style of FPS multiplayer gaming, blending stealth and surveillance with action and gunplay.

The game will contain a series of multiplayer maps utilising an advanced version of Innerloop's proprietary engine, which delivers excellent indoor locations and expansive outdoor environments.

Throughout the locations, surveillance cameras can spot players and relay locations & sneaking past these will not always be easy. Remote sentry guns, electronic doors and shutters will feature and whichever team can establish control over these will prove vital for their supremacy. [more...]
Sounds pretty good so far..

[Update]: Blue's News has posted 14 new shots, showing off both SP and MP action.

Splinter Cell movie [6:20:20 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Coolman sent word that FilePlanet is hosting a Splinter Cell movie (68 MB), showing off 3 minutes and 30 seconds of gameplay footage in QuickTime format. Here's the rip:
Here's a great movie from Ubisoft of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell title. You are a field operative of a secretive black-ops NSA sub-agency known as Third Echelon and are geared up to infiltrate high-security strongholds, destroy threatening data and seize critical intelligence without leaving a single trace.
Def looking sweet..

More SoF2 reviews [19:53:51 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There are 2 more Soldier Of Fortune 2 reviews to hit the 'net:

bulletSoF2 review at GamePen (4 / 5 stars)
bulletSoF2 review at EuroGamer (SP 6 / 10, MP 9 / 10)
Here's a clip from the EuroGamer review:
Which brings us to the game's single biggest flaw - the AI. Put simply, every scruffy looking rebel soldier you come up against is in fact Superman wearing a really cunning disguise. He can see through walls (and will sometimes attempt to fire through them, with often hilarious results), poke arms and legs through solid objects, and consistently land a grenade at your feet from fifty feet away, over a hill, without being able to see you.
Agreed.. not fun.. Plus the game relies on 'cheap' enemy placement, and spawning enemies as well. Not fun at all..

A few Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix reviews have hit the net:
bulletSoldier of Fortune 2 at Elited.net (92%)
bulletSoldier of Fortune 2 at Gamer's Hell (70%)
bulletSoldier of Fortune 2 at Stratos Group (80%)
Wow, pretty big difference between those scores..

Anyway, I finally got a chance to play this, and overall, I'm not impressed. It seems to me the enemy AI has superhuman ability to spot you, and are extremely good shots. Not only that, but it seems to take too many hits to down an enemy. I highly doubt some Colombian rebels have the latest in body armor.. Lately, I've been putting 4-5 extra shots into someone, just to make sure they're dead. I've seen enemies get back up after I nailed them with a shot from the MSG90A1 at relatively close range. Um, I don't think so.

Now, I know how to play these kinds of shooters, and run-and-gun is not my style at all. My gameplay style is all about using cover, stealth, and tactics.. Even playing the game that way is a frustrating experience many times. There are also some spots where enemies will warp in after you reach a certain 'trigger spot', and we all know how we hated that for Medal of Honor. It makes using grenades practically useless, as the enemies aren't there yet!

Next up, I'm not impressed by the guns either. As mentioned previously, it takes far to many hits to kill an enemy. Using burst, or full-auto firing modes causes the guns to get wildly inaccurate, just wasting ammo in the process. So I've been using single-shot mostly (which is the way I tend to play anyway.) I also think the grenade launcher on the M203 is absolutely useless and it seems to shoot grens about 20' (even aiming into the sky), when in actuality they'd go nearly 500' in real life. Sure, I can expect some concessions for 'game design', but the M203 really needs work here.

The random missions are kinda cool, but seem a bit too similar once you play a few of them in a row.. Sometimes you'll have an AI buddy with you. He's a bit of a help, but not much, and I've accidentally blown him up because he got too near some charges I set and didn't get away in time. Sorry buddy!

Overall, I'd give the game a C. Raven's enhancements to the Q3 engine are great, but the rest of the presentation leaves me flat.

DF:BHD preview [18:39:21 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GamesDomain has put up a quickie preview of Novalogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. Here's some hands on:
One of the 20 missions on display saw your character jump aboard one of the Black Hawk's and stay in full control as the helicopter headed across a large expanse of terrain and into the congested city. You leap from the heli onto a rooftop and head on down the stairs to the interior; all with no loading or interruptions to gameplay. "We actually want each mission to have a build up similar to Medal of Honor," said producer, Wes Eckhart, referring to the game's infamous Omaha Beach scene that gradually carried you into the chaos.
Release date is slated for Q4 2002.

Tac Shooters report [18:09:22 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks over at SimHQ have posted an article that takes a look at the land / tactical shooters that they saw at E3, which includes sections for America's Army, Sum of All Fears, Raven Shield, OFP: Resistance, and of course, more.. Here's what they said about America'a Army, the game causing quite a stir (good and bad) these days:
The game is online-only like Counter Strike but with demanding realism that better simulates the factors real soldiers have to deal with on the battlefield. Teamwork will always pay off, and the game provides for that in spades - even down to hand and arm signals, and small unit leadership tactics at the fire team and squad level. The damage modeling is fairly generic, with hit areas broken into vital (head shot) and non-vital (everywhere else) locations, but aside from one-shot kills to the head, other hit locations produce injuries that are not location-specific. In terms of movement, players will find realistic stance options (crouch, prone, etc) available to them. Smoke grenades modeling is probably the best I’ve seen in a PC game. Little things like the impact of your breathing when aiming a weapon, the ability to use the bi-pods on light machine guns, and very realistic weapon sounds make this game worth looking into.
Great article, check it out..
