Medal of Honor Breakthrough interview [15:25:42 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
HomelanFED has an interview with TKO Software co-founder Jacob Hawley about the Medal of Honor Breakthrough expansion. One nifty new multiplayer character and equipment mentioned:
One new feature we are developing is a new multiplayer minelayer class that will be able to place landmines on most earthen surfaces. The mines then disappear from the screen and are only detectable by the enemy when they use the minesweeper device. This will have a great strategic effect on multiplayer gameplay as players will have to be a bit more cautious when they are running around.

Call of Duty interview [21:00:04 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (1)
The UK site, Computer and Video Games, has a new Call of Duty interview with lead designer Zied Rieke, which seems to have some new info on AI, the British campaign missions and the WWII game's animation system:
Your buddies, and the Germans, will limp when injured, stumble or fall down if shot while moving, and generally show evidence of the beating they're taking out there. The animations and the animation system in Call of Duty are amazing.

We have thousands of character animations, and the system which ties them together is not only amazingly fast (it has to be to animate up to 300 guys at once) but is also extremely powerful, allowing us to keep track of what a guy was doing when he was wounded, where he was wounded, where he was shot from and even what foot he was standing on at the time. The system can then respond with the best animation or blend of animations to represent his agony.

Mind-Controlled Games, Next? [17:05:05 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If the mind-controlled wheelchair turns out to be as promising as it looks, then won't mind-controlled games be on the horizon? I'd certainly prefer that to voice command! "Think Russian", Clint!

Raven Shield: Athena Sword videos [20:44:22 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
If you want a sneak peak at Athena Sword, given by those cool guys at GigaGames.de, then ThePlatoon.com has what the body needs. There are 3 videos, probably around 30 Megs each.

There appears to be more in the way of dynamic lighting, non-player characters, and smoke and fog effects in this expansion.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Trailer [18:18:41 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
A nearly 5-minute trailer of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost featuring the E3 build of the game is on-line. You can download the file from the official game site in 2 resolutions. It's about 70 Megs.

I'd say it is about 90% as impressive as the Half-Life 2 E3 Trailer, while upstaging it in some areas.

Desert Storm II trailer, screenshots [1:21:03 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
Blue's News mentioned that the UK site Gamesradar has a trailer and screenshots of Desert Storm II. Trailer's also available at Worthplaying and Gamer's Hell. An info tidbit:
New bits of kit include flares and phosphor grenades, which have a tendency to set enemies on fire. Lovely. New controllable vehicles include the Russian BMP (an armoured personnel carrier) and a Land Rover with grenade launcher mount.

Apache gunship support will also play a far greater role, in addition to artillery and bomber airstrikes.
Geo's note: No word on if the PC version will have easier, more PC-centric controls

HomelanFED Call of Duty interview [1:13:54 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
HomelanFED has an interview with Call of Duty lead designer Todd Alderman. Most of its old information at this point, but there's a hair more detail about the three main campaigns:
The American campaign takes the player from the role of a pathfinder, leading the way into the allied invasion, from racing through villages to reestablish contact with other platoons all the way to clearing out artillery at Brecourt Manor which target the beach for the D-Day landings. The British campaign showcases the work of military commandos securing the famous Pegasus Bridge, an attack on the Eder Dam, and securing an airfield while making a heroic escape. The Russian campaign focuses on the masses of soldiers forced to take the demolished city of Stalingrad, crossing Red Square on the path to secure the elusive Pavlov’s House, and to engage the enemy in a squad of Russian tanks. It all culminates in the chaotic taking of Berlin.

IGN Call of Duty preview [1:08:35 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
IGN has a new preview of Call of Duty. Tidbit about AI in the World War II shooter:
It's impossible to say whether or not Call of Duty has the brainpower to take on the AI of something like Far Cry, but I can already see that blokes behind you, as well as those dastards ahead, adhere to the laws of common sense. Sure, you can shoot through bushes, but the enemy can't see through them unless you're behind one long enough to give that enemy a good enough look and a clear enough shot at you. Toss a grenade and maybe he'll toss it back, assuming he doesn't bolt for cover and roll behind a rock. And yes, your buddies can dynamically take charge of turrets and stationary machineguns, but you can just as easily get them out of their place with a simple click.

