 Q. How many players will be able to play in one game in team deathmatch or deathmatch games?

Battlefield 1942 Q&A [14:56:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The boys over at TacSim has posted a few questions to the team working on Battlefield 1942 over at the DogFighter message boards. Here's the answer on how many missions there should be and how good the AI should be:
We have included 16 maps on which we are planning 16 multiplayer scenarios and 32 single player. Our goal is to make the bots totally autonomous without the help of scrits or waypoints. The bots will be privates while the players will be officers.
Be sure to check out the rest.

Spec Ops: Omega Squad [DC] [18:29:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Zombie's John Williamson sent word that Spec Ops: Omega Squad for the Dreamcast has gone gold, and should be on store shelves in time for Thanksgiving (mid-late November). That makes 3 titles on the shelf right now for Zombie: Spec Ops: Platinum, Spec Ops for the PSX and Covert Ops, in which they worked on some of the missions for RedStorm.

Covert Ops interview [4:30:54 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpy has posted an interview with Paul Schuytema regarding Magic Lantern's work on Covert Ops. Here's a clip on why the 'counter-terrosrist' theme is so popular these days:
GameSpy: What do you think is behind the public's fascination with terrorism and counter-terrorist tactics? Why is the subject so fascinating to us?

Paul Schuytema: We all tend to be attracted by things that frighten us, and by its very nature, terrorism is dangerous and unpredictable. On the other hand, terrorism (unless you are the freedom fighter or terrorist) is very clearly an evil, and it's easy to envision yourself as the "good guy" who is going in to right a major wrong. In that sense, it taps into two deeply seated human interests: the intrigue of fear and the desire to be a hero.
There are a few nice snaps in the article as well..

Project IGI preview [0:13:27 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameCenter has whipped up a preview of Innerloop's I'm Going In, complete with 5 screenshots. Here's a snip on the terrain:
In what could turn out to be very innovative move, IGI uses a flight sim graphics engine. In Rogue Spear, a mountaintop in the distance is actually a 2D bitmap image. But in IGI, a mountaintop in the distance actually exists in the 3D game space. That may not sound all that impressive, but imagine waging a firefight across a huge landscape instead of the cramped quarters of Rogue Spear, and all of a sudden you have an exciting new dynamic--one that promises to meld Rogue Spear and Delta Force with the wide-open spaces of Tribes.
I've been saying that since I first saw the game.

Flashpoint screens [20:18:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I don't think these are new, but GA-Source has posted 12 scrrenshots and a small blurb on the latest news on FP (which I just covered in my last post.) If anything, the shots are worth looking at again to soften the blow of the game being pushed back to Q1 2001.

[Update]: TacSim has another GA-Source link for 3 new shots and a quote from Codemasters on the game.

Flashpoint news [20:09:59 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Flashpoint fansite extrodinaire ColdWar (hosted right here at SpecForce), has posted some big news regarding Bohemia Interactive's upcoming game, Flashpoint. The game is now called Operation Flashpoint and Codemasters (you know, the guys that killed Navy SEALs..) will be the publisher. The release date has also been pushed back to 'sometime in the first part of 2001.'

COE review [3:51:22 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
MrSkETcH from TacSim let me know that GamingCove has posted a review of RedStorm's Covert Operations Essentials, the ultimate "stand alone" package for the rabid Rainbow Six fan, with more counter-terrorist material than a Navy SEAL training course. Here's a snip on the training side of the package:
From the types of weapons, details of historical operations, and even info on numerous CT groups across the globe, this trainer has it all. One of the editors called it "The Encarta Encyclopedia of Counter-Terrorism", that is probably not too far off a description of what the interactive trainer offers, information wise. This data isn't here without a purpose however. In a nutshell, the trainer is putting you, the player, in the shoes of an incoming cadet, who's just jumping at the chance to put some terrorist scum into their place, but in real life, before you can get your trigger happy hands on an MP5, you have to go through a series of tests.
A few screenshots are posted as well, of both the training part and the gameplay missions.

I.G.I screens [2:13:39 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has posted 14 screenshots of InnerLoop's/Eidos' upcoming game, Project IGI / I'm Going In for your viewing pleasure. Only 1 or 2 looks new to me, but these are the very latest shots of the game, and def worth checking out (again).

COE first look [1:48:41 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Also from TacSim, I see that PC Arena/SimArena has posted a 'first impressions' of Covert Ops along with 15 screenshots. Here's a bit on what's included in the package:
For the uninitiated, the 2 CD set contains a Training CD as well as a Mission CD. The Training CD is chocked full of information, bristling with content. Everything one would be required to know and then some is all in there. Of particular interest was the subject of "Field Encryption" and in the CD itself, was teeming with specifics that could make any OCS (Officer Candidate School) Cadet wish he had this before enlisting. Make no mistake, the people behind this product are the real McCoys! I can't stress enough on the information found in the Training CD. Right there alone is worth what you may pay at retail and what you read is far better than any fiction currently out there. Heck - it's based on Real-World sources. You'll even be required to take a Covert Ops Exam!
Looks like they liked it..

COE review [1:37:29 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I noticed via TacSim that Planet Rainbow Six has posted an in-depth review of Covert Operations Essentials from RedStorm Entertainment. Here's a snip from the conclusion:
If you played Quake all your life, and wondered what all the hype around Rogue Spear is, and you never knew anything about tactical games, and wanted a quick start in the Rogue Spear community, this is your ticket. To play Rogue Spear well you have to learn something in CT action and tactics. Myself, I picked it up through scurrying around for informations, hours browsing the web, and a LOT of books. You don't have to go through the pain, it's all in that Training CD of yours. Point is, you buy this title, you know what RS is all about, you learn about CT stuff, and the entire Rainbow Six series suddenly made a LOT of sense to you. It's more fun playing that way. Playing RS as a shooter is boring, playing it tactically, well, that's something you have to learn, and once again, all the info is in that Training CD.

