OFP: Resistance review [22:21:58 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Another Operation Flashpoint: Resistance review has popped up, this time at ELiTeD.net, where they give it a score of 95% overall. Here's a clip:
The survival of your men is also key to your success. If one of your comrades falls in battle they will not be seemingly replaced by another unit in the next mission. This does a number of things to the game play. Again, it makes the campaign much more realistic and it also forces the player to cherish and respect the men under their command. If you do not, you will likely find yourself fighting for the resistance movement alone, which becomes very difficult. You might at some point find partisans who may choose to join your cause, but this happens very rarely. So take care of your soldiers!

Splinter Cell PC preview [14:00:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has posted a preview of the PC-version of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, based on a closed-door demo from this years ECTS.

Splinter Cell preview

Here's a little snip:
Due to the fact that Splinter Cell takes place "the day after tomorrow" Sam has an impressive arsenal of gadgets at his disposal, these include a fibre optic camera that can be slid under doors before going through them, a modified F2000 gun capable of lunching grenades, and sticky cameras. Sticky cameras are small enough to be fired from a gun and, once they adhere to a surface, the player can look through them and even rotate them to get a good view of the location ahead.
Sweet stuff; check out the rest. The game is set for a Q4 release.

GR: Island Thunder shots [13:13:21 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Shacknews has posted some new shots from Island Thunder, Redstorm and UbiSoft's second expansion pack for Ghost Recon, which is set for release late September.

GR: Island Thunder

Thanks again, Blue's News.

OFP: Resistance review [13:03:35 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's News that The Gamers Temple has posted a review of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, where it scores a solid 84% overall. Here's some snippage:
If you finish the campaign and are still hungry for challenge, the game includes 5 single player missions. These missions tend to be quite challenging, so they will keep you occupied for a while. Once you complete them, you can venture online to try out one of the nine new multiplayer combat situations. Resistance has completely revamped the game's multiplayer component, making it a lot easier to get online and into a game than in the original game.

Resistance boasts an improvement in graphics over the original. To notice the difference, though, you'll need to crank up the game's graphics settings and have the horsepower to do so. Even with the settings set to their maximums, the graphics are not a large leap forward from the original. They certainly look better, especially the vehicles and flora, but the game is still not on par graphically with today's top first person shooters.
Nice set of screenshots to go along with the review; check 'em out.

Chrome Interview [18:55:15 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Fresh from ECTS, comes an interview with Techland's Jan Marek, where they discuss their sci-fi tactical shooter, Chrome. Here's something to start you off:
Your enemies seem quite intelligent in this opening level - what can you tell about your opponent AI routines?

Marek: Well the AI kind of adjusts itself according to the environment and the game situation: They'll make decisions based on what kind of weapons they have, whether they're indoors or outdoors, whether they're in a group or one their own. They behave quite naturally and they've got tons of idle animations, they'll lounge around, maybe have a smoke, walk around, group up when they're attacked. We spent a lot of time on the AI and we're still working on it. There's always things to improve but at some point we'll have to say that's it.
The game is scheduled for a Q4 2002 release. Still no word on the promised demo.

Raven Shield delayed/ shots [18:34:20 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In the 'games delayed' department, it seems that the official Raven Shield website has news that the game will be delayed until Feb 2003. Here's the rip:
Leviat here with a good news and a bad news.

The bad news, you will have to wait a little bit longer to get your hands on Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: RAVEN SHIELD. The release date of the game is postponed till beginning of February.

The good news, as I know some of you are dreaming day in and day out about the game, be glad about this decision, as with the time we have now, it will permit us to deliver to you guys the ultimate Rainbow Six experience and a game worthy of the Clancy name.

The work we still have to do is tweaking and balancing the whole game out...and let us not forget the very important testing and debugging period that has already started a while back. So there you have it, this is the straight story, the real deal from the Producer to the fans.

Talk to you soon

Chadi lebbos
aka Leviat
Producer of Raven Shield
While I'm disappointed with the delay, there were too many tactical shooters scheduled for this winter, so this is good news in disguise.

[Update]: To help soften the blow, ToTheGame has posted 5 new screesnhots (albeit a bit on the dark side.)

