Ghost Recon 2 preview
[11:14:13 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
Missed this yesterday, but the guys at WorthPlaying have posted a preview of the X-Box version of UbiSoft & Redstorm's Ghost Recon 2, and included tons of screenshots to go along with the article. There will of course be a PC version as well. Here's a snip to start you off: The second major change to gameplay is the controversial shift to more general commands for the rest of the team from you, the leader. Now, the main commands are now fairly basic and general, with the AI of allied NPCs improved to take care of themselves a bit more. While the team does a better job of taking care of themselves, you are only allowed to play as one team member throughout the mission, and more precisely controlled tactical approaches are a bit tricky. So, love it or hate it, the commands are simpler, making for a faster-paced game.Related News

CoD: United Offensive review
[14:38:25 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at EuroGamer sent word that they've posted a review of Gray Matter and Activision's WWII shooter, Call of Duty: United Offensive, and scored it at 8 out of 10. Here's a bit to get ya going: There is at least the sense of fighting alongside others. Hearing some of my friends' old war stories - particularly those who served under the Allied Assault - you'd think the whole war was fought by one man, but I'm under no illusions just how important my squad-mates, and the whole damn army in fact, have been to our success to date. As we raced across snowy fields to recapture Foy from the Germans, looking right and seeing an endless stream of soldiers charging to the strains of an officer's whistle, even as shells blew frozen haystacks apart and the Germans threw everything they had at us, alleviated any sense of loneliness I might have been fostering inside.Related News |

Another FSW review
[16:01:35 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
PC.IGN has put up their own review of Pandemic's Full Spectrum Warrior, and apparently they liked it too: Full Spectrum Warrior is good for a number of reasons, the biggest of which are polish and presentation. From a superficial perspective, a view that I'm intimately familiar with, FSW has a nice face and lovely body. It isn't going to stand toe to toe with any of the giants like DOOM 3 or the upcoming Half-Life 2, but it's impossible to say this game looks bad. You can kinda tell that the game was built with the Xbox in mind, but it transfers well, thanks in part to the lighting bloom effect that's become so popular as of late. It definitely adds a quality to the light that makes the area look a tiny bit more realistic.Related News |

Full Spectrum Warrior [PC] review
[19:09:09 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at GameSpy have put up a review of Pandemic Studio's recently released squad simulation, Full Spectrum Warrior, and they thought it was quite good. Here's a clip: In the most essential sense, this boils down to keeping your men behind cover at all times. Conveniently, the razed cityscape of Zekistan is littered with all kinds of objects that can be used in this manner, ranging from derelict cars and dumpsters, to rickety shacks and empty wooden crates. The latter gradually degrade over time, so it ain't too smart to rely on them for extended periods of heavy fire. In any case, you'll quickly train yourself to keep your teams behind cover at all times, in many cases plotting out several moves in advance. Since you always have a clear waypoint marking the direction of your next objective, discerning a sequence of cover spots leading to it is never a problem.Ha, they actually bemoan the lack of a competitive MP mode! Give me a break -- with so many games dropping co-op, it's def worth taking a look at FSW for the fact that it has co-op! Related News

H&D2: Sabre Squadron review
[14:40:51 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The boys at EuroGamer seem to be first out of the gate with a review of H&D2: Sabre Squadron, the expansion pack to Illusion Softworks' WWII shooter, H&D2, and scored it with 7 out of 10. Here's a snip: Set across nine missions in France, Africa and Sicily, Sabre Squadron is another against the odds squad-based sneaker where silent manoeuvres are encouraged over run and gun - although how you approach each mission very much depends on how you like to play. In terms of changes, there are very little to report on; it's still very much a case of picking off enemies one by one, being careful to watch your cover, and making sure your squad-mates aren't doing anything really stupid.Related News |

Shellshock: Nam'67 review
[12:21:28 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
The guys at GameSpot have posted a review of Guerilla & Eidos' gritty Vietnam shooter, Shellshock: Nam'67, scoring it at a 'mediocre' 5.4 overall. Clippage: For the majority of the game's missions, you're accompanied by a squad of indestructible computer-controlled grunts (though they'll sometimes die--usually horribly--as part of a cutscene). The presence of teammates makes many of the firefights feel like an actual battle between two groups of soldiers. But your squad also provides constant cover, making it easy to fall back and heal, which often robs the game of much challenge.

Full Spectrum Warrior preview
[7:59:45 EDT] by
~~
Rushian
GameSpy has posted a nice little preview of Pandemic's squad-based military strat game, Full Spectrum Warrior. Here's how the game plays out: Although Full Spectrum Warrior originally began its life as a training tool for the U.S. Army, Pandemic turned it into a game that looks like a squad-based shooter, but plays like a strategy game. Played from a third-person perspective, the game focuses on urban combat, and instead of letting you run around shooting everything in sight, you control small fireteams and lead them around, providing cover for each other and engaging the enemy where appropriate. It's worth mentioning that you never even fire a weapon: you simply lead your squad to the enemy and give them a firing vector, and they take care of the rest.A demo is expected real soon now.. (today actually..) Related News

STOP THE PRESSES! KUMA\WAR GOES RETAIL! The guys at HomeLAN Fed have posted word that there will be a retail release of Kuma\War: The War on Terror come October (soon!). It will include 15 missions, one exclusively for the retail version, and a free one-month subscription to the online service. I have to admit I liked KumaWar a lot (being based on nFusion's nWorld engine), but didn't like the fact that it was only playable online for a monthly fee. I'm just not much of a MP'er, so now I can finally play the game offline at my leisure. Can't wait! Related News

*Conflict: Vietnam demo
[13:29:45 EDT] by

Rushian
Continuing to gank news from Shacknews, I see the demo of Pivital Games' Conflict: Vietnam has been released. It weighs in at 247 MB and contains the "Rumble in the Jungle" level. I've softened my stance a bit on the Conflict series, after finally getting used to their console-inspired control scheme (and each game in the series really did get better than the previous one), so I'm anxious to try this out. [Update]: Mirrors at 3D Gamers, Gamer's Hell and Worthplaying Related News