Battlefield 1942 interview [18:39:56 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's that Dogfighter has put up a nice interview with Niklas Persson, Producer of Battlefield: 1942, Digital Illusion's 3D WWII game. Here's a snip on where the battles will take place:
All the five major powers are represented: USA, England, Russia, Germany and Japan. The theatres are North Africa, the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Western Europe. We've picked the scenarios which are well known to most people like Guadacanal, the Battle of Kursk, Iwo Jima, Stalingrad, Arnheim, El Alamein and many more totaling up to sixteen scenarios. All of them can be played in multiplayer and single player with the possibility of playing the Axis and then the Allied side in the single player game.
Three screenshots are included, one of which looks new to me.

MGS [PC] first impressions [20:59:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I purchased Microsoft's port of Konami's Metal Gear Solid on Saturday, and I've done up a 'first impressions' article on it.

MGS [PC] first impressions

How does it stand up? Here's a snip:
The game flow can be summed up by 'action sequence, cut-scene, action sequence, cut-scene', repeat. But, it does make the game very cinematic. There is a lot of story here, and it unfolds bit by bit in an intriguing way which keeps you interested. I don't know if I want to finish the action sequences to get to the cut-scenes or vice versa!
There are 6 pics included as well. Give it a look and let me know what ya think.

DF:LW weapons article [16:31:43 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys over at Land-Warrior.com have posted and in-depth article that takes a look at the real-world characteristics of the weapons (the pistols in this case) to be found in Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's a snip on the Mark 23 pistol:
"The Mark 23 provides this accuracy without the need for hand-fitted parts common in custom-built match pistols costing thousands of dollars more. One of the most thoroughly tested handguns in history, the MK23/Mark 23 project originated in 1991 when HK began development for the U.S. Special Operations Command, the unit that directs the activities of America’s most elite military units, including the Navy SEALs and the Army Special Forces."

DF:LW website update [11:23:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The official Delta Force: Land Warrior website has been updated with some new content. There's now an audio snippet that plays when you hit the site, and they've updated their character profiles page with bio's for 2 of the 5 members, with the rest "coming soon"..

MGS [PC] shots/news [6:05:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Got two quick MGS updates for ya:

MGS news/shots

bullet PC.IGN has posted a small blip and new shots of MGS. Here's a snip:

The wait is finally over. Now PC fans can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation title Metal Gear Solid, featuring the VR Missions, the first person mode, and the special camera extras. In fact, this is actually a port of the Japanese Integral version of the game, which has never been released in the US (the VR missions pack was very similar, but not identical).
bulletNext up is also a small update on MGS from MeccaWorld also with pics, but none new. Here's a snip from their report:

Hundreds of missions. More than 300 missions from “Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions” are included. Missions include seek and destroy, taking out enemy guards, solving murder mysteries and playing the role of the arch enemy, Ninja. Stealth and diversionary tactics. Because players stay out of sight, they must use their mental prowess to navigate through tough play situations. Enemy AI soldiers will track sound and footprints and roll grenades down crawl spaces to flush players out. Force is used as a last resort.

Thanks BluesNews.

DF:LW preview [18:43:58 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks at CheckOut.com have posted a preview of NovaLogic's thrid game in the Delta Force series, Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's a snip on the missions and characters:
In Delta Force: Land Warrior, you play the role of one of five military experts, each with his or her own specialty. You'll embark on a series of 20 missions all over the world, from Egypt to South America. And depending on which character you choose, your COA (Course of Action) will be different for each. You'll be able to choose from a demolitions/grenadier expert, a heavy gunner, an underwater demolitions expert, a sniper and a close quarters specialist. I was able to play with Cole "Gas Can" Harris, a soldier with a penchant for shrapnel. He can launch grenades with deadly accuracy, taking out targets at over 100 meters with no problem.
Also included are 9 new screenshots, all taken from the demo.

Even more EE shots [18:31:07 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
While at TacSim, I saw that PCArena also has some SWAT3: Elite Edition shots posted. Here's what they had to say:
5 new scenarios have been included with Elite Edition and the maps are certainly bigger and more complex than the previous offerings! Enemies are now more tenacious and depending on your settings, could be even far deadlier than yourself. Owners of SWAT 3 may also download the enhancements and update from Sierra when Elite Edition ships...
Release date is set for October 2nd.

Hidden & Dangerous 2 preview [15:32:17 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Today's gonna be a busy news day. I've got lots more in store to post today, so def stay tuned..

So, GameSpot UK has posted a preview of IllusionSoft's WWII tactical shooter Hidden & Dangerous 2. Here's a clip:
You'll be able to plan the actions of the team in a mission with the help of a similar system to that used in Hidden & Dangerous. However, now the tactics planning is done in the level rather than on the map.

Like Hidden & Dangerous, there's plenty of variety and various options for solving the problems you come up against. You'll get to play 23 missions in nine different campaigns, and there are also maps designed exclusively for multiplayer gaming.
Great stuff for sure. There are 6 previously-seen pics included as well.