VietCong trailer [2:53:13 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Illusion Softworks' recently-released game Mafia contains a trailer for their upcoming game, VietCong. The trailer clocks in at 12 MB in Windows Media format, and runs 1:10. Def worth a look.

[Update]: Ok, seems we're getting hit pretty hard with traffic for the trailer. Please download the trailer (right-click the link and pick "Save as..", and don't stream it. Thanks!

NAA Squad Movie for OFP [22:08:56 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
Now that Battlefield 1942's MP demo is out, having learned from the pioneering Operation: Flashpoint, no doubt, you might need a reminder as to why OFP kicks so much heineken.

Download the OFP Movie, made by the Northern American Alliance squad (clans are for Braveheart and outdated sheet-wearing in-breds). It weighs in at 5 Megs, is compatible with version 1.42 of OFP (and later, I would assume) and is guaranteed to amuse you. Note that there is a soundtrack rife with profane language, so if that sort of thing offends you, better pass this up or turn the music slider all of the way down. Simply extract this one to your OFP/Missions folder.

[Rushian's note]: Yup, this is seriously cool.. Def a must see for OFP owners. The docs say it doesn't work with Resistance, so just put in your OFP disc and run the old OFP exe..

BF: 1942 MP patch [19:55:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Word around the 'net is that EA will be releasing a patch "soon" for the MP demo of Battlefield: 1942 to address problems with the 60hz refresh rate (cough*WinXP*cough), improve server stability, and add support for the All Seeing Eye game browser. Woot!

IGI2 Interview [19:42:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at Action Trip (..always a trip) have posted an interview with InnerLoop's Henning Rokling, where they discuss their stealthy-shooter, IGI2: Covert Strike. Here's some clippage:
AT: Many gamers have complained about the fact that the first game lacks a save game option. The levels were somewhat lengthy, which was too much for some players to handle. Are you planning to remedy this in IGI 2?

HR: This is definitely something we took to heart, and have included in IGI2 Covert Strike. It's regulated by difficulty-level and done with the Map Computer. You have enough battery for 3 saves in Easy, 2 saves in Medium, and none in Hard mode.
I have to admit, I really liked IGI 1, so I have high hopes for this one. Release date is slated for late September.

No One Lives Forever 2: Ohio Teaser [18:00:16 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
No One Lives Forever had some of the most human A.I. I had ever seen. Now you can taste the sequel.

If you've never heard of NOLF, think "Lady James Bond" in the 60's. The dialogue was intelligent and humorous, the story was about as good as you could expect from an action PC game, and the environments were nearly tangible.

Maybe I need a life, but who needs a girlfriend when you've got Cate Archer?

As to whether NOLF could be considered "tactical", I'd have to say, "Yes, because cover, concealment and gun control (the good kind) are big factors in determining a player's success." NOLF2 promises to allow the player to exercise even more creativity when interacting with the enemy.

OFP: Resistance review [17:07:09 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at Adrenaline Vault have posted a review of Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, Bohemia Interactive's official expansion pack for OFP, where it scores a solid 4 stars.

OFP:R review

Here's a bit on what's new in the game:
Bohemia's title contains many of the award-winning elements of Cold War Crisis along with some new additions. Players control their character from both a first- and third-person perspective, and can switch to a special overhead command view in order to instruct units on the battlefield. Numerous vehicles can be commandeered, from civilian cars and tractors to military tanks, transports, fighters and helicopters. Resistance also adds new vehicles like motorcycles, cars and boats to the equation as well as several new weapons, including the Sa61 Scorpion, the Glock 17 and the XM-177E2 rifle. Graphically, the developers have revamped the Flashpoint engine, allowing for higher-quality textures, detailed trees and foliage, and realistic faces. The island of Nogovna itself consists of 100 square kilometers of all-new territory, complete with dozens of towns and villages.
I started playing OFP:R right before my business trip, but haven't been able to get back into it yet (no time! ). But I def liked what I saw...

More VietCong shots [0:26:30 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's News that GameStar.de has posted new screenshots (and a few previously-seen ones) of Pterodon Studios and Illusion Softworks' VietCong, their Vitenam-era tactical shooter, set for a late September release.

