GameSpy Raven Shield Preview [17:20:27 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
Usually a good read, a recent GameSpy preview of UbiSoft's Raven Shield doesn't reveal much in the way of secrets.

GR Castle for Urban Ops [18:47:40 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
In a rare case of user-made backwards-compatibility, Ghost Recon's Castle map has been ported over ("under"?) to Urban Ops by the awesome duwds at @war. You'll age another 5 megs.

Raven Shield demo Release Date Update [18:42:53 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
"...just around the corner". UbiSoft is going to run two official tournaments when it is released, also.

Black Hawk Down mod for Rogue Spear [18:30:23 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
The Black Hawk Down mod for Rogue Spear is finally finished. It'll cost you about 27 megs of life in downloading time.

"The Veterans" of OFP Group Interview [21:08:19 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
@war was kind enough to host a group interview of "The Veterans", the first 30 or so die-hard English-speaking OFP fans. (Unfortunately, I was not able to reach AndOne of the now-deceased ColdWarFlashpoint for participation in the interview. He would have had some interesting things to say, I'm sure.)

BF: 1942 review [9:01:58 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Another Battlefiled: 1942 review has been posted by UGO, where they give it an A- overall. The reviewer really liked the game.. Here, take a whiff:
The overall presentation for Battlefield also helps to add to the war-torn atmosphere. Graphics are just about Medal of Honor-quality, which is extremely impressive considering there can be up to 64 players in one game, where MoH only allowed 32. Every vehicle is expertly constructed, with a true attention to detail. True war buffs will be impressed with the wing alignment of the Corsair and the low riding nature of the Panzer IV. The physics of each vehicle feels impressively realistic as well, so while you won't be able to pull off triple flips in your APC, you'll still be able to feel like you're in control of a massively destructive ton of metal. Environments also get a special touch, with the cramped ruins of Stalingrad or the sandy expanses of North Africa being recreated in fully three-dimensional glory.

OFP: Resistance review [19:58:00 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
ActionTrip has posted a review of Bohemia Interactive and Codemaster's expansion pack to Operation Flashpoint, Resistance, and awarded it a score of 77 overall. Here's the required clip:
The big deal with this game is its focus on guerilla warfare, and how to properly manage it. [...] With Resistance, you have no such cushion. Since your team is extremely limited and ammo is scarce (at best), you are required to lose as few men as possible - and to make every single bullet count. Of course, in war there are always casualties, but you have to plan for contingencies while knowing there will be few reinforcements - if there are any at all.

BF: 1942 reviews [19:49:12 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
A few reviews of DICE's & EA's currently-hot Battlefield: 1942 have popped up around the net:
bulletGameSpot (8.8 / 10)
bulletOtaku Game (3 / 5)
I like the game, but seriously, what's up with the stuttering movement? For as sparsely populated as the levels are, this thing has no excuse to be this jerky... And this was just while playing the SP campaign.. And my system's no slouch either: P4-2 GHz, 512 MB RAM, GF3 64 MB..

Conflict Desert Storm review [18:33:35 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Blue's News pointed me to a review of SCi & Pivotal Games' squad shooter, Conflict: Desert Storm and awarded it an 8 out of 10.

CDS review

Here's a snip:
Sent behind enemy lines, or scouting in front of a column of allied armoured vehicles, you and your boys are generally placed into the mouth of hell with only a selection of weaponry and explosives to help you. Each of your group has their own special skills; and although another one of your boys could pick up the sniper rifle, Foley is the undoubted king of the head shot. Jones is your demolition expert and Bradley your fearless leader; joined by Connor. Although this is the line-up you start with, our heroes are not immortal. Each has a health bar, and if that reaches zero, then `man down`. The health bar becomes a flashing red line, which quickly counts down to zero. You need to get to them with medical aid (presuming you have any medi-kits left) before it`s gone; otherwise you`ve lost them for the rest of the mission and the rest of the game.
The review touches on all 3 platforms that the game is available on, PC, PS2, and X-Box.

I dunno tho, I tried the demo and thought the controls were severly lacking on the PC. Aiming the crosshairs was very difficult.. The article mentions the controls seem to favor a gamepad, but a mouse is a much more precise controller for aiming, and the game just didn't seem to track the mouse properly, even with the mouse sensitivity cranked to max. I soooo wanted to like this game, but really couldn't get over the poor aiming..

S.T.A.L.K..E.R interview [4:40:55 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
HomeLan Fed has posted a S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Oblivion Lost interview with GSC Game World's Olev Javorsky. The interview includes 6 new screenshots as well.

STALKER interview

Here's a snip on the levels & environments you'll see in the game:
HomeLAN - What are the levels and environments like in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

Oleg V. Javorsky - The game provides spacious levels sized 1x1 kilometer in average. The 15 game levels planned will combine both indoor and huge outdoor areas into the 20 square kilometers of the Zone. The territory of the Zone is made of boisterous greenery, woods, marshes, neglected roads, vehicles, villages, factories to make it a very murky and atmospheric place to be. We took two trips to the very Chernobyl zone, and about 60% of game architecture will be a real reconstruction. Special sites like Dead Forest, cities of Pripyat’ and Chernobyl, as well as the notorious atomic plant power will be featured.
Seriously sweet screenshots they are. Def check those out. I'd love to see this game in motion.

A Breath(e) of Fresh Air [4:06:00 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
The long-awaited public release of the Operation Flashpoint-modelling program Oxygen (a version, any version!) has arrived with the advent of Oxygen Light, otherwise known as Breathe. You can find it at the official "Breathe" site. Make sure you follow the "instructions" link, because I didn't, and now I'm having some problems with it.