GameSpy Tactical Olympics [15:18:11 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
In the GameSpy gaming Olympics, in the Tactical category, the Silver Medal was awarded to RedStorm's Rogue Spear: Urban Operations. Here's the rip:
Fans of Red Storm's popular Rogue Spear tactical counter-terrorist game will get a kick out of the mission pack Urban Ops. Objectives take place in populated areas around the globe under the threat of ghastly terrorist acts. It's up to you and your team of the UN's elite to save the targeted locations from a horrible fate.

Alongside four new weapons, five single-player missions, eight multiplayer maps, and five gameplay modes have been added. Terrorist tactics have been updated, demanding stronger nerves of steel than before. If you liked the parent, then you'll enjoy this add-on.
Congrats RSE and UO!

SWAT3:EE preview #2 [15:03:39 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
John Keepfer from GameSpy sent word that they've posted a hands-on preview of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, the multi-player expansion pack for the original SWAT3: CQB. Here's what you can expect to find in the package:
In addition to the multiplayer supplement, there are new characters, skins, and five new missions in the Elite Edition upgrade, including: Airport, Chang's Theater, Hollywood Hills, City of Angels Hospital, and Los Angeles Subway. And if that wasn't enough, Sierra has also included a new SWAT3 3.14 update (3.12 is the current), and some killer developer tools that allow you to "modify existing missions by creating scenarios, collections of characters and objectives;" an amazing retail package. But what makes this even more mind-blowing is that Sierra is giving this upgrade away for free for previous SWAT3 owners.
There are some nice screenshots to go along with the article as well.

Covert Ops day at Pie's [1:54:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Pie sent word that they're having 'Covert Ops Day' over at Pie's Tactics, which features tips, walkthrus, pics, first impressions, hacks, a dedicated forum and more.

'Covert Ops Day' at Pie's

Here's a snip from the first impressions part on the new missions:
The campaign missions were built by the team at RSE and basically, they are RSE's finest work. While novices to the Rogue Spear series will see little to no differences between the missions seen in COE and seen prior, veterans of Rogue Spear can tell that there's just something special about how these campaign missions were put together. Even the little things, like the plot of the mission, were superbly crafted. The first mission, Lucky Snare is based in the jungles of Bolivia, and they look superb. The level looks great because they managed to use small hills and crevices to really convey the effect of real land. In past maps, the tendency had been either towards flattened out landscapes, or gradual, simplified hills. Furthermore, they were truly able to capture perspective for the backgrounds. The river below the gorge really does look like its 100 feet down, and the hill above the waterfall looks as if it rises to the sky. The other two missions, on an arctic base and at a missile silo are also superb looking missions.
There's lots more COE info to be had, so def check it out.

[Update]: Pie wanted me to also mention his contest where they're giving away 6 copies of COE. Thanks Pie!

SWAT3: EE preview [1:22:17 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Spoons from SimHQ sent word that they've posted their very in-depth preview of Sierra's SWAT3: Elite Edition, the expansion pack for SWAT3: Close Quarters Battle.

SWAT3:EE preview

Here's a snip on some new features you'll find:
Sierra has added several new moves for your AI character, which assist greatly in gameplay. While you've always been able to lean to one side or the other in SWAT3, there is now a temporary lean command, which automatically returns you to upright when released. Similarly, there's a temporary crouch mode as well.

New weapon commands are a magnified view with some weapons (basically just a zoom-in view with a new reticule), a new half-throw and full-throw for grenades, and variable reticules for your gun (ranging from the default reticule, to a small triangle, to a mere dot).
Lots more good stuff in the preview, so check it out. There's also a few new screen shots in there as well.

DF:LW preview [16:43:02 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's News that CGO has put up a preview with some cool new screenshots of NovaLogic's upcoming game, Delta Force: Land Warrior.

DF:LW preview

Here's a healthy snip from the article:
One of the main reasons NovaLogic stuck with voxels so long for this series was their ability to offer long ranges for sniping and tactical action. Polygons, they assured us, couldn't offer such flexibility at an acceptable cost in performance. Apparently the success of games like Tribes and Motocross Madness convinced them otherwise, because Land Warrior sacrifices little (if any) of the long range combat of its predecessors, and also manages to deliver exciting terrain detail. Actually, from what is visible in the desert setting of the demo map, the terrain may even be more realistic now, as the new engine seems to smooth out the dips and hillocks a bit, looking more natural and less exaggerated than before. And you can still reach out and touch someone a long way away.
Just the way I like it, hehe..

IGI shots #3 [16:26:44 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The deluge of IGI shots continues with 7 new shots over at ProjectIGI.com.

7 new IGI shots

IGI shots #2 [1:00:18 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Daily Radar has also posted a small preview of IGI, with the same screenshots (well, 2 are different ) that PC GamePro had, but at a nice 800x600 res. Here's a snip from the preview:
The terrain looked awesome, and the AI on the enemies wasn't bad; they had good, but not perfect, vision, and their aim wasn't as good as the Rogue Spear AI, which at times was unrealistic. Some of the buildings are made of bullet-permeable material, so ducking into a shack may not be any protection from attacking guards. Finally getting to play the game really sold us on the potential of I.G.I. We can't wait to see a beta or demo.

IGI preview/pics

I like what I'm reading... And sliding down that cable is gonna rock too! It should also be noted that the game appears to be up to build 0.80, so things are progressing nicely. I also like the lighting and color palette they use. November can't get here soon enuf for me! Thanks Blue's for the news.

IGI shots #1 [0:39:03 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Picking up right where yesterday left off, PC GamePro has posted a small blurb and 9 wickedly cool screenshots (unfortunately at only 400x300 res.) from Innerloop/Eidos' Project IGI / I'm Going In.