America's Army patch [21:56:16 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The lastest patch is out for America's Amry: Operations, bringing the game up to version 1.2.0 (the full game), and dropping the 'Recon' moniker. The new patch adds the Airborne and Ranger schools/tours.

Head over to GameSpy for the patches. (Lol, 179 minutes wait time on the public servers! Mirrors surely will pop up later..)

[Update]: Nice fast mirror at 3D Gamers.

DF: BHD dev diary [21:45:55 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Computer & Video Games has posted part one of a developers diary on NovaLogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down from NL's associate producer Barry Feather. Here's a bit on what to expect from the missions:
Since we are spending more time in cities in this Delta Force game, the levels have many more objects than is the norm. The levels that I have seen so far are much more engaging and lush than those in previous Delta Force games. Each mission this time will be longer than the typical Delta Force mission. I have played three of the early missions so far and they each have a distinct feel and flow that make each stand up as an entity unto itself. The mission write-ups indicate that mission types will be diverse and challenging with varied objectives and tactics.
Good read, check out the rest.

VietCong shots [7:26:25 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ToTheGame has posted 5 new shots of Illusions Softworks (H&D) and Pterodon Studio's (Flying Heros) VietCong.

VietCong shots

Here's some game info:
Acting as an elite soldier, players of “Vietcong” command the A-team, part of the U.S. Special Forces, in realistically represented Vietnamese environments. Players will lead as many as six expertly trained soldiers through 20 dramatic missions, and follow a storyline that captures the danger, fear and unpredictability of the war itself. The full-featured multiplayer mode also allows gamers to play as U.S. Special Forces or Vietcong soldiers and to battle over specially designed levels.
Looking good.. hope it has gameplay to match..

[Update]: Blue's News has one extra shot (shot #5) to check out as well.

UbiSoft preview [7:07:24 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at EuroGamer sent word that they've posted a preview of several upcoming UbiSoft games in the works that will be shown at this year's ECTS, such as Raven Shield and Splinter Cell.

Here's a clip from the Raven Shield part:
The Rainbow Six series has enjoyed a long reign as king of the tactical action genre, and Ubi Soft are hoping that the latest instalment will bring that winning formula up to date. Not only do its Unreal powered graphics mark a giant leap forwards from the rather dated visuals of previous games in the series, but the developers are also promising much better AI this time round.
Check out the rest.

[Update]: There's a Splinter Cell Q & A with Ubi Soft Montreal's Mathieu Ferland over at Action Trip (thanks Blue's News). I see one new pic along with the article as well.

BF: 1942 preview [21:57:53 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
To keep the BF: 1942 news flowing, I see that Gamersclick has posted a Battlefiled: 1942 preview of their own. Here's a clip:
Reminiscent of Medal of Honor, the game will be split into different theatres of war, each with 4 maps representing the major battles of that theatre. The games producer - Ken Balthaser - commented that for example “(…)in the Pacific, we've got Guadalcanal, Wake, Iwo Jima and Midway.” Of course no WW2 game could possibly be complete without emulating the carnage of the Normandy landings so expect to see a map based off one of the five landing sites (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword). It has also been mentioned a few city maps have been planned, including fighting through the battered remnants of Stalingrad, so you can replay “Enemy At The Gates” to your hearts content.
More good stuff in there.. check out the rest.

BF: 1942 gone gold! [19:04:11 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
As noted on GoneGold (thanks Blue's News), EA and DICE's Battlefield: 1942 has gone gold and should be arriving in stores September 12th or thereabouts.. Def looking forward to this one!

After being slightly disappointed with the BF SP demo, I'm glad to say that the BF MP demo was a lot of fun to play. Of course the fun is always related to how good a server you're on and how good your team mates are. On a fast server, and with the right squad, there's great fun to be had. The gfx are really nice, and there are certainly many different ways to win a control point. If you're getting harrassed by planes, man the flak cannons. Getting bombarded from the sea? Time to man the naval guns! And of course, there's much fun to be had ground-pounding in a tank or on foot.

Delta Force: BHD preview [3:51:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Electric Playground has posted a preview of NovaLogic's next installement to the Delta Force series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down.