Soldner: Secret Wars developer diary [9:42:43 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
The Wargamer has a new Soldner: Secret Wars developer diary entry. There's an interesting tidbit about how the game tries to do something innovative in its use of maps:
But then we asked ourselves: if we did a couple of huge maps based in the real word and put so much work into them, why waste space? Why don't we connect the maps so you can really fly from one to another? This led to the decision to drop the idea of "maps" and only put one huge map into the game. Of course the map is divided into playable areas that gamers could call "maps", but the borders around them are not visible.

Depending on server settings those borders can be hard, soft or non existent. So yes, you can fly outside a game action area and get lost. Modern navigation systems will help you find your way back, if you choose to use one.

Medal of Honor Breakthrough preview [0:24:05 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
PC.IGN.Com has a brief new preview of Medal of Honor Breakthrough, the next expansion for MOHAA. A snippet:
The game just reached alpha stage (meaning that all the features are in) and there are about two more months of work to be done in terms of polishing and balancing the game.

Featuring 11 single player missions, the game starts once again in North Africa. (You're not playing as Mike Powell or Jack Barnes this time but as an entirely new character for the franchise.) Beginning with the dusty battle of the Kasserine Pass, you'll have to fight your way through numerous theaters including glider landings in Sicily and mountain fighting up the boot of Italy.

Battlefield Vietnam previews [0:20:54 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
Blue's News mentioned several previews of Battlefield Vietnam at Gamespot, HomeLAN Fed and PC.IGN.Com, all based on a Camp EA press event today. A snippet from the HomeLAN Fed preview:
The development team is keeping a lid on exactly what kinds of weapons and vehicles will be in BF: Vietnam but in our brief demo we saw F4 Phantom jets, tanks, Huey helicopters and more. You can even take a jeep or tank in the game and lift it via a helicopter to another location. Napalm will also be used as an aerial weapon for the US side. The NVA will have some tricks of their own. In our demo we saw a booby trap as a string of large logs was sent rolling into our American troops as we can expect more traps like that in the full game. The NVA also used RPG's to take out our troops and hovering Huey helicopters in our demo of the game.

Call of Duty gameplay movies [11:01:52 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
Infinity Ward recently released several cool gameplay movies from the U.S. and Russian campaigns in their WWII squad-themed Call of Duty. Originally released at Gamespot, they're now at several site links, including Worthplaying and 3Dgamers. The U.S. movies in particular show off the game's new AI system, with the U.S. soldiers properly using cover, crouching and going prone if necessary, and providing suppressing fire. The Russian movies show off some massive effects including several German Stukas on strafing runs and a massive, screen-shaking Russian artillery bombardment during a shore landing.

Battlefield 1942 Battle of Britain map [10:52:14 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
The official Battlefield 1942 site announced an upcoming new official map called Battle of Britain:
In this new Battlefield 1942 map, German forces must disable four RAF radar towers as well as the heavily-protected Harwich Weapons Factory on the coast of England. If the British can defend these targets until the German tickets run out, they can wrest victory from the jaws of defeat. With one new vehicle and one new weapon entering the fray, the Battle of Britain is set to be Battlefield 1942's fiercest campaign yet.
They plan to debut screenshots of the new vehicle and weapon later today.

    America's Army v1.9 major update [11:44:06 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
The America's Army site announced an upcoming major update (version 1.9). Major changes include new interface, new higher-resolution character models, new damage models, new single player training and multiplayer missions, Punkbuster anti-cheating support and a new character class -- the combat medic:
This new update introduces a new MOS: combat medic (91W). And true to U.S. Army form, with this new MOS comes the required training. Hooah! That’s right – this update comes with 4 different medical training courses, culminating in a field test where you put your newly-acquired medical skills to work! If you pass these training courses, you get to play the role of combat medic online and administer first aid to your troops in the field.

Full Spectrum Warrior E3 movie [11:34:17 EDT] by ~~ CorporalGeo   Comments (0)
FilePlanet offers a massive 505MB Full Spectrum Warrior movie taken of a demo shown at E3. FilePlanet download page. This is the promising (alas, X-Box only at this point) squad-oriented action game by Pandemic Studios, based on a game commissioned by the U.S. Army for training purposes:
Full Spectrum Warrior is based on a game commissioned by the U.S. Army to train light Infantry troops in urban combat situations. Soldiers are placed in a tense, hostile, and claustrophobic environment where they must complete a variety of military objectives. Players act as the Squad Leader, providing direction to Alpha and Bravo fire teams. The successful Squad Leader effectively uses cover in the environment and moves his fire teams in a coordinated fashion so they can protect themselves from possible attacks that could come from any direction.