This game's def gonna kick some serious ass when it's released in November.

DF2 MP article [20:31:57 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Hot damn, it's been a busy news day! Continuing with that fact, the guys over at ActionTrip have posted an article entitled DF2 Multiplayer: Up-close and Personal in which they take an in-depth look at the MP aspect of DF2. The article is part 2 in a series that focuses on NovaLogic's Delta Force games from a real military standpoint, written by an ex-special forces agent. Here's a snip from the article:
It was interesting how the game makes you visible (or invisible when you crouch or go prone), since that is certainly one of the crucial elements in the field. It had something to do with whether you are wearing the Ghillie Suit, too. All these parameters decide your stealth. On the other hand, if you are not visible to other players, opening fire will give you away. Such a trade-off is something often encountered in actual combat. It's the little things that make this game so appealing in multiplayer… The engine took care of some cute little details, like whether or not your enemy is visible to you (and to what extent, if he is). It considers angle and altitude, as well as "extra" camouflage he/she is wearing. It's sometimes possible that you see tracers coming out of "thin air", sort to speak.
Great read; check it out!™

Thanks VoodooExtreme for the news.

SWAT3:EE news [16:43:27 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Avault has posted an interview (and 3 pics) with Sierra's Rod Fung regarding SWAT3: Elite Edition. Here's a snip from the interview:
SWAT 3 Elite Edition is a major upgrade to the original title. How does Sierra plan to combat impressions that this is just another rebundling of old content?

The game is so much more than "just a gold version of the original." The team has added an incredible amount of content and features, to the point that S3EE is a unique experience. Fans will find that all aspects of the original game have been enhanced. In addition to the multi-person mode, new multi-person and single user missions are included: a hostage rescue mission at LA General Hospital, a scenario set on the LA commuter train, one set in Chang's Chinese Theater, and a cool mission that has the German Rap Star Tristan as one of the enemies. [more..]
Hmm, it does sound just a bit like Urban Ops tho, no? (subway mission, 'chinese' mission, mod support..) But still, a very worthwhile upgrade.

In related news, Sierra sent word that S3EE can be pre-ordered at this link, (which I posted about 2 days ago ), and that full details for downloading the free upgrade (which includes the multi-player options and editing tool kit) for existing users will be made alongside the retail release of SWAT 3: Elite Edition this fall. Indeed.

MGS [PC] GOLD [15:38:22 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Well, considering the game is supposed to ship/be in stores this Friday, it comes as no surprise that Microsoft has announced that Metal Gear Solid for the PC has gone gold. Here's the PR:
SOLID SNAKE IS SOLID GOLD! METAL GEAR SOLID PC GOES GOLD

Microsoft today announced that Metal Gear Solid PC, the PC version of Konami's number one selling console game, has gone gold. This means that the product is completed and is expected to hit store shelves in the U.S. later this month. Metal Gear Solid PC has all the intense action, cunning espionage and tactical stealth of the original, with exciting new features that improve the game play experience.

Metal Gear Solid PC builds upon the original console title with several new features, such as high-resolution graphics, a first-person play mode, and the ability to save the game at any moment. All missions from the original Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid VR Missions are included for added game play depth. Showcasing stunning graphics, an immersive, cinematic experience, intriguing story line and revolutionary gameplay, Metal Gear Solid PC delivers all the thrills of a blockbuster spy movie.

In the game, players assume the role of retired Special Forces veteran Solid Snake as they attempt to liberate a secret Alaskan weapons base from a band of ruthless terrorists. Armed with only a pair of binoculars and a bad attitude, gamers must rescue the hostages and save the world from nuclear destruction before time runs out. But danger lurks around every corner, with deadly AI enemies on the prowl. Encompassing a multitude of intense missions, Metal Gear Solid PC entwines fans in covert operations and thrilling action that guarantees a heart-pounding game play experience.
This comes at a good time as I'm at a lull in my gaming, so I can devote my full attention to playing this one. I hope it lives up to expectations..

DF3 tagline contest [19:23:20 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Morgo from DF3.net sent word that they're having a tagline contest for Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's the scoop:
In association with Novalogic, DF3.NET is offering the opportunity to fans of the Delta Force genre to name Land-Warrior's tagline. In Delta Force 2, the tagline was "If you run, you'll just die tired!". We would love to see the public come up with a just as great tagline, with the winner being rewarded with a $500 special forces watch plus a free copy of Land Warrior for their troubles.

R6 hostage rescue article [1:22:03 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw by way of SimHQ that Planet Rainbow Six has posted a pretty nice article on multiplayer hostage rescue in Rogue Spear. Here's a snip:
Tip 6: Prepare the Room with Door Breach/Flashbang

This is common tactic for CT teams. However, in Rogue Spear you have to do it a little differently. I noticed that when you throw a flashbang into a room with hostages and terrorists, the tangos will try and kill the hostages first because they took the flash as a grenade. So, if possible, try to aim the flashbang to land out of sight of the terrorists. That way they will still get distracted by noise, but won't see the flash coming, thus really giving you the 6s "window of opportunity" for you to go inside and pop them in the head. Of course, have someone that is not of the assault team to throw the flashbangs, so you can maximize the time you have for the assault. Better still, take for example the TV Station map, have someone on top in the catwalks and rain flashbangs down as the assault starts. That, by the way, is something that playing in singleplayer cannot do!
There's a lot more great stuff in there; def give it a read.