DF:BHD

Here's a sniperoo:
Perhaps because the levels are so big, you can take control of vehicles, such as attack copters and Humvees. There are vehicle-mounted weapons to control, such as the 50 caliber machine guns. And yes, air vehicles can be shot down. They demonstrated this for us by shooting one of their own Blackhawks down. You probably don't want to be aboard when that happens.

Vietcong preview(s) [3:33:42 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
BonusWeb has posted a preview of Pterodon Studio's VietCong.

Vietcong preview

Here's some of the good stuff:
Everybody knows that chopper or helicopter become unofficial symbol of Vietnam War. And we could use helicopters in game for rescuing yourself, when you will be in trouble, or as a support for air attack. Some missions begin on board of these flying machines and sometimes you will use onboard machine gun. Except helicopter, we will use jeep, huge military truck and fast river boats. But there is no sign that we will drive all these vehicles. It seems that we only use them as passengers operating weapons.
[Update]: Another preview can be found over at Computer & Video Games where they take some back-handed jabs at the U.S. in the process. Release is slated for Q4 2002.

Splinter Cell teaser site opens [22:01:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
UbiSoft has opened a teaser site for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell which is slated for an XBox and PC release this November. There should be a new trailer to DL, but currently the page doesn't fully load for me.

Anyway, here's some of the hype:
Infiltrate terrorists' positions, acquire critical intelligence by any means necessary, execute with extreme prejudice, and exit without a trace!

You are Sam Fisher, a highly trained secret operative of the NSA's secret arm: Third Echelon. The world balance is in your hands, as cyber terrorism and international tensions are about to explode into WWIII.
Gotta admit, those XBox screenshots sure do look nice. Hope the PC version is just as good..

BF: 1942 preview [18:21:32 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys at GameOver have put up a preview (with a slew of screenshots) of Battlefield: 1942, the long-awaited MP-oriented WII shooter from EA & Digital Illusions. Here's a little clip:
While you can man, pilot or drive anything from a multi-person B-17 bomber to a near invincible Panzer tank, mechanized equipment is few enough that they won't overrun infantry forces. In fact, concealed infantry equipped with rockets can make short order of enemy armor in no time. Battlefield 1942 currently runs on a twenty second spawn cycle; a good choice because it keeps the action close without idling too long after death. The ticketing system, unique to Battlefield 1942, acts as a resource pool to keep spawning in check so there aren't any needless kamikaze or banzai-style charges.
The game is set for a Q3 (think late September) release. And keep an eye out for the BF:1942 MP demo which is scheduled to hit in 2 more days!

DF:BHD shots [18:01:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)

I missed the beta demo because I was away on business, so these shots will have to tie me over till the real demo hits.

Ghost Recon interview [13:16:51 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at Gamer's Hell sent word that they've posted an interview with Redstorm's Darren Chukitus, where they discuss a few things about Ghost Recon. Here's a sample:
In regards to content, were there features you wished to include but were unable to do so, and if so what were they?

I would like more interactivity between vehicles and the armed infantry. Again, time is important. Doing something merits doing something right. We looked into what type of experience we wanted to give the player given the amount of time we had, and what was appropriate with a Red Storm game. I'm happy with the result, but I will explore this area more in the future to expand the experience.
Head on over for the rest..

New World Order Multiplayer Beta 2.0 [5:07:51 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
The New World Order Multiplayer Beta 2.0 is available for download from FilePlanet. This is the FPS I told you about some months earlier that features real-time per pixel shading. This means varying degrees of shadow in all the right places. We'll have to see what it looks like on-screen. FilePlanet says that game performance can be improved by installing the DirectPlay 8.2 beta. Check out the slew of screenshots.

Cocobolo Ops, a well-known and widely-respected modding team for Rogue Spear, has released its first mod for Ghost Recon: the Israel Defense Forces Mod. With excellent Israeli uniform skins (including the unique uniform of Shayetet 13, the Israeli equivalent of the U.S. Navy SEALs) and never-before-seen-in-a-game weapons (like the formerly tested and photographed but now "never existed" AK-22 SD in select fire and the new IMI Tavor 9mm), this mod promises to revitalize your GR gaming experience.