RavenShield Video [4:00:11 EDT] by ~~ Uziyahu   Comments (0)
There's an excellent Raven Shield video available at FilePlanet. It weighs in at about 14 megs and really shows off some of the animations and a bit of levels I haven't seen, before. The resolution is really good, but the narration isn't in English.

GR: Island Thunder preview [2:18:50 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
The folks over at pc.ign have posted a preview of Island Thunder, the 2nd ex-pack for Redstorm and UbiSoft's hit title, Ghost Recon. The game is based in Cuba in the near future. Here's some of the goods:
As in the past, the experience isn't just limited to single player. You'll have plenty of multiplayer fun to keep you going as well. With all of the mission maps and more specifically designed multiplayer maps, there should be plenty of fun to be had. Especially with the new multiplayer mission types. Three new types have been added at this point to give some renewed interest. We spent some time the new defend mode today where you and your friends can team up in defense of an area of the map. You'll see wave after wave of enemy units attacking your area. If you ever leave the area and the enemy manages to hold the area when you aren't there, you'll lose the mission.
Sounds quite fun indeed.. There are also some new shots and movies to check out as well.

DF: BHD demo date [21:51:36 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I saw via Blue's News that NovaLogic has announced that the MP demo test of Delta Force: Black Hawk Down is now (re)scheduled for Thursday, September 12th at 3pm EDT, nicely coinciding with the retail release of Battlefield: 1942. Stay tuned for the links...

SWAT: Urban Justice delayed [19:16:51 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
HomeLan Fed, by way of SWAT fansite 10-David, has reported that Sierra's fourth installment of the SWAT series, Urban Justice has been delayed until sometime in early 2003. Along with that, it seems that producer Rod Fung is leaving Sierra for another company, which is probably the cause of the delay.

In any case, that's now two tactical shooters that's been delayed till 2003, Raven Shield being the other one. Again, this is good news, as there were just too many tac shooters being released in such a short time. As it is, there are four slated for September alone: BattleField: 1942, Conflict: Desert Storm, IGI 2, and the U.S. release of Team Factor, all vying for your time and money. Urban Justice would have been #5 for September.

And don't forget, coming up in October we'll have Deadly Dozen 2: Pacific Theater (my personal favorite), and Ghost Recon: Island Thunder.

And soon after that, we'll, get the sci-fi shooter Chrome along with DF: Black Hawk Down and Splinter Cell!

Too many games, too little time!

BF: 1942 release date [5:48:04 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
I dunno if I missed this or what, but it seems that the offical Battlefield: 1942 website has been updated with a little press release stating that the game will be on store shelves on September 14th!

Here's the goods:
You've played the single and multiplayer demos and can't get enough. Now you'll be able to experience all the fury of World War II battle as Battlefield 1942 for PC-CD arrives at retailers nationwide on Saturday, September 14, 2002.

The complete game will feature 35 machines of war in 16 detailed maps from WWII's well-known battles: Kursk, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Midway and more. Each of the maps will highlight a full range of war machines from heavy armored vehicles to high-flying bombing runs to deep-sea submarines.

So suit up and get ready for action, Battlefield 1942 arrives on U.S. shores next weekend... will you be ready for battle?
I expect good things from this title.

DF: Black Hawk Down diary [13:31:31 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Always a good read, GameSpy has posted a developer diary from 2 members of the dev team of NovaLogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. The article discusses how the art & sound design is shaping up.

BHD dev diary

Here's a bit about the games new occlusion technology:
From an artist's standpoint, this technology FINALLY gives us the ability to put more detail into our decorations -- more detail into the objects that add flavor to the game. So say goodbye to the days of going into a building that is sparsely decorated with a table and a couple of crates. We can now decorate to our heart's content.
Thanks Blue's News.

AA feature [6:56:44 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
More from Khabal Gaming in the form of a feature on America's Army, whre they take a look at the recently released Sniper School addition to AA. Here's a bit from that:
The addition of sniper rifles in some levels adds a new depth to them. For example, one of my favorite levels, Insurgent Camp, is an almost completely new level because of snipers. No longer can the assault team stand in the open by their starting point. And now the defense team is really forced to stay indoors, at least until the enemy sniper is shot.
The article goes on to also list some of the new features to the game such as the new in-game browser, weapons tweaks, and penalties for friendly fire.

OFP: Resistance review [6:48:40 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
Keeping the review news flowing with word that Khabal Gaming has posted a review of the latest ex-pack for OFP, Resistance, where it scores a 7.5 out of 10. Here's a clip:
The missions are well scripted and it is evident that some thought has been put into them. Twists in mission plans, surprises, and some good old time firefights are all present. The difficulty has also been elevated to a more realistic level, this time round, you are fighting an entire army with your small group of soldiers. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself restarting the mission again and again. I know I did.
All good stuff..

Splinter Cell preview [7:21:25 EDT] by ~~ Rushian   Comments (0)
EuroGamer has posted a preview of UbiSoft's upcoming stealth game, Splinter Cell, based on a look at it at this years ECTS.

Splinter Cell preview

Here's a snip:
Whatever he's doing though, Sam conducts all of his operations in a slickly animated manner, stalking about rooms and corridors in the shadows with complete silence. The brilliant motion effects don't stop at Sam, either - they extend from the game's other characters right down to pieces of paper caught in the breeze and birds flapping about in a tree outside the window, moonlight casting their shadows onto the floor.
The preview is based on the XBox version, but I'm sure the PC version will be very similar.