MGS [PC] interview [6:30:50 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Well, well, the more I surf, the more Metal Gear Solid news I seem to find. I guess the title is close afterall. Anyway, GameSpy has posted an interview (and pics) with Peter Connolly, Program Manager for Metal Gear Solid on the PC.

MGS [PC] interview

So how does it stack up with today's games?
GameSpy: Do you think MGS PC will hold up well against the more FPS games on the PC like Quake III and Unreal Tournament?

Peter: It's hard to compare directly with these titles. As with the titles you mention above, MGS is a classic game. It will hold this class against any other, on any platform. It is not a twitch happy blood fest and offers users more then just endless carnage with each other. The user must use stealth, cunning and at the same time, be ready and able to tear heads when required. It is this breath of gameplay that makes MGS the classic it is. The PC version allows users on a whole new platform to experience this rich gameplay with all its enhanced graphical detail that the PC can offer.

MGS [PC] review [6:03:27 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Out of the blue, comes a review on GameSpot AU (they call it a review, but they didn't give any hands-on impressions..) of Microsoft's PC-port of Konami's Metal Gear Solid along with some wicked screenshots (most of 'em new.) Here's a tasty snip:
With this in mind, playing Metal Gear Solid is truly an exercise in stealth. Your objective is to remain concealed from the enemy at all times, until it becomes absolutely necessary for you to engage the enemy to achieve your objectives. The game supports many varied modes of crawling, crouching, stiffening against walls or vertical objects and a miasma of variable viewpoints. The game does not play as a first-person shooter, rather it changes view continuously to suit a range of different situations.

MGS [PC] review

Sweet stuff indeed! Can't wait.. Hopefully the game will indeed ship on September 22nd.

Codename: Eagle review [5:46:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw on Blues that Sharky Extreme has posted a review of Refraction Games' Codename: Eagle with some pretty good-looking screens shots to go along with it.

Codename: Eagle review

Here's how they sum it up:
Codename Eagle's mission-based play and story give it some substance that a typical FPS lacks, and task you with everything from assassinations and sabotage to rescues and spy work. Still, the competition outpaces it in nearly every category, and while the vehicles are interesting, they're unlikely to convince gamers to drop their copies of Unreal Tournament or Soldier of Fortune. Codename Eagle gives players a different look and a different story, but the action is average at best.

New DF:LW FAQ [5:22:16 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Morgo from Land-Warrior.com let me know that they've posted the newest FAQ for Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's something I didn't know, but I'm glad to see:
A one-shot, one-kill game like the Delta Force series could really use an in-game save feature. Any chance of that happening in the new game?

Yes. We've gotten a lot of requests to add an in-game save feature, so Delta Force: Land Warrior will let you save your progress anywhere and at any time during a mission. Hard-core DF players may still want to play through each mission without saving, but the feature will be there for those who want to use it.
I like it. Does anyone remember NL saying DF2 would have a save-game feature tho?!

Metal Gear Solid release date [19:11:12 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
According to my local Electronics Boutique, Microsoft's Metal Gear Solid [PC], which was slated for release today, has been pushed back to September 22, which is next Friday. There's been hardly any press so far on MGS, and its also pretty unusual for a Microsoft product to miss a ship date.. I kinda don't think MS is putting their muscle into marketing this title at all. I've attempted to contact MS about the title, but got zip in return.. Ahh well.

DF:LW interview [16:24:23 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
There's an interview with NovaLogic's Wes Eckhart over at the Delta Force HQ forums. Here's a snip that caught my eye:
When the tall grass is gone, how are the snipers gonna hide? will there be trees, forests, swamps?

There will certainly be trees, plus the natural cover the rolling terrain has always provided in the Delta Force games. Our designers are compensating for the loss of tall grass by making sure the terrain itself is populated with the kinds of ridges and depressions snipers love to call home.

More importantly, while the move to a 3D-required graphics engine means losing the tall grass, it also means we can dress up the battlefields with bigger, more involved 3D objects -- buildings, towers, ruins, etc. -- and a sharp-eyed player will find we've designed some sweet sniper spots into those structures.
There's a lot more great info in there as well; check it out!

Thanks Blues.

IGI interview/pics [16:09:34 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted an interview with Innerloop, the developer of I'm Going In, the upcoming thinker-shooter due in November (right in time for Land Warrior. Do companines do this on purpose?! ) The article includes 4 new screenshots as well, showing off the outdoor scenery and weather. Here's a clip from the interview:
GameSpot UK: The screenshots show an airbase with all the weather and lighting effects gradually removed. These effects are obviously important to the game.

Innerloop: To add realism we've also added fogging, rain and snow effects. Combined with lightmaps on buildings and the landscape this gives a realistic atmosphere to the game. Lightmaps give shadows in the valleys and integrate the buildings nicely into the landscape.
More great info in there as well. Def give it a look.

Project IGI update [15:28:48 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a small update on Innerloop/Eidos' upcoming game, Project IGI / I'm Going In. Included are 7 pics and a mirror of the new trailer released a few days ago (story). Here's a snip from the article on how the game's portal engine works:
In Project IGI a lot of the action takes place inside buildings or in the case of one level, underground. The Terraform's portal system has allowed for complex indoors and outdoors environments to be created. A portal are defined as a door or a window. This means that the complex interiors are not drawn while the player is outside the house, therefore not stealing frame rate. Only the things visible through the windows and doors are drawn, the rest is occluded.
Great stuff. All reports have IGI being released this November; look for it then.

Project IGI characters [15:11:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Helza from ProjectIGI.com sent word that they've posted a very in-depth tutorial on how the characters in I'm Going In are created, written by Joachim Barrum & Mikael Noguchi from the development team, concluding with an MPEG movie showing off the finished character. Here's a bit on the texturing process:
It’s important that the texture creates an illusion that the character-model is a lot more detailed than it actually is in the mesh and that it has a proper contrast-value. Sometimes we scale up the textures and work with in a much higher resolution, just to include the most important details as good as possible. The end result is then scaled down, as the maximum resolution for in-game textures is 256*256 pixels. When scaling down the texture the rough strokes looks highly detailed and clean. It’s also necessary to have a simple light-source on the texture; because the light-source in the game-engine will take care of the rest.

Rogue Spear tweak guide [16:53:17 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Tweak3D has written a newbie tweaking guide for Rogue Spear, covering installation, configuration, general tweaks, video tweaks, audio tweaks and more. Here's a snip from the audio tweak section:
The Maximal Sound option will increase the maximum number of 3D sounds that can be played at one time. On low-end systems, this option will slow the game down a bit. If you have a very high end computer with a good sound card, performance should not be affected. Also, not all sound cards support this feature. Check your sound card manual for more information on the maximum number of sounds that can be played at a time.

H&D2 release pushed back? [16:22:49 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
EuroGamer is reporting that release dates for several Take 2 games have been pushed back. Notable to us is that the release date for Hidden & Dangerous 2 has been pushed back to Q4 2001 instead of Q1 2001. Here's the rip:
The latest UK release schedule has just arrived from Take 2 Europe, with several notable changes since last month. Several key titles have slipped, with the third of the "Blair Witch" games now delayed from the end of November to early next year, and "Oni" following suit - hardly surprising given the state the game was apparently in when we saw it at ECTS recently. Caribbean dictator sim "Tropico" has been pushed back from first quarter to second quarter 2001, and "Max Payne" has been delayed yet again, this time slipping from second quarter to third quarter 2001.

Worst of all are "Hidden & Dangerous 2" and "Mafia : City Of Lost Heaven" from Illusion Softworks - both games are now due at the end of 2001 rather than the beginning of the new year. Meanwhile the PC version of the bizarre action game "MoHo" has been pushed back a month to November 24th, although flight sim "Jetfighter 4" has been brought forward a month to October 27th - now there's something you don't see very often...
Grrrrrr!

Covert Ops at ECTS [16:21:13 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The guys over at Battle-Fields have posted an article on RSE's Covert Operations Essentials, chock full of great info and new screenshots (taken off the monitor, and some press kit shots.) Here's a snip about the game's jungle level and outdoor rendering:
I actually managed to have a play around on the jungle map and I was pretty good, certainly different to any other location I had previous played in Rogue Spear. The general landscape was heavily "polygoned" (if such a word exists!) and you were forced down certain paths by large tree trunks. What must be bushes covered the ground, although they do look like tow pieces of card slotted into each other. If this sounds negative then you are right, however bear in mind that the Rogue Spear engine was not made for extensive outdoor maps, you should see the new Delta Force: Land Warrior screenshots for an engine which does outdoor terrain superbly.

Dleta Force 3 interview [2:18:23 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
DailyRadar has posted a nice interview with NovaLogic's Wes Eckhart regarding Delta Force: Land Warrior. Here's a healthy chunk on the new 3D engine:
DR: Why did you decide to create a new engine for the game? Is this Delta Force totally redesigned?

WE: The primary reason was that we wanted to be able to create bigger, more impressive buildings and interior environments than the voxel-based Delta Force and Delta Force 2 graphic engines could handle, but we didn't want to ditch the long-range outdoor engagements that have become a hallmark of the series. That meant using a new, 3D-only engine.

Land Warrior is a new game in the sense that it's built on a redesigned engine that gives us some new capabilities in terms of mission design, but fans of the series can rest assured we're not turning it into another Quake clone. The emphasis will still be on realistic combat in realistic, rolling terrain, but now we also have the option of taking things indoors for some close-quarters combat.

DF:LW interview

Seems like NL has a good handle on what makes the DF series unique, and DF3 should follow suit.. There's one new screenshot to be had as well.

Thanks Blues News.

Ga-Source has posted 4 new shots from Battlefield 1942 from Refraction Games (who did Codename: Eagle.)

Battlefield 1942 shots

Battlefield 1942 recreates the most famous battles of WWII in full 3D, and allows players to experience events like D-day, Iwo Jima, and El Alemien from a first person perspective.
The renders look pretty sweet for sure.

DF:LW 'interview' [19:08:07 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
FGN Online has posted a small update on NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior where they talk with the game's producer, Wes Eckhart, about the game's weapons. Here's a snip:
According to Eckhart, "The first thing players will notice is the new primary weapon, the Objective Individual Combat Weapon, or OICW. It's a new weapons system that integrates a 5.56mm rifle with a 20mm grenade launcher, a laser range finder, and a video scope with thermal optics for night vision.
Once again showing how far ahead of it's time it really was, Spec Ops 2 already had an OICW to use..

Thanks EvilAvatar for the news.

H&D 2 Interview [7:18:35 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
The Adrenaline Vault posted a interview with one of the developers (no name was given) from Illusion talking about some on the new features in H&D 2. There is lots of new info, including the new multiplayer game types (classic deathmatch, King of the Hill, Escort, CTF and others) and some of the new locations (English landscapes, a mountainous and wooded Sumava, snowed-in Norwegian islands, an African desert and tropical forests of Burma)
What enhancements will be made available for controlling soldiers from a distance? Will you be able to give orders to remote soldiers via a portable radio?

The gamer is going to have a tactical map at hand. It will enable him or her to send soldiers to more distant places using the same commands as the 3D mode. Furthermore, both views can be on at the same time. I see this as a great advantage in comparison to H&D. People will understand what the situation on the battle battlefield is and, at the same time, be able to control a selected soldier in a 3D view.
Be sure to check out the rest of the interview. 5 screenshots are included, but at the time of this posting they were not working. From what I could tell they are all older shots.

SWAT3: EE preview [19:16:48 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
10-David.Com has posted a preview of Sierra's upcoming SWAT3 expansion pack, Elite Edition. They cover all sorts of great info such as the release dates, how/where to get it (the free version if you already own SWAT3), level editing (since it comes with a scenario editor), multiplayer, and more! Here's a snip on the level editor:
SWAT 3 uses Worldcraft 3.3. If you happen to already have it, then your ‘good to go’. We will also have a Scenario editor which will allow you to set up your own scenarios, characters, objectives, etc.. We are giving the player everything they need to create their own missions.

More H&D 2 Features [20:35:31 EDT] by ~~ AndOne   Comments (0)
PC gamer UK posted a small preview of H&D 2 from ECTS. So small I can post it all here.
Hidden & Dangerous 2 has focused on a stronger sense of immersion by giving the player a central character who must be kept alive throughout the game.

Although his fellow soldiers will again be controllable and expendable, there will be RPG experience elements and veterancy will be important as missions get tougher.

Tactical maps will be far easier to use and less essential to play than previously, in a sequel that will be even more action oriented.

More vehicles will be drivable, including a mini-sub and a variety of aircraft. Tutorials will ease players into the quick-to-master control systems for these.
They also mention next months PC Gamer UK will feature a interview and new screenshots. Did I read this right, did he say Aircraft ?

Shrapnel interview [17:10:56 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Ga-Source has interviewed Zombie's John Williamson regarding their upcoming title, Shrapnel: Urban Warfare 2025. Here's a sample Q&A:
How different will Shrapnel: Urban Warfare 2025 be from the previous incarnations of SpecOps games?

It is set in the future and will be faster paced. There will also be vehicles that you can ride in.
Other interesting tidbits are of course that Spec Ops 3: Navy SEALs is still being worked on, and will incorporate everything they've learned in the Spec Ops series so far (and with the LithTech engine, I presume), plus news of other projects Zombie is working on..

H&D [DC] review [16:42:16 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot UK has posted a review of the Dreamcast version of Illusion Softworks' Hidden & Dangerous, where it garners a solid score of 8 out of 10. Here's a snip for ya:
Once in the mission and with controls mastered, right from the start it's clear that H&D's strength comes from its ability to create tension and atmosphere. The first mission opens our adventure on a wet and blustery night. Low visibility, a number of guards and a train will stand in your way as you try to rendezvous with some Italian resistance operatives.
Their only criticisms were the difficult control scheme due to the lack of buttons on the DC controllers, and the game's overall difficulty level. There's also a screenshot gallery to check out as well.

Spec Ops Op Bravo review [15:42:07 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
CombatSim has reviewed Zombie's Spec Ops: Operation Bravo, the free expansion pack to Spec Ops 2: Green Berets and included some nice pics to go along with it. Here's a snip from the intro:
Zombie and Ripcord have teamed up once again to produce Spec Ops 2: Operation Bravo, which is essentially the free expansion mission pack for SO2. Like the original formula they employed with Spec Ops: Ranger Team Bravo back in October of 1998, the design team has gone to the customers, listened to their complaints, and produced a sophisticated patch as well as offering twenty-five brand new missions and some new multiplayer game play modes. Furthermore, while the retail box (known as Platinum) will be available with all these enhancements, the patch can be downloaded for free.
While I don't agree with everything in the review, the reviewer does know the Spec Ops line very well and made many valid points. Def give it a read.

3DActionPlanet has posted a small blurb (half-way down the page) on Innerloop's upcoming thinker-shooter, I'm Going In, to be published by Eidos. Here's a snip on the weapons:
However, you're not the buffed out guy you'd expect yourself to be. You can't carry a dozen weapons at once, which means you have strategic choices to make throughout the game. You start with only a few tools, and must kill enemies to procure more. Most of the weapons are based upon the weaponry of the Warsaw Pact, such as the Kalashnikov AK-47, Spas 12, T80 .556, H&K MP5SD, Glock 17, and a load of others. You'll also be given access to high-powered arms like the LAW 18, proximity mines, and fragmentation grenades.
Sounds good to me..

Delta Force & the military [19:15:27 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ActionTrip has posted an article that takes a look at NovaLogic's Delta Force series of games from a military point of view, written by an ex-special forces agent. Here's a snip:
Any game that is to be used as training "tool" for U.S. Army Land Warrior training program, and among the top ten bestsellers on every chart, should be automatically considered "as realistic as they get". Well, the game is excellent, probably the best in its genre, but as far as the realism goes, the Army is using a customized version of the Nova Logic's Delta Force 2, one that has those little untrue (read: unrealistic) aspects of the game made over. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing DF 2, well, the first two hours or so, but then it got kinda, well, predictable. Again, compared to other combat sims, and some of them tend to over-elaborate the tactical aspect making the game too complicated, and hence boring. DF 2 has this fine ratio of tactics and gung-ho, but it is still predictable. It didn't matter whether I tried to infiltrate quietly the enemy compound, or went in Rambo style; the outcome was usually the same. Shoot enough bad guys, and you'll probably complete the mission. Sure, there were subtle differences --- if the guards just around the corner heard you shoot, they would displace the "entire" 50 meters, but of course, they where still sitting ducks.
I think he was a bit harsh overall, but a pretty interesting read for sure.. Thanks VE.

Move over H&D, you now have competition. Refraction (makers of CodeName: Eagle) are working on their next game. Battlefield 1942 will be a 1st person perspective WWII game. Locations include North African, Pacific, and Europe. The game is due out next year (2001).

Take to the skies in a Spitfire or Messerschmitt, or roam the high seas in a massive battleship. Make your bombing runs over enemy territory or hunt down tanks with your rocket launcher. Just remember to look out for enemy snipers and shock troops.

As a strong multiplayer game, Battlefield 1942 pits players against player as two teams struggle for tactical supremacy. The game will offer unrestricted use of fighters planes and bombers, armoured vehicles and ever warships in a first person perspective that will use every aspect of the battles of World War II.
GA-Source has a early screenshot from the game and it looks very interesting in deed.

More LW news from ECTS [8:47:08 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameSpot has posted a small preview of DF:LW as seen at ECTS with all kinds of great info stuffed into such a small preview. Here's a snip on the game's new sniping effect:
The ECTS build of Land Warrior also added a realistic, new sniping effect. While standing, your view through the scope is unsteady, which makes it difficult to aim at longer distances. However, while crouched and prone, this effect starts to wear off, which makes sniping easier.
The No One Lives Forever demo recently released has the same effect, and its def pretty cool, tho, might be kinda annoying after awhile.. We'll have to see how it impacts gameplay..

DF:LW FAQ updated [8:34:09 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Morgo from Land-Warrior.com sent word that they've updated the Delta Force: Land Warrior FAQ (frequently asked questions file) with new info. Here's a sample:
What's up with the grenade launchers? They're too accurate in the demo!

We've noticed a lot of people commenting on this, but the accuracy of the MM-1 40mm grenade launcher and the OICW's 20mm high-explosive rounds is a function of the character you're playing in the demo. He's the squad's Demolitions/Grenadier expert, and one of his special abilities is near-pinpoint accuracy with grenades. He can put a grenade on target just by centering the bad guy in his crosshairs; other characters will have to estimate the range and lob grenades as in the previous Delta Force games. It's also worth noting that the ranges of the 40mm and 20mm grenades are a exaggerated in the demo; they'll be reined in for the finished game.
More great stuff in there, including news that they're probably gonna re-do the character graphics/skin cuz people were mentioning it looked too cartoony.

DF:LW preview [8:18:15 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Media & Games Online (MGON) has posted a preview (with some pics, tho none new..) of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Land Warrior after having seen it at this years ECTS in London. Here's a snip on the expansive play area:
Novalogic have finally taken note of the criticisms levelled at the game and included a hybrid of the Voxel Engine and current 3D accelerated technologies. The end result is a graphics engine that allows for large open areas as well as much more attractive indoor arenas that are quite simply very impressive. When the game was demonstrated to us we where able to view a mission set in Egypt with the pyramids as well as an Oil Rig style mission. A true indication of how good the engine is, was when climbing to the top of one of the pyramids. We where quite amazed by the distance that could be seen and the true size of the mission area.
Not much new info, but a good read still..

Covert Ops interview [1:51:25 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
GameZone has posted a pretty in-depth interview with RSE's Kevin Perry, where they talk Covert Ops of course. Here's a sample Q&A:
Question: Is Covert Ops more about what the title suggests, or is there real gaming value here? What can people expect to find in the program? How will gamers be tested? What will they take away from this program?

Perry: “The two CDs enclosed in Covert Ops integrate into the Rainbow Six series in two separate ways.

"The first is as a simple mission pack. Covert Ops has nine new missions for veterans and novices alike, ranging from simple covert operations training missions (busting a meth lab in a trailer park) to no-holds-barred RAINBOW action (tracking a downed airplane through mountainous jungle terrain under enemy fire). This is a stand-alone CD – again, I want to reiterate that the player need not have purchased Rogue Spear or Rainbow Six to play the missions.

“The second CD, however, is new to Rainbow Six and unique to the genre. The player, in the guise of a new member of Team RAINBOW, undergoes document and tactical training derived from the most accurate of real-world sources. The player will use actual military documents, executive-level briefings, and dozens of interviews with experts in the field to progress through a series of tests; success in an area earns a ribbon of achievement for the character. More great stuff in there, so be sure to give it a look..

LW news from ECTS [1:07:38 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Land-Warrior.com has the goods on DF:LW as seen at London's ECTS, and even a bit of WWII Online. Here's a snip of the LW oil rig mission they got to look at:
As for the oil rig mission, there is not much to say except that its more of the same good stuff. You start off by parachuting onto the oil rig, similar to several missions in DF2, and run around blasting the enemy into kingdom come. As you most likely have experienced the demo, there is little point in commmenting on the speed of the software. Novalogic was using a PIII 800, 128Mb RAM and GE-Force2 to show the game off and unexpectedly the game ran incredibly smoothly.
They've also got up a shot of some box artwork as well. Go check it out..

DF:LW demo update [1:27:03 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
NovaLogic has released an update for the Delta Force: Land Warrior demo that was released about a week ago, bringing it up to version 0.99.43. It adds a 'tips' page before the mission starts, 5x zoom for the OICW (instead of 4x), and cleans up the text a bit (which is still a bit fuzzy to me..)

Use the demo's "update" feature to grab it. Its about 1.4 MB.
